Much better chance of being accurate than any clickbait writer or talking head.

The Los Angeles Dodgers opened as the +300 favorite by SportsBetting.ag to add Arenado — a California native — to their star-studded lineup. However, where he would fit with Max Muncy at third base and Freddie Freeman at first is a big question. The Dodgers would likely be looking to keep Arenado at third in a corner infield mix that also includes Miguel Vargas.

However, it didn’t take long for the team the Dodgers dominated in this year’s World Series to charge to the front of the pack with oddsmakers.

“League sources strongly indicated to The Athletic that a deal for Arenado is not a possibility the organization has considered. And Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes said on the record Monday that Max Muncy would be the team’s third baseman on Opening Day.”

    Max Muncy: 3.0 WAR – .237/.358/.494/.852 – $14.5 million contract
    Arenado: 2.5 WAR – .272/.325/.394/.719 – $32 million contract – $5 million Rockies are paying = $27 million

Why would any team, much less the Dodgers, trade prospects to increase payroll and get a worse player?

I just don’t understand the Arenado to the Dodgers narrative….

The Yankees and Cubs have been in talks, but the Yankees want the Cubs to pay at least $10 million of the $32.5 million that Bellinger is owed for the 2025 season and his $25 million salary or $5 million buyout in 2026.

From how I am reading that quote, the Yankees want the Cubs to pay $10 million in 2025, and either the entirety of the buyout in 2026, or another $10 million towards Bellinger’s salary in 2026.

That should give a framework of what the Cardinals will have to pay down to move Arenado.

1)He’s from SoCal and would approve a trade there.
    2)Dodgers can afford him.
    3) Dodgers have Taylor who the Cardinals could take to off set money that could play a RH UT role and expire after 2025
    4) Arenado would be a big upgrade defensively at 3B over Muncy.
    5) Muncy can play 2B. Arenado, Betts, Muncy, Freeman in the IF. ? Lf, Edman, Pages/Conforto in the OF and the ability to trade Lux or use him as a UT IF. OR Muncy can play more of a UT role between the 1B, 2B, 3B and be available if injuries, which he hasn’t been the best at avoiding either.

It seems to fit. That’s why. But Dodgers have said they aren’t going to trade for him though. But who knows.

I’d trade Arenado for whatever I can get without paying a dime of his salary. Take on only expiring after 2025 contracts to off set anything. Even if it’s not much at all, just get out from the contract and move on with the kids and play ball. Arenado has never seemed to fit or enjoy being in STL to me. Get rid of the money. Move Helsley and Fedde too. Probably stuck with Gray since it sounds like he won’t waive the NTC, but I’d sure try to entice him with Atlanta who need a SP.

There was only one big name player who didn’t sign autographs last Winter Warm Up to help raise money for the Cardinals charitable arm. Any guesses who it was?

They have Gavin Lux for 2B/SS. He produced a .703 OPS & 2.1 WAR last year versus Arenado’s .719 OPS and 2.5 WAR.

Lux costs $2.7 million, Arenado costs $27 million.

Arenado is trying to fit a square peg in a round hole on the Dodgers.

How much could Nado get as a FA today, LA? Your thread, I’ll ask you.

I wouldn’t. Arenado’s contract is basically even. If you give him away, all you’ve done is save Bill the value of the contract. A portion of that money should be re-invested in the team in the form of prospects. The more $ you send, the better the prospect. But yes, he has to go. Just don’t let them con people into thinking a salary dump is tbe only way. It may be what they actually do, but it’s not the only way.

I think he is probably in the $10-15 million range in free agency right now.

We know Muncy is a better player right now, and he is making $14.5 million. It would stand to reason Arenado would be worth less than that.

We know the Yankees have stated that Arenado is not worth his current contract, and they have asked the Cubs to pay down Bellinger’s contract by $10 million per year (or the buyout in the second year). It would appear to get the Yankees interested, the Cardinals will have to pay down at least $10 million each of the next two years, plus $5 in the third year. Even then, you are probably not getting good prospects back.

Well, the principal motivation for the Cardinals to trade Arenado is to save money.

And we all know they aren’t investing these savings in the minor league development staff. How many minor league development coaches have we hired away from the Brewers, Guardians, Rays, Astros, Mariners and Orioles this offseason?

Well, the principal motivation for the Cardinals to trade Arenado is to save money.

“This is both good and bad. Arenado’s contract is not underwater, or at least not that underwater, which is good news. The bad news is this means you can’t unload his entire contract and get anything of value for him back.”

This is my point. Bill has profited immensely from the Cardinals. If he wants the fans to continue to support the team, he doesn’t need to dump this salary in order to make money. Aquire some prospects to stock the system we are supposed to be building. ALL WE’VE DONE SO FAR is add directors, coaches, supervisors. And shed payroll. Add players in the form of prospects. It costs $. Arenado is still a potential assett. Other teams can’t outright sell players.

Mlbtr has Gleybar Torres estimated at 2/36mil and Goldschmidt at 1/15mil, as FA’s.
So far, the markets signings are exceeding the estimates significantly. Maybe its top-enders getting theirs, but O’Neill did ok too.
I doubt Arenado could sign a 3yr deal this winter. Trying to credit him for 2/40mil, but that’s far from the 3/64 owed by stl. Who knows on his 2027? 10mil? Still underwater 14mil. Good luck Mo.

    O’Neill signed for 3/49.5mil (BAL).

Could Arenado get that offer as a FA today?

I would think Arenado would get at least what O’Neil did get as Arenado still very good defensively and still solid hitter and stays healthy and that is something you can’t say for O’Neil

I agree, 3/50mil could be a fair “ballpark” amount. Mlbtr had O’Neill estimated at 3/42mil.

Jnevel had 3/50 a couple days ago. Tweek it as each wants to, but the 3/64mil stl owes Arenado is locked in. I am getting curious on Goldy’s free agency now.

Just a reminder that just because the Dodgers may not do a trade for Arenado it doesn’t mean that he is staying in STL. There are other teams out there looking for a 3B.

Possibly so. You would think the Astros wouldn’t want to lose Bregman and Tucker both but who knows.

My guess is that Arenado ends up with the Yankees, Phillies, or Astros. Probably in that order.

I think Arenado’s defense is being underestimated. Yes, he failed to make some plays that he used to make routinely. But between those plays he still made a lot of highlight reel plays that get outs and win games. I also think his bat would liven up if he was in an environment where he feels he has a chance to win. Arenado’s past performance over the years still puts him in the HOF one day. He’s now only 33 years old. Arenado has statistical value along with respect and veteran presence. The Cardinals should keep him unless they get a trade offer for him that makes sense.

Since it’s Christmas time I am going to make a wish.

I wish Arenado stays in St. Louis and that he hits about .290 with 35 homeruns and 117 runs batted in. And leads the Cardinals into the playoffs.

…he hits about .290 with 35 homeruns and 117 runs batted in

He’s 5 or 6 years past the prime portion of his career, so those numers are unlikely. In particular, the 117 RBI’s would require both a return to top Arenado form (2015 to 2019) AND some guys getting on base in front of him.

Out of 30 big league clubs in 2024, we were 22 in runs scored /game, but only two clubs (Angels and chi sox) were significantly lower. We just don’t have guys that can get on base. Ever see the movie Money Ball, with Brad Pitt? (spoiler alert–it’s all about men on base, lol)

I don’t think so. Arenado has shown a rather precipitous decline the last two years, and is coming off the worst offensive output of his career.

This year, he would probably have to take a pillow contract. Two years would be max. $15 million AAV max on a two year deal.

I also agree with KeepComingBack – he wasn’t underwater for the Cardinals this year. He was 4th on the team in WAR. Normally, you wouldn’t trade that kind of production, except the Cardinals are poor now. The concern is his trendline and how much underwater he will be next year and the two years after that.

I’ll take the under on Golbschmidt.
