It’s becoming entirely clear that the StL. Cardinals are an organization that resides in the lower tier of teams that are considered to be an undesireable destination for any talented player who hopes to offer his services to a team that has a chance to be successful. The Cardinals are taking on a lousy reputation and, in my view, it’s a standing that’s well deserved. It’s my guess that the word is out around the league to avoid this collection of front office clowns.
They could say Firmin is the reserve, meaning not a permanent replacement. The replacement is a different animal. The powderpuffs would have to be tough.
I am aware we can guess. I wonder why nobody has asked.
Because he would not answer that question or would give some generic answer of “if Arenado is traded his replacement would be settled in Spring Training.”
But who else on the current roster would it be?
Donovan?
Saggesse?
Walker?
Fermin?
Weatherholt?I think Gorman gets first crack at it over that group. Donovan is needed at 2B, they seem committed to leaving Walker in the OF, Saggesse and Fermin are UT type players at the moment, and Weatherholt needs at least one more year in the minors.

How low are they planning to take payroll too, Goldschmidt, Lynn, Gallegos and Gibson is around a 48 million reduction, Arenado and Helsley would be roughly $30 million. I think Gray increased $10 million that’s about a $68 million reduction from last years payroll, with some Arbitration increases to factor in.
I’m also not sold they will keep Gray, if he has a good year I could see him being traded at the deadline if he waives the no trade clause.
This really does not add up, they act like only 3 people show up for games when in fact they have been in the top 5 in MLB attendance for the most part of the last 30 years.
Remember when we traded a serviceable 3rd sacker, Placido Polanco, for a star hot corner guy, Scott Rolen?
Why not do the same, only in reverse, from the Cardinals perspective?Why not keep Arenado?
I think the argument is that management isn’t going to try to compete in 2025, so why not shed some salary.
So a better question would be’why doesn’t management want to try to compete’?
They dodged a bullet by not extending Goldy a year ago. Why not at least make a token effort a fielding a 85 to 90 win ball club. Arenado’s defense has declined, but he still can make highlight reel plays.
Donovan has won a GG for his overall defense.
Gorman is the logical choice to move to 3B since he came up as a third baseman. But he’s still a work in progress. His defense at 2B is only passable. If fans start comparing his defense at 3B to what Arenado could do, it’s going to be tough. Also, Gorman’s offense, with all those strikeouts, have worn me out. I don’t see, at this point, how Gorman even deserves to be a starter. I think Donovan should take over at 3B if Arenado is traded. Saggesse looks like he’s ready. Fermin and even Prieto could back him up at 2B, and both could play SS for awhile, if needed. Or MO could trade for a decent backup utility infielder, or sign one of the free agents.
Let’s see what happens at spring training. If Gorman looks like he’s going to hit, and keep hitting, then let him start the season at 2B. If Gorman looks like he’s going to still be striking out 37.6% of the time, then let Saggesse have the opportunity to play 2B.
Arenado doesnt want to stay through this rebuild it appears. I have even more respect for him now. The cardinals are letting him and his agent to try to get him a suitable deal.

It’s clear they can’t compete or desire to compete for the level of talent it takes to win at a high level. The game has passed them by and deeper pockets are at the poker table now. They need to cash out and quick.

The headline firmly states he will approve trade to 6 teams. Than it goes on to say they don’t really know. Maybe they meant preffered teams.
If Arenado is traded to the LAA, and Taylor Ward is envolved, Ward will draw between 18 and 20mil total over his next two arb seasons, IF tendered (2026).

I keep wondering if posters on here realize how winnable the NL Central is going to be in 2025? Especially now with Adames moving out west with the Giants. 87 wins might take it. And there’s a chance the Cards could win 87 games.

I don’t think he will stay in STL. I would put the likelihood of him being a Cardinal by the end of this month at 10%.
I have read that Cubs are pushing hard to trade for Kyle Tucker of the Astros and sign Roki Sasaki. If they land those two players they will run away with the NLC.
