All those averages you are showing are head and shoulders better than anything we see day to day in the outfield! I love Puig also but think Reddick is much better fit for the “cardinal” way!

Are we talking about Yasiel Puig and Josh Reddick, neither of whom has been worth even 1 win above replacement since 2018…and pretending they are an upgrade?
gscottar – everyone seems to talk about the dry powder in 2022. But remember that the Cardinals M.O. is not to hand out long term high dollar contracts to free agents. They broke the mold with Leake, Fowler, Cecil, Miller, etc. Didn’t work.

I suppose that could be a possibility this July or next winter but if they go after free agents the two at the top of my wish list are Conforto and Scherzer. I mentioned that in the Trades thread but apparently this thread has basically consumed all other threads except the game threads.
My main point is this: I only care about the W-L record and I don’t care if it is a high scoring team, low scoring team, good OF, bad OF, etc…. I think this team is capable of winning the division this year but probably can’t go far in the playoffs. I do expect additions before 2022 and I do expect our 2022 team to be a serious WS contender.
As far as next years free agents go I would hope they go after Carlos Correa for SS! Talk about an upgrade!

At worst, O’Neill provides defense that neither of them can even come close to touching. As far as offense, I haven’t given up on Tyler yet but then again, I don’t panic over small samples. As for Williams, he’s not a guy I put any stock in so sure, they’re an upgrade. Neither of them have any place once Bader returns as they wouldn’t be one of the three best outfielders.
I would take either over O’Neill anytime anywhere against any pitcher! I figure it this way! It is the 9th inning, the game is on the line you are the opposing manager and you are about to have to face either Puig Reddick or O’Neill! I would bet that 30 out of 30 would pick to face O’Neill! I may be wrong but I doubt it!

I don’t see any reason to trade perfectly useful players for an upgrade when there are upgrades to be had for only money on the market (and the money is available). Unlike every example that bc listed, the players on the market this winter are not mid tier players who get overpaid due to a good year or two before free agency (Miller excepted, who was clearly past prime). Players like Seager, Correa, Story, Conforto, etc are difference making stars who are capable of boosting any lineup and team and will be paid as such. If the Cards aren’t in on a big upgrade this off-season, I suspect fans will be very angsty.

Good points I suppose! The bottom line is you prefer O’ Neill over Puig or Reddick and I would prefer either of these two! Unfortunately we are stuck watching O’Neill swing and miss over and over and have to listen to “ he just needs more chances” I have seen enough to know! Yes he might hit 25 homers for a bottom feeder team one day that are willing to live with his 200 K’s to go along with them! I just just prefer if the Cardinals are not that team!

DeJong is more than capable as long as he isn’t relied upon being “the guy”. Since we are on page 39 talking about how bad our OF is I would assume that is where the upgrade would come from if there is an upgrade.
Also keep in mind that Gorman could be in the lineup next year.

Exactly. The solid D up the middle is great, and if he would be dropped down in the order .235 wouldn’t be such a stick in the spokes and a homer a week could come in handy. But somebody has to step up as middle of the order worthy. I wouldn’t move Carlson up until he puts up actual results. So far its just hype and sabr spew.

And the Cardinals were terrible in 1976. Lynn McGlothen’s 5-0 shutout of the Cubs on Opening Night (Friday) at Busch was just about the highlight of the season.

I know that offense is exciting but that only goes so far. What if we were losing most games 10-9? Those games would be filled with excitement but would fans be happy? I doubt it. Instead of this thread we would have a thread about how bad our pitching is.

offense along with a decent W-L record?I think that is a false choice. If I am running the front office I would view my job as putting a winning team on the field. If winning isn’t good enough for Cardinal fans then we don’t deserve the BFIB title.
We’re losing a ton of young kids as fans because they think the game’s too slow. Not enough action. They won’t sit through a 3 hour 1-0 game laden with walks and Ks.
MLB needs to think about the future of the game.Cardinal fans want to see offense, defense, good starting pitching, and a solid bullpen. You can’t take offense out of that equation.
