My experience with professional athletes is that if most earn one championship, that increases their thirst to win another. I don’t get the long-term implications some make that Fowler does not care. I would get it if it was backed up by quotes, but trying to read body language or such can be very misleading. For example, I look at Paul Goldschmidt and wonder sometimes if he has a pulse. His interviews are as boring as they come. But his teammates consider him the ultimate professional. Because he gets results, no fans question his commitment. Players are individuals, as different as we are.
September 1, 2020 at 12:08 pm #138102bccran, even though Carlson is young, he is NOT performing. The other players who some are saying shouldn’t be playing are still outperforming him. No one is saying Carlson will not perform later but right now he needs to be sitting or sent back to Springfield. Let the others show whether or not they deserve a bigger shot.

ParticipantForsch –
Seems like the Cards have made their decision for now at least on O’Neill and Bader. They know Carlson’s ceiling is higher and they’re letting him play through it.
September 1, 2020 at 12:55 pm #138104If they have made their decision on O’Neill and Bader, they should have traded them. It still doesn’t justify playing Carlson and his .498 OPS in a season when you are trying to win the World Series. He’s striking out at a 28.8% rate and needs to go to Springfield and work on a few things without the pressure.
September 1, 2020 at 3:42 pm #138117bccran
ParticipantThey want Carlson to face pitchers from outside the organization. At Springfield it’s the same everyday and he won’t get the development he would have had at Memphis.
September 1, 2020 at 3:58 pm #138118So you are going to back up the organization and defend them not having offense while you have spent this whole thread complaining about offense? Sure makes sense to me.
I guess Carlson is your flavor of the week.
September 1, 2020 at 5:33 pm #138125bccran
ParticipantCarson has always been my flavor, Forsch.
He’s one of the most highly rated prospects we’ve ever had. Gorman is also my flavor. As is Liberatore. I’d like for O’Neill to be my flavor, but he’s just not coming on the way he should. Bader’s not my flavor. Sorry. Ozuna was my flavor. For the umpteenth time, I think we should have extended him.September 1, 2020 at 7:29 pm #138160So you can continue to watch the offense suffer. Carlson is not ready. I just hope that he can come around a little by the end of the year or it will be a short postseason.
September 1, 2020 at 8:24 pm #138183bccran
ParticipantCarlson has improved over time at every level. Most think it will happen again at the major league level. I’d rather see him in the lineup than O’Neill or Bader right now. Because his future is brighter.
Personal choice.September 1, 2020 at 9:24 pm #138198It’s tough to take someone’s argument about poor offense serious when they want to keep a sub .500 OPS player in the lineup. The very argument that others have given you on why to play O’Neill, Thomas and Bader is the same one you just gave for Carlson. Hmmm.
September 1, 2020 at 9:29 pm #138201I think Shildt has found the lineup he likes so it probably won’t be changing anytime soon.
Oh by the way Ozuna had 3 homers and six RBI’s tonight. Good for him but our DH had 7 RBI’s tonight and makes $16M less than Ozuna.
September 1, 2020 at 10:42 pm #138207bccran
ParticipantCarlson is a totally different case, Forsch. You know that. He’s by far the highest ceiling young player. They’re giving him a taste of the majors so he can see what he needs to work on. You’ll notice, however, that the offense has come alive now without O’Neill and Bader in the lineup.
September 1, 2020 at 10:53 pm #138208bccran
ParticipantOzuna with 3 home runs tonight and 6 RBI.
But we have O’Neill.September 1, 2020 at 11:10 pm #138212No, O’Neill is not playing. We have your man, Carlson. After all, he has 1 HR and 5 RBI….for the year. He has 73 plate appearances to O’Neill’s 80 and Carlson didn’t even play until the 6th game of the season.
September 2, 2020 at 7:57 am #138219bccran
ParticipantCarlson is the future. Getting valuable experience now, vs. facing the same old in system pitching day after day in Springfield. It’s the decision of professional baseball people. We’re not of that ilk, Forsch.
September 2, 2020 at 8:12 am #138220
stlcard25ParticipantThose same professional baseball people chose to move on from Ozuna, too.

ParticipantIt seems that there are young players that do well at AAA and get a chance at the big time. For several reason they don’t fair well and for other reasons…the team trades for a better player or younger guys pass them by. They may get traded or sent back to AAA and never see Busch again. They may remain in your memory or not, finally they appear in BW’s “Where Are They Now” pieces. You all know those guys. Carlson is not going to be one of those guys.
September 2, 2020 at 8:54 am #138226bccran
ParticipantDid they choose to move on from Ozuna?
Did his agent originally ask for a very large long term contract?
Did he ultimately sign with Atlanta for a year without coming back to the Cards for another offer? Guess we’ll never know. If several of the young outfielders continue to struggle, maybe the Cards will go after Ozuna this off season. If his arm is healed.September 2, 2020 at 9:14 am #13822914NyquisT
ParticipantNope… not happening. Don’t forget it is Mozeliak making the calls.
NEWS FLASH: Ozuna is gone and not coming back…. let’s move on.

If several of the young outfielders continue to struggle, maybe the Cards will go after Ozuna this off season. If his arm is healed. They offered him $200K less than Atlanta and he bailed. That they didn’t up their offer tells me all I need to know. I don’t have exact quotes but it sounded like Mo was ready to move on from Ozuna last year before the season ended.
Ozuna is having a good year, to be sure. Better than all our outfielders, in fact. But you can’t take these small samples and extrapolate results out for fantasy scenarios. The Braves’ stadium is a bandbox and the Cards’ punishes right handed hitters. There is just too much to take into account.
September 2, 2020 at 9:19 am #138232Ozuna with 3 home runs tonight and 6 RBI.
But we have O’Neill.Actually I would compare Ozuna to Brad Miller since both are playing DH. The Braves have figured out that Ozuna’s defense is a nightmare. So if you compare Ozuna to Miller things look a little different.
$18M for your DH vs. $2M for your DH? Easy decision.
September 2, 2020 at 9:21 am #138233
stlcard25ParticipantIf the Cards had known that there would be a DH, perhaps Ozuna would have been more of interest. Like gscottar said, his defense is tragic. I wonder if in the future, when the DH becomes permanent, teams will plan more for the hulking DH who has no place in the field?
September 2, 2020 at 10:03 am #138237Reading through this thread has been enjoying. Several folks with their minds made up defending their side. Sounds like politics..lol. But I will side with Carlson. Yes he would have been in the minors for some period but folks you know as well as I do – THERE ARE NO MINORS and the ‘Alternate Site’ (what a name) offers only the same pitchers (not major league ready) to swing your bat at occasionally. Hammonds Field is closed to the public but I would like to see them working out and I think some is being done inside. Anyway, Carlson has shown that he isn’t Jose Martinez in the field and that he has a power arm and a thinkers head for covering on that double play. He is learning major league pitching as that is the only place he will see it now but his opposition thinks that he would be a offensive powerhouse right out of the gate.

Shucks and here I was thinking it was Yadi. Bet he is in the lineup tonight because tomorrow is a day off in Chicago – what a wonderful place for a day off.
September 2, 2020 at 10:04 am #138238Just think bccran, we could have Thomas or O’Neill getting that valuable experience every day without worry of being out of the lineup. (Well, O’Neill has kind of had that, so far this year.) They could provide everything that Carlson is currently providing and more.
I should probably repeat that I think Carlson is the future. I just don’t think he should be the today. This thread is about the deficiencies of the offense and was started by bccran. Yet, he keeps supporting the poorest performing batter on the team with more than 20 plate appearances. And he trails the next lowest batter in OPS by over 100 basis points. His OPS is .498 and the next lowest is Carpenter at .603. That’s sad. Send him down to work on things.
If we are going to give an audition to OFs this year, let’s see what Thomas, O’Neill and Bader can do. Obviously, Carlson needs a little more time. Edman should not be playing OF. He should be on the INF. Let’s get back to common sense
September 2, 2020 at 10:19 am #138247I wrote about the situation for members today.
For TCN members, I go deeper on a topic discussed with @DannyMacTV this AM – How Brad Miller's emergence has indirectly complicated the #stlcards OF evaluation, leading to me to wonder if either Matt Carpenter or Dylan Carlson needs to sit,. ($) https://t.co/1yq15FWTX7 pic.twitter.com/avlStSnorR
