I’ve read it a couple places referring to Mo botching the HOU transaction, by announcing the trade before he had his NTC’s approval.
I probably typed it somewhere too, because on the surface its true, but does it really fly as a “botch”?
Bill and Mo could write a best seller on the standard operating procedures of any mlb transaction. Why did they present Arenado a take it or leave it, just needs your signature, trade request AFTER botching the trade announcement to the press??
Nolan either accepts or becomes Mo’s fall guy? In fact, Arenado is still dominating Mo’s to-do list, like we needed reminded, but it does put Mo’s lame duck inactivity on the back burner.
If something above is inaccurate plz point it out. Was it a decision to botch? Write that book and I’ll buy a hardback copy.
Yes, I am guilty of using the word when it has not been proven. I shouldn’t feed those who always assume the worst. I spent some time during WWU weekend trying to get to the bottom of who said what when, but the few people who really know the truth may never share it.
A very interesting potential twist on the story… It could increase Arenado’s market by one team.

Isn’t it an indication of his character that he won’t even fly in to sign autographs for 2 hours for the Cardinals charity? He pulled the same stunt in 2024.
If the Cubs end up with both Bregman and Tucker…good grief.
Astros and Cubs are believed showing significant interest in Alex Bregman, with Tigers and Red Sox among others involved. His longtime Astros team, also engaged at the start of winter, want him enough they may move Paredes to 2B and Altuve to LF to accommodate.

Under the stay scenario, reduce his PA’s vs lefties by half or more until the deadline. If he repeats his 24′, it should help his overall trade value by the deadline.
Nado’s past two seasons he has had 299 PA’s vs lhp’s. So he gets 150 PA’s a season vs lh, and 100 pa’s by each deadline, if you will.
100 PA’s over 100+ games reduced by 50% is 50 PA’s less by the deadline, say 10 GS. Start to platoon him vs lefties. Play him as much as possible vs righties and hope it improves his overall.
We sat too many lefties last season and gave Nado the PA’s. It’s a backward platoon, but Gorman at 3B vs lefties would be an option for those 50 PA’s, if we hope to develop him as an everyday player.
Arenado’s .276 & .266 OBP (vs lh), over these 299 PA’s, needs addressed, as a seller.
And what is everybody going to think late this season when Arenado is hitting about .290 with 30 homeruns and 100 rbi’s and is in the MVP conversation? And the Cardinals are in the hunt for a playoff spot?

I think he will come back some in 2025 and has one or two more good seasons left. It seems like he was a bit handicapped last year, although honestly I do not know for sure.
I saw a game in Pittsburgh and watched the guys in pre-game warmups, and Nado was really stretching and seemed to be making sure he was limber enough for the game. He homered that night, off of Paul Skenes no less and we won 2-1, so a big hit. But he did not look real comfortable a lot of the time.
He and Albert Pujols have (had) the most balanced stance of any Cardinal I have seen over the last 20 years or so. I think the tools are still there for Nado, but whether the body is still strong and limber enough, and the reflexes sharp enough to get on top of a 98 MPH fastball, or recognize that a pitch is going to be out of the zone remains to be seen.
He never got untracked at all last season. Some suspected he was suffering from bad grease fittings in his back and I also recall he was victimized by a HBP that got him pretty good in the wrist area of his left arm. In any case, like you mentioned, there’s no reason to completely discount a solid comeback performance in ’25 if he’s motivated and healthy.

In other news, who had the Mavs trading Luka Doncic on their bingo card or the trade taking less than a week to consummate? It just goes to show you can accomplish anything when truly motivated to do so.
Back to the boring winter that is the St. Louis Cardinals do nothing approach to “retooling” their system.
Bill spent 100mil on pitching contracts last winter. He’s done a 180° since. Shut the spicket off and people notice.
I really don’t have a problem with the Cardinals not spending money this winter because Mo does not have a good history of spending money. What I have a problem with is that they have made no trades to acquire prospects to upgrade the farm system with. That is usually what a rebuilding team does. All the Cardinals have done this winter is not renew some expiring contracts and hire some player development staff. Hopefully the hires will bare some fruit at some point.
Fedde and Helsey we could guess are being kept for gate purposes until near deadline, and eventually will bring a prospect return. Who else should Mo be trading for prospects?
On the other hand, keeping Helsley, Fedde, and Matz could have a profound benefit. Everyone is preparing with the intention of improving g. There are no guarantees either way. Matz is due for some good fortune in a walk year. Fedde could be our number two legitimately with some good fortune. There aren’t many better than Helsley and Bloom may very well invest in him as closer or starter.
If the team surprises, every single one of these expendable assets will play an essential role in the team’s success. It seems a shame to add minor league depth at the cost of giving up before we start.I hope this problem with Arenado doesn’t turn into a season long side show. It’s hard to understand how a guy guaranteed to get $74M for playing baseball feels like he can’t be happy playing for a team like the
Astros. This guy is a head case if there ever was one. And it’s remarkable that he could think that the fans are stupid enough to believe that the reason why he stopped hitting the way he used to is because ‘the pitchers got better’.
