CBS sports says, “The Cardinals headed into the offseason ready to deal third baseman Nolan Arenado and had reportedly agreed on a deal to Houston, but Arenado vetoed that with his no-trade clause rights. Things on the Arenado trade front right now are “quiet,” president of baseball operations John Mozeliak admitted on the radio last week. Per The Athletic, “multiple league sources indicate the Red Sox represent Arenado’s last chance to get dealt before the 2025 season.”

I don’t know if that’s true. The last three years of Bregman’s deal, a team is going to be paying $90+ million. The last three years of an Arenado deal, a team will likely only be paying $49 million (assuming the Cardinals eat $5 million per year).
So, the coming year, do you expect Bregman to be $8+ million better than Arenado? Probably.
But what about in 2027 when Arenado will cost his new team $10 million and Bregman will cost his new team $30+ million?
How is Bregman’s contract going to age when you don’t have two teams paying down 1/3 of the contract?
That’s why the Cardinals need to get busy shopping Arenado and stop waiting on Bregman.

I think it is just as much Arenado who is waiting, hoping that the Bregman losers move to him.
Isn’t what you are really saying that the Cardinals need to come down off their current asking price and eat more money to try to move Arenado?
The world knows the financial terms Houston and St. Louis accepted, but apparently no one else is willing to pay that, or they would have called the Cardinals. At least no place where Arenado wants to play.
It is a cat and mouse game because other teams know that, expecting the Cardinals (and Arenado) to get more desperate as spring camp approaches.
I think the Cardinals and Arenado have done waaayyyy to much talking in the press, and not enough with each other and other teams.
When the Cardinals and Arenado decided on trading him, they should have agreed to what teams he would be traded and under what conditions, and as soon as something changes (like Kyle Tucker being traded from Houston), they should have been talking to each other.
Here’s how the Cardinals handled it:
– The Yankees reportedly floated the idea of Stroman for Arenado, the Cardinals shut down talks
– Then the Cardinals leaked how absurd the idea was, so much so that they didn’t even take it to ArenadoNow, how do you restart talks with the Yankees after that fiasco?
Here’s how Arenado handled it:
– He leaked six teams he would accept to which he would accept trades to the press
– He publicly pined for the Dodgers
– He said the Dodgers would have to tell him no to his face after they publicly stated they weren’t interested
– Now, he leaks that he would accept a trade to the Red SoxThey are worse than children on the schoolyard.
If Arenado and the Cardinals are communicating, why does he have to leak his preferences to the press?
This has to be one of the most poorly handled trades in history.
But to answer your question, yes, I think the Cardinals are waiting.
They keep saying things have gone silent since Arenado refused the trade to Houston. Pick up the phone and call the teams to which Arenado will accept a trade! Don’t wait for them to call you!
Quite honestly, if I was a GM of another team, and I saw how the Cardinals handled the Yankees and Astros talks, and how Arenado has conducted himself in the press, I would not be approaching the Cardinals.
Let them come to me. And I am going to take them to the cleaners in negotiations.

I hope the Cardinals keep Arenado. If he has a bounce back year I think they have a chance to win the NL Central.

Good synopsis LA. This has been bungled every which way possible. The fact that Mo spent so much time and effort putting the Astro trade together without even knowing that Arenado would accept was a collosal waste of time. Amateur hour.
Katie Woo posted a new article about Arenado, but there is really nothing new beyond what has been discussed here.

Tell that to Bill DeWitt’s accountant. They desperately want to get rid of Arenado’s salary. Mo even was recently quoted as saying “If there is no trade he will have to be a part of the team.” Not exactly a ringing endorsement. If Arenado stays it won’t be because the Cardinals want him and you can bet they will be trying to offload him again at the deadline.
Brian, I think that is the same Katie Woo article I posted yesterday. It has the same quote from Mo stating “he (Arenado) will have to be part of the team” if there is no trade. I chuckle every time I read that quote.

With so much ballyhoo about Arenado being traded, this is primed and teed up to be a classic “sometimes the best deals are the ones you don’t make” scenario.
I am sure that many folks hope that is correct. Since the media has been quiet and Mo said nothing was happening four days ago, it makes sense.

Probably he’s realizing that his market isn’t anywhere near what he thought it would be. I do believe that he’ll be a useful starter next year and may even bounce back with the bat a little bit…but he’s being paid like an elite player.

Yes I think that is the case. Too bad for him because the Astros ballpark is a much better hitting park than Detroit. Not sure about Seattle.

After the Astros traded Kyle Tucker, I can understand. He cannot carry the Astros. Mariners are trying to add pieces (though they’ve done nothing yet this offseason) and are on the upswing.
Maybe we can do a three-team trade with the Mariners sending Castillo to a third team, Cardinals sending Arenado + Fedde to Seattle, and the Cardinals receiving prospects.
So, according to that Morosi video, Arenado only broadened his horizons within the last 24 hours.

This was something I saw earlier today:
Other contending teams whose third basemen fared poorly last year include the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals. Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat posted on Twitter/X that the Royals checked in with the Cardinals at the Winter Meetings regarding Nolan Arenado, but the Cardinals were under the impression that Nado wouldn’t waive his no-trade clause to move across the state. Therefore, the discussion was stalled there.
