They have saved anywhere from $30-$35 million off payroll from last year to this year, I know they have hired some more coaches, but have they done anything else….like are there any plans for pitching labs or facility upgrades. I may have missed what there plans are on facility upgrades for player development.
Just hiring 10 or so more coaches doesn’t really justify the payroll savings year over year.
Those savings are allowing the Cardinals to give away free tickets during the “Flash Sale”. I don’t guess they think anyone will pay to see this team. At any rate, it’s nice of them to hand out free tickets to loyal Redbird fans, but it’s no way to run a proverbial railroad if Billy Jr. wants to line his pockets…
JJ – That’s right. The compensation bloated players from other teams who actually think playing a sport 8 months out of the year is worth an annual salary of $30 million. Or $40 million like Bregman. You root for those guys. I’ll root for the kids.

You can hate on the players who have earned their big salaries, it’s common among the “have-nots”, but you didn’t mind those big contracts in our past did you? Pujols, Wainwright, Molina, Holliday, Nado, Goldy, etc.

Sellers.I have no issue with players making a lot of money, as the economics of the sport support it. When your industry only has about 800 people on the planet that can do what it takes to make a world class organization, then it follows that the compensation will be elite.
And yes, the positive aspect about doing a rebuild, or “reset” if they want to call it that, is seeing who among the younger players will provide some excitement. I saw where Victor Scott sort of coined the term “youngry” to describe the guys who are working hard to get going on a career path.
I’m sorry, JJ, but you saying that I “fall in line like a duck” is insulting. We all have a right to our own opinions and don’t need to be insulted for mine. I’ve always relished the young guys coming through the system.
As a former high school, college, and semi-pro pitcher I always cheer for the guys trying to make it. And, yes, when I see what the Dodgers have done and now Bregman’s contract for a sub .800 OPS player I feel there’s a real growing problem in MLB. The lack of a solid salary cap or equitable revenue sharing is going to push MLB to the edge of danger as an industry. But again, that’s JMHO.Tying in to Cranny’s comments about the state of MLB, columnist Jay Mariotti paints a bleak picture of the sport both now and in the future, unless they get their financial discrepancies cleaned up.

Baseball fandom is passed on from generation to generation. Problem with that, is that younger generations now are into constant action sports – soccer, hockey, lacrosse, etc. Baseball is too slow for them. Especially now with the 3 result at bat. So many of these bloated long term contracts are going to come back and bite some of the owners. And you can’t proceed on successfully as an industry when 2/3 of the teams have no chance for a championship.

How do you label it “poor performance” when the Cardinals have had at least 90 victories or more in 3 out of the last 5 full seasons? And only 2 losing seasons this century?
What the Cardinals did a decade or two ago is irrelevant. They have been hemmoraging attendance the last couple of seasons and the team must expect it to be even worse this year or they wouldn’t be giving tickets away for basically free. The fans of STL have spoken and it appears to me they are not pleased with the performance of this organization.
14 – Why should he be persona non grata? His job is to set the team up to win. Then we see Goldy and Arenado slide backwards, Walker and Gorman regress, and the pitchers he got in July 2023 go on the IL. Is that his
fault?The elephant in the room for this rebuild (I refuse to call it a reset) is the No Trade Clause.
Ask yourself this: Would Nolan Arenado, Sonny Gray, Willson Contreras, and Miles Mikolas still be on this roster if they didn’t have no trade clauses. I think the answer is no. That tells us the true motivation of the organization. They are forced to call it a “reset” because they have no choice. What their heart is really set on is doing a rebuild and clearing out all of the big contracts but they have been blocked from doing so.
What this means to me is the rebuild is going to take at least two or three years because that is how long it is going to take to get all of the above mentioned contracts off the books. The Cardinals are real good at doing this through attrition because it takes no effort (Goldy, Kitty, Middleton, Lynn, Gibson). The low hanging fruit rule certainly applies. The rebild will be over after the 2027 season.
The rebuild is already in motion with the new sophisticated equipment being purchased and the new people in charge of instruction up and down the organization.
Money has almost always cured no trade clauses in MLB….Cardinal ownership wasn’t willing to kick in the necessary money to get the players to waive them.

That is one aspect of it. The other aspect is clearing out high priced vets off of the big league roster to make way for younger players. Other than the low hanging fruit that part of the plan has hit a snag. It will take a couple of years to clear them out.
Mikolas and Matz are probably untradeable. Arenado is proving to be the same. They want to hold onto Fedde and Helsley. Pretty much it.
It looks like deferred compensation will be more common in MLB. Arenado has some of his salary deferred.
In recent years, per the Forbes annual list that estimates MLB teams’ financial structure, many clubs did not carry any debt on their balance sheets, This will change as more contracts are deferred. Teams will need to take on some risk in order to get the top players.
It will be interesting to see how that impacts clubs long term. It will be like a bunch of Bonilla contracts out there well into the future, but for a lot more money than Bobby’s paltry $1M per year.
Posters 30 years from now will be talking about how “that mega deal the Cardinals did with Jordan Walker back in the late ‘20s really makes it tough on this 2055 team.”

I’ll match your expensive vet propaganda with ownership facts. Whether you continue is up to you. The expensive vets are not lowering payroll, or causing the farm to underproduce, that’s on ownership.
