It’s funny on Ozuna as he was okay as a Cardinal, but not quite enough to get us to elite offense status. In the two years before he joined the Cardinals we OPS’d .767 and .760 as a team. Then with Marcel we were .730 and .737.
Obviously he did not caused the drop, but my point is he was not considered a “must have” player after two years here. In the long run I like what we are doing giving time to O’Neill and Carlson, although as I have stated I would have preferred Carlson start next year. But between them and possibly Thomas, we need to see what we have and the only way to do that is let ’em play.
And I wonder if Williams might be a sleeper among the younger outfield corp – maybe a bit of a Luke Voit type where you do not realize what you have until you let him play some.

ParticipantI agree, Mike. Young players need to play. But be fed in slowly so you don’t have all that risk at once. Like with O’Neill, Bader, Carlson, Thomas, and Williams.

Participantgscott:
I don’t think DeWitt is going to allow the front office to try to fix their mistakes by just spending more money.
We are going forward in ’20 with what we got. We need two more players to play up to their potential to turn this “season” around. You all know the suspects.
I’m going to repeat this quote because it is spot on.
The Cardinals, with a wealth of good-not-great players, have a dozen different ways to improve their roster, none of which they’re interested in making.
‘none of which they’re interested in making’ = financially strapped budget-wise. I still blame Mozeliak for his bad decisions in the formation of this team. So much of the budget has been tossed to the wind.
August 30, 2020 at 11:58 am #137621Yep, I know I sound like a broken record but the magic year is 2022, assuming there is no work stoppage. We are probably going to be having these same discussions next season because I don’t see there to be enough payroll room to make significant acquisitions until after 2021.
After 2021 Fowler will be gone, Carp may be gone, Waino probably will be gone, Miller will be gone, Wong probably will be gone, CMart probably will be gone, Yadi may still be here but at a reduced rate, Wieters will be gone, and Miller should be gone. Carlson should be flourishing by then and guys like Gorman, Montero, and Liberatore should be entering the picture along with a new big bat from the outside.
Also, that is the season that the Cubs will lose many of their core players due to contract status. 2022 is the year to look forward to.

ParticipantMake an Ozuna type trade. You can do it and stay close to the budget. He made $9MM when he came to the Cardinals.
August 30, 2020 at 12:16 pm #137635Have you actually crunched the numbers? Put forth an actual player with an actual salary and how it would fit.
August 30, 2020 at 3:16 pm #137691Immediately buy a Powerball ticket if you predicted that Dexter Fowler would be leading the #stlcards in home runs and be just one off a share of the team RBI lead on August 30.

ParticipantI don’t have to gscottar. Bill has always said there was room to expand the budget somewhat for the right deal. If Mo could find another Ozuna type deal Bill would approve it.
August 30, 2020 at 5:49 pm #137718I doubt that or it would have already happened.
August 30, 2020 at 6:00 pm #137722bccran
ParticipantJust need to find the right trade. Low budget team than can use some talented young inexpensive pitching.
August 30, 2020 at 6:02 pm #137723
stlcard25ParticipantThere are just so few guys that fit that Ozuna mold right now out there…you’d need someone who’s a solid defender, good but not elite offense and hope that he takes the next step.
Someone like Andrew Benintendi comes to mind, or perhaps Brandon Nimmo or Michael Conforto. But even those guys are not yet to arbitration, so the cost would be higher. And of course there’s no given that they will become the players we need them to be. Conforto is probably the surest bet with the bat, and Benintendi as an overall player.
Right now, the Cards are in a funky spot where they have plenty of average talent in the minors and on the big league roster, but need a guy or two (Carlson, Gorman) to hit it big. That sounds like the story for St Louis since about 2014 or 2015.

ParticipantGood point, 25. I’m really excited about Carlson and Gorman. Feel that both have future all star potential. Also high on
Fletcher, Torres, and Walker. But would still try to trade for a ready outfielder if possible. Spotrac has a list of all the players in arbitration years. There are 30 outfielders on the list. I’ll try to do a study of those when time allows.August 30, 2020 at 7:06 pm #137728bccran
ParticipantHere’s a thought for starters. The Royals, in their starting rotation, have 2 starters with ERAs in the 5s, and two with ERAs in the 4s. Jorge Soler is in his 2nd arbitration year and is going to get expensive as a free agent in 2022. Seems to me this is close to an Ozuna profile. Soler hit 48 home runs in 2019 and drove in 117. Maybe we could swing a cross state trade. Would you rather have Soler, Bader, O’Neill, or Thomas in the OF?
August 30, 2020 at 7:27 pm #137731
jj-cf-stlParticipantHow about a 11.5mil 2020 contract that pays 4.3mil this season. Lets estimate 2.2mil remaining for 2020. No existing NTC.
He has a 2021 club option for 12.5mil. He’s on a seller from the NL West. He’s started 32 of his teams 34 games in CF. Plus defender at all 3 OF positions.
Currently slashing .322 / .396 / .458 / .853 / 131 ops+ (BR)
Same guy I wanted this offseason.
August 30, 2020 at 7:42 pm #137733bccran
ParticipantWho’s that, jj?
August 30, 2020 at 7:50 pm #137736
stlcard25ParticipantHe’s describing Starling Marte. While he’s a good player, I’d prefer the Cards to stay away from those who’ve been suspended for PEDs, personally.
August 30, 2020 at 9:36 pm #137747bccran
ParticipantRed flag on Marte.
August 31, 2020 at 7:55 am #137768I would certainly be interested in Soler but I am sure the asking price would be very high even though he only has one more year of control left after this one. The Royals would want some of our bigger name prospects.
August 31, 2020 at 8:41 am #137782bccran
ParticipantWho would go? Wong? O’Neill? Thomas? Carlos? Reyes? Rondon? Oviedo? Woodford? We have the chips.
August 31, 2020 at 8:54 am #137788I think it would take something like Gorman, Oviedo, and Whitley for Soler. He hit 48 HR’s last year and he’s only 28 years old.
August 31, 2020 at 9:35 am #137799But he only has one year of control left. That could bring the asking price down a little bit.
August 31, 2020 at 10:09 am #137812
stlcard25ParticipantYeah, there’s no way that Soler is worth Gorman, Oviedo and Whitely. He’s at a career 4.5 WAR, with 3.6 of it coming last year. He’s a slugger, but that’s about it. I’m sure the Royals would ask about any number of guys, but I’d never trade Gorman for him, much less Oviedo and Whitley. I’m not even sure what a fair trade would look like.
August 31, 2020 at 10:12 am #137814
jj-cf-stlParticipantBrad Millers 0 for 4 yesterday dropped his ops+ from 188 to 168.
Paul DeJongs 3 for 4 (two dbls) saw his ops+ climb from 96 to 122.
Dexter Fowlers 2 for 3 (HR, dbl) raised his 107 ops+ to 129.
other ops+ changes: Wong 67 to 62, Edman 85 to 88, Goldy 168 to 164, Molina 87 to 92, Bader 127 to 121, Carp 73 to 71 and Carlson 43 to 45.
Team ops+ through Sunday, 94

ParticipantIt’ll be good to get Ravelo and Dean back.
August 31, 2020 at 10:43 am #137823
stlcard25ParticipantIt’ll be good to get Ravelo and Dean back.
I don’t think there’s much chance that either of them play. Two OF spots and the DH, at minimum, are spoken for already. So unless they can play CF or against the occasional lefty, I would think they’ll be pinch hit bats at best.
