All of a sudden, a lot of chatter about the possibility of Arenado to Boston
I also saw they are now in on acquiring a high leverage RP. Seems to flip floppy to me. Make a plan and stick with that plan.
I agree about the flip-flop part.
I know Chris Cotillo from Mass Live personally and he is a credible source.
I don’t know this anonymous Cardinals Live guy, but he puts out a lot of rumor stuff. Does he get it from inside sources or does he read everyone else? I recall him saying several times before the holidays that an Arenado deal was close. Because rumors are not fact, they can be and are often wrong. The only time they seem to be remembered is when they are right. Some seem to follow him very closely but others are far less positive. Maybe some of you pay more attention to this than I do and can offer more insight.
I just posted the Cardinals Live because Chris Cotillo acknowledged them.
But there is a lot of fan reaction in Boston right now due to Cotillo.
A Story Arenado reunion on the left hand side of the infield in Boston? Arenado would actually fair well in Boston with his very pull heavy approach and would bang plenty of doubles off the Green Monster. I don’t put much weight in the rumor for now though.
The part of Arenado would accept a move to Boston seems more like Arenado’s team leaking it.
And, yes, one reason Arenado may prefer Boston is to get his numbers up. His pull-heavy approach plays better in Boston than New York.
I just posted this because Boston fans are reacting to it and it was mentioned on two Boston media sites.
With Arenado’s Cardinal career likely to be finished, I checked to see where he stands all-time among third basemen with our club. Turns out he just passed up Terry Pendleton for the number 6 spot in 2024, based on bWAR. Here are the rankings, with their bWAR as Cardinals:
Ken Boyer 58.1 (also an MVP – should have been elected to the Hall this year)
Scott Rolen 25.9
Whitey Kurowski 24.6
Joe Torre 22.5 (also played first base and catcher – some of his value is at those spots)
Pepper Martin 21.9
Nolan Arenado 16.6One thing to note – Arenado has played with us only in his age 30 and above years. The other guys on the list all spent some time in their prime seasons as Cardinals. Boyer, Kurowski, and Martin spent all of their prime seasons as Cardinals.
We have gotten a lot more production from him than we gave up. It will be interesting to see how things go with the players we get once a deal is finalized.
Boston would probably be a good trading partner for the Cardinals since Bloom knows their minor league system very well. Of course if the Cardinals don’t eat much of the Arenado contract they aren’t going to get much of a return.
Nado and Goldy would be on bitter rival teams all of a sudden.
I wouldn’t have guessed that Boyer would hold such a commanding lead over the rest of the field at 3B. I’m also a little surprised that Oberkfell isn’t somewhere near the top…

True, but considering Arenado’s diminished value, this is really about moving salary. The return will probably not knock our socks off.
I think 1TD’s comment about being surprised how much more value Boyer had for us than other third basemen is reflective of his lack of support in the recent Hall of Fame vote. He was much better than people think he was, but was not a guy that wowed you like a Dick Allen or Dave Parker. He just did the job day in and day out for many years.
Obie has 17.1 bWAR as a Cardinal and is a good one to bring up. About 10 of that was as a third baseman. Torre played elsewhere as well as I mentioned, but his peak years with us were at third, including his MVP season of 1971 when he played third exclusively.
I’d have to say Boyer possessed way more wow factor than Allen. As for Dave Parker, in my estimation Parker was the best baseball player in either league for several years. And yeah, I’ll maintain that if Santo’s in there, Boyer’s name should without question be right next to, or on top of, the Cub’s 3B’man. And if it were up to me, Obie would be in there…Haha!
And Oberkfell may have played some seasons at 2B, but he didn’t play over there on the right side of the IF when it counted in ’82. By that time another guy had staked out the keystone position and he would have undoubtedly collected a few GG’s to match his goldilocks if it weren’t for a guy named Sandberg. In my estimation Oberkfell, Smith, Herr and Hernandez were the best Redbird defensive IF of my lifetime. Those four mitts were non-porous on rugs or grass.

One quote from Mo:
“The update would be it’s been very quiet,” Mozeliak said in a recent interview on KMOX regarding Arenado’s market. “If we have the ability to find him a place he desires, it’s something we are going to try to do. If not, he will have to be a part of our club moving forward.”
“He will have to be a part of the club.” Mo doesn’t sound excited about the possibility of Nado staying.
