We are barely into March and MM3 is already riding the broadcasters. Who talks more, the Cardinal broadcast team or MM3’s comments about them?

It’s okay though MM3 – you are free to get things off your chest here. We love your fandom of the Birds-On-The-Bat. Let’s hope those guys behind the mike have a lot to cheer about in 2020.

“B-Ref developed a spring training stat that measures the quality of opponent based on the level played the previous year, where 1 is rookie ball and 10 is MLB.”

“Through play yesterday, Dylan Carlson’s quality of opponent was 6.8 or below AA (7).”

    ———————————–

Thanks for alerting us to that function at B-Ref, Brian. Pretty darn cool. Let’s see how some others stacked up, before play today.

Carlson 1.193 OPS, versus 6.8 quality
    Fowler .192 OPS, versus 8.4
    O’Neill 1.240, versus 7.1
Ozuna .091, versus 7.9 (Yeah, that’s a zero not an eight at the start of his OPS. He’s hitless.)

So basically Carlson & O’Neill have dominated Double-A level twirlers while Fowler & Ozuna have been humiliated by Triple-A quality pitching. In sample sizes smaller than a Coronavirus, of course.

Also, Carlson/O’Neill had 9 walks against 8 strikeouts. (THIS is what I like best, for sure.)
Fowler/Ozuna had walked twice and fanned 11 times, through Monday.

Then today Fowler and Ozuna each went hitless, with two Ozuna whiffs. Carlson was 1-3 with no walks or K’s.

At any rate, veterans like Fowler and Ozuna won’t (and shouldn’t) be judged until their final 25 or 30 trips to the plate in Spring Training. But it sure is nice to see the young outfielders doing exactly what we want them to do at the plate.

Well gee willikers I didn’t mean to knock the broadcasters fan club. Don’t worry, Timmy will be along soon to entertain those who watch just to live through ‘back-in-the-day’ stories. I don’t recall any other set of broadcasters who go on and on about things that are not happening on the field. Not to worry, I’ll just make liberal use of the mute button and have not reason to whine…..LOL BTW Jimmy Baseball started out as a great announcer. Still not too bad but McLaughlin has got him playing his stupid games now. JMHO and I will now cease and desist.

I have to agree with minuteman3. they get off track some. I do like Edmonds though and I really liked Al myself.

It’s not that anyone here is a member of their fan club (although I’d bet that at least one or three are members of TCN), just that it’s like clockwork that you will gripe about them. It’s fine to not like their style, but they’re far from the worst in sports and hardly worth all the angst.

Well Awful Announcing would probably beg to differ on this matter.

LOL BHC. And I totally forgot that we have yet to see Mr Chatterbox this season – Brad Thompson. What is it about old pitchers? Can’t they find a new career after retirement? But it was awful announcing until Fox Sports Midwest finally broke the mold and brought in Jimmy Baseball. Rickey bless his soul is Mr Nice but he thinks dead air time is time wasted on his contract. And with that I leave it to others to judge. Today it’s the Mets on ESPN so I will have new announcers to listen to (or not).

Of O’Neill and Carlson, who has the better RF arm?

    O’Neill by a far margin.

What are they going to do with Fowler?…. He still has time to turn it around in ST of course, and it’s not just the numbers he’s put up, he looks awful in his AB’s and is making all weak contact when he does hit it. He’s maybe hit the ball hard once or twice, but other than that it’s a K or a lazy pop out/ground out.

Brian…. that’s a great stat and something that I thought about for years. Heck, we know that Carlson can hit AAA/AA pitching and that is what we see plenty of at ST.

Now on the pitching QOO side…. equally meaningful. waiting

Brian, is this because no one runs on O’Neill? Career, Carlson has 33 assists and O’Neill has 7, including his MLB time.

    ChiTown –
Fowler is probably bored at ST, but at least he could put out a little for the fans. ST tickets aren’t inexpensive anymore.

No, it is scouting based. O’Neill’s arm has a 55 grade. Carlson’s is 40. On speed, Bader 60, Edman 55.

check those numbers 25, I think you got O’Neill wrong. BR shows 33 and 40 (O’Neill)

I just looked it up. Bader’s speed is 30.0 ft./sec. Edman’s is 29.4 ft./sec. Bader would win by a nose.

OK, thanks. I had always assumed Carlson had a solid arm due to his good assist numbers in right field. I didn’t realize that scouts looked at his arm as lousy. Sounds like it’s a left field only profile for him.

Can we declare Yadi’s speed with Bader and Edmond but not in FPS but FPD (foot per day)…….LOL

Whoops, my mistake. I was using Fangraphs and even though I hit “minors stats” on Tyler’s page, only the minors stats from 2018 and 2019 show up. Thanks for catching that.

I know nothing about Carlson’s arm but could it be that it is not strong but it is very accurate.

On the pipeline they have Carlson’s arm at a 55 (above avg). You need to ask some people in that saw him play in Peoria about his arm. Maybe the highlight of him throwing the runner out at 3B from right field corner.

Seems like O’Neill might be the fastest Cardinal. When healthy. he covers a lot of ground.
