My go-tos in those days were SI and The Sporting News. Under different ownership in a different time, today they both are barely a shell of what they once were.
I guess anybody is entitled to say anything they want, and some website will post it.
That said, I had not considered packaging Arenado with Helsley in a trade. That would allow the Cardinals to unload Arenado’s contract. I don’t like it, and I hope it doesn’t happen. But it may be necessary if the Cardinals are positioned to lose money starting in 2025. Nobody, no matter how wealthy they are, wants to throw money away in a losing proposition. It’s just not fun.
The first subscription I ever purchased was to The Sporting News and I was just a kid. By the time it came in the mail most of the box scores, stats, and transactions were almost a week old but I didn’t care. I read it from cover to cover. I miss that magazine.
Mud, we don’t really know if the Cardinals are about to lose money or not. I kind of doubt if they are but we don’t get to see their books so who knows? If it were up to me I wouldn’t attach Helsley to Arenado but if that is the only way to get a deal done then they may have to.
As I kid my parents got me subscriptions to both SI and TSN at times. It got to be where my annual birthday present was another year of TSN.
These days I use those old magazines as items to get autographed. They make a great collectible that way. I have a big binder now of autographed SIs and other magazines. Really the only TSN I have autographed was by Bill Walton – ironic that I have a basketball guy sign the “baseball bible.” But it had a great photo of Walton from his UCLA days on the cover and he put a nice large signature on it.
That unbelievable 88 game UCLA winning streak clearly places Bill Walton as the leader of the greatest collegiate basketball team in NCAA history. And if not for all of the devastating injuries, Walton may well have also gone down in history as the greatest NBA center of all time. Russell was obviously a great shot blocker and Chamberlain/Jabbar were overwhelming offensive weapons, but Bill Walton could do it all. On top of all that, “Big Red” always impressed me as an incredibly likeable person.

Agreed, I think Arenado can be moved without attaching him and not watering down Helsley. I also don’t like any of these “ideas” that were listed by the news sites. As far as them losing money. I doubt it and I’m more optimistic about the idea of this young line-up and taking the pressure off Gorman and Walker and just letting them play than I’ve been about the line up the last few years. We’ll see about the pitching though and what all they actually do.
It’s critical in our rebuild that we get maximum return for Arenado. We won’t have other opportunities like it. Even if it means paying salary to get higher end prospects.

When I met Walton in 2022 he was indeed very cordial and light hearted. I was wearing a Cardinal shirt and as I walked up to the table he goes, “The Cardinals are a great organization.”
Now that was our last year of being a “great organization.’ Had Big Red been around today he would probably say, “The Cardinals were a great organization.”
This is the exact scenario I proposed. Arenado to the Dodgers for Taylor and a prospect or two.

It’s a pathetic move by this organization to float this crap. They want him gone and the back channeling to certain networks is messed up. Basically forcing Nolan’s hand. He will not be a Cardinals next year.

A zero leverage trade to waste months of the offseason on is perfect for Mo and the outsiders monitoring his activities.Maybe ask him something we don’t already know. Like what is the current thinking for filling the 3B slot if Arenado does get moved.
That’s a win/win. If Gorman fails, the draft picks are better. If Gorman succeeds, we flip him for prospects and put another questionable at 3B, while holding payroll down, and drafting picks as high as possible. Poor clubs are always in search of the elusive “core”.
