The St. Louis Cardinals announced this afternoon that they have completed a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks, acquiring six-time National League All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt in exchange for catcher Carson Kelly, right-handed pitcher Luke Weaver, minor league infielder Andy Young and the Cardinals Compensation Round B selection in the 2019 Major League Baseball amateur draft.
Not unhappy but not satisfied.If Goldy turns out just a rental ? But since its done I hope the FO figures out a way to keep Carpenter from being the starting 3B.Okay FO continue the job.
I liked Luke, but there is a ton of competition in the staff and he was wasn’t gonna be in the rotation this season so this will be good for him. Kelly wasn’t gonna play for two more seasons most likely and they used the chip to get an All-star. The other things are hopes and prayers. I can deal with this. Now the next moves.
I am not unhappy about what we gave up I just didn’t want Goldy at all. But I am hoping to be so wrong.
Everyone here was saying luke weaver was worthless towards the end of the season, it was obvious carson kelly was never going to play for the cardinals since yadi doesnt take time off and knizner is hot on kelly’s heels anyway. I’m ok with this deal, we get the bat we need and hopefully we can sign him long term.
Goldschmidt is set to earn 14.5 million this season. Where does that put the Cardinals payroll wise. Would love to prune some salary to add a couple of more big pieces.
Everyone was saying Weaver was worthless because, well, he was worthless. Threw batting practice to the opponents. Thank you front office for unloading Weaver. Great pickup by the Cardinals. Now sign him to a three year extension.
Ari did alright too. For me, Weaver is a Joe Kelly type and Carson is a Tony Cruz type. Not bad for one season of control.

I am more worried about giving up Andy Young than Weaver or Kelly, though I thought Kelly had better use as part of a package for a different upgrade (Kluber or right fielder).
Three disposable pieces for an MVP caliber player? This seems like a great trade. The Cards clearly like Knizner better, or at least like the time he bides. Weaver had potential but is about the #9 starter, and Young could be anything at this point. The pick will be worth it if he walks or stays.
Big win, IMO.
