I had figured another team might pay up to $10 million of Arenado’s salary and was guessing the Cardinals would have to go that low if they wanted to find a taker. I guess $11 million is close enough. I’m a little surprised they actually made that trade in the end. I guess Chaim really couldn’t not compete his stated goal. That’s the 2nd most money a baseball team has ever given another team (Mets with Scherzer being number one).

Good luck Nolan. Sorry we couldn’t field a good enough team around you and Goldy to win one.

Maybe the Dbacks will now sign Goldy to make it a real reunion.

I mentioned that earlier too GScott, I’d probably root for them or at least be interested in keeping an eye open on how they are doing.

I saw that part of the deal is that we are paying Arenado’s deferred salary as well. So he will get checks with the Cardinal logo on them for quite a few years still.

Him and Goldy were almost worth it. Actually they were worth it as we made the run in ‘22, but things went south quickly in the two game playoff sweep. That should have been at least an NLCS year with Albert and Yadi together one last time. Dang – what a let down.

    I don’t see Nolie hitting Rats numbers – I would guess more like .245, 18, 65.

Not a multi-year contract to be found. Chaim inherited a logjam at 1B/DH and 3B. Poof! Congrats on moving him i had serious doubts it would happen. Much closer to home too. NEXT!

I guess this means we are stuck with another year of watching Gorman agitate the oxygen molecules around the plate.

CinF, when he was getting every day at bats last summer and settled in, he really wasn’t that bad in the field or at the plate. Which is why I hope in the beginning of the year they tell him the spot is yours, just don’t suck!

Well, all things must pass. Kenny Boyer, Scotty Rolen and Davy Freese are followed by the departure of the legendary Arenado…

CFIC: Of course I’d like nothing better than to see Gorman transform himself into a positive factor in our lineup, unfortunately occasional flashes just haven’t done it for me.

All jokes aside, when the corners of the IF were occupied by Goldschmidt and Arenado, it was my view that my favorite team boasted the finest pair of corner IF’ers that the Big Leagues had seen since Brooks and Boog and I was convinced there was a very good chance that they’d lead the Cardinals to the promised land. Especially in 2022 when those two names were alongside of future HOF’ers named Pujols and Molina. At any rate, the current whiz-kid Redbird manager made certain that it wasn’t meant to be.

Nado is running out of time to fix those postseason numbers. Rats always says he’s not clutch and the postseason agrees.

So, it is Marmol’s fault the Cardinals lost in the 2022 Wild Card? I agree that using an injured Helsley was questionable in Game 1, but the offense scored just three runs over the two games. Philly was the better team as they proved when they went on to the World Series.

The big boys did not hit:
    Arenado 1-for-8
    Goldy 0-for-7

    But they were not alone:
    Donovan 0-for-7
    Edman 1-for-6 with a walk
    Molina 1-for-8
    Pujols 2-for-8

I think Brian is saying we need to bring Albert back in 2028?

Late to the party but great to read the good news. I really enjoyed watching Arenado when he was with the team, but it was best for both sides to split at this point. I didn’t really care what the return on Arenado was as the primary concern was opening up a spot for Wetherholt to play 3B rather than Gorman with Gorman at DH/backup 1B/2B/3B. I personally at this point would keep Donovan until at least the trade deadline as his value won’t go down much and at this point Donovan and Noot are the veterans on the position player side.

    Brian said:

I find it interesting that Arizona won only two more games than the Cardinals in 2025 and also finished in fourth place in their division. They have one playoff appearance in the last 8 years and last won their division in 2011. At least it is warmer there.

Despite the minor difference in 2025 wins, Arizona had a much better team and is the on uptick though while STL is on the down turn. Arizona has the advantage of having a very good position player core with a few 3 guys who have appeared on MVP ballots in Carroll, Marte, Perdomo and a 4th good core piece in Moreno. For the low cost to them I like the deal as low risk with Arenado providing good defense. Their top prospects are 3B types though and Lawlar will have to learn CF with this move. They definitely need some more SP though with Burnes not returning until alter in the year.

    “He was a good cardinal.

The one thing I remember about him was the 2021 season when he went in front on the cameras and said ” we have to quit blowing games like this”.

Love the guy. He wanted to be here.”

this. i always liked the guy. i lived in Denver when he was there, and I’d go to Coors just to watch him play. i was so excited and hopeful when we got him.

and now he’s gone. given away, and nothing in return. i know we had to cut ties, but still, it’s a disappointment.

s’long, Nolan. best to ya, buddy

Yeah, he burned it down before game 1 got underway when he placed Albert in the 2 slot and Donovan in the 5 slot which, in my view, tossed a monkey wrench into the dynamics of what was a very formidable line-up. He was determined to get cute prior to the most important game of the ’22 season. Once the game was underway, anyone who witnessed the manner in which he managed both his SP’er and his BP could clearly see that the Cardinal manager was entirely unqualified to manage a Big League baseball team. It was without a doubt the worst game management I’ve ever witnessed from a Cardinal manager. A veritable disgrace.

Oh he’s serious, Albert. In all of these years, I’ve never seen one post from GameCard where he wasn’t being frank. That’s not to say GameCard isn’t a great guy, because he most definitely is. He just wouldn’t be at the top of your list to invite down to your local pub to drink vast quantities of Wild Turkey and chase wild women…….when we were unattached of course.

Anyway, we all knew Arenado was as good as gone, but some here still think Donovan will be traded. NEWS FLASH…..he will not. Whom else do we have to show the way and set the prime example to our 2026 class of Kiddie Cards? We could have a coaching staff of Whitey Herzog, George Sissler, Walter Alston, Yogi Berra and Billy Martin, but it’s not going to have much impact if you don’t have at least one relatively young and hip veteran whom does things the right way for these youngsters to look up to and try to emulate. Who else on this team besides Donovan fits this description? Gorman?……Libby?…..I think not. But now with Marte off the board, I would say that the odds of him being moved have risen from 5% to about 8%. He’s not going anywhere.

About as good of a landing spot as he could get. I sort of predicted this.

Burleson should be able to take on a leadership role along with Donovan this year.

Winn also seems to be a very serious young man

From the outside looking in it did not appear that either Goldschmidt nor Arenado were vocal leaders – I’m not saying that didn’t work hard at their craft and set a great example – but it doesn’t seem like they provided ‘in your face’ leadership. Maybe they did and kept it all very private.

Anyhow as I said in another thread – selfishly I hope Donovan isn’t traded.

After a year of an Arenado trade rumors in which so many predicted this team, that team, this player, that player no one could have predicted Jack Martinez to be the return. The Arenado trade value was not the sticking point it was all the financials that Bloom had to deal with. I guess some are scrambling to find out more about Martinez…. you won’t find him on the ARI top-30 list or too many spots at all. He is a 22 y.o. 8th round pick last year. A RHP who is presently on a Rookie League roster. Nothing against him but the chances of seeing him at Busch are very long.

Anyway, its over. Everyone can breathe a sigh of relief although many are confused, but there is little complaining and some best wishes for a guy that was half of perhaps the greatest STL corner infielders ever. C’est la vie….. onward and upward.

ps. Don’t Trade Donovan. His versatility is way too valuable.

Cardinals fans can rejoice! DeWitt will be saving another $11 million over the next two years!

Bill is going to be amazed at how much more money he makes by running a low-payroll club than a mid-tier payroll club.

To the welfare line we go!!!
