Once again you are assuming that winning games is the highest priority in 2025. I don’t think it is.
With Gorman at third, Contreras at first, and Walker in RF – that seems like at least 2 to 3 extra base runners per game.
I don’t think any of our pitchers are going to like that. They won’t say anything publicly of course – but you have think they are groaning on the inside.
Throw Burleson into the OF on top of those three and – wow, that might be (on paper) the worst defense the Cardinals have ever fielded.

Gorman and Contrares are good baseball players who have been exceptionally good infielder their entire lives. To assume they will be liabilities is premature. Bryce Harper made the switch to first flawlessly, and Contrares may do the same.
At some point kids stop improving, but to declare Walker will remain the inept boob he was two years ago seems silly.Is the above as bad as I’m making it out to be or am I overblowing it?
We did see signs that Walker improved his defense in the outfield last year.
Gorman’s defensive profile might actually play better at third than second.
From the sounds of things, Contreras really wants to be a good 1B and will put in the effort to become one.
So, yes, it might be overblowing things. I don’t expect the outfield to be anywhere as bad as it was in 2023.
I just hope somebody can come to the realization Burleson is not an outfielder (or the Cardinals trade him to prevent the manager from putting him in the outfield).

Agreed. Blown saves have a devastating effect on club morale. This is particularly true for starting pitchers, but really the team can go in funk with only a couple blown saves.
It is also tough on fans. Who wants to sit in stands, getting your hopes up for 8 innings, only to have your hopes dashed at the finish?One reason I think the Cardinals need to be proactive in trading Arenado by listening to offers on all their players they are seeking to trade simultaneously is that Bregman is represented by Boras.
It’s clear Bregman is not getting the offers he wants, and Boras has a history of slow-walking things into spring training.
The Cardinals should be looking for ways to move Arenado without waiting for Bregman to sign.
HaHa OK, he looked OK in A level, so what could go wrong. I imagine the FO thinking the same thing. I also imagine they think miracles will happen with Herrera’s arm and Walker in RF. It all works great on paper, like Contreras playing 1B every day trying to snag air mails and worm burners.

I agree. Bregman might not sign for several weeks. The Cardinals had a deal with Houston but Arenado nixed it. He may regret that decision.
I don’t think he’ll regret it, he knows he can’t carry a team anymore. I still expect him to get traded.
But I don’t think the Cardinals can wait for Bregman to sign. I think they have to be willing to look at deals that are not straight salary dumps.
The same teams that are saying the Cardinals need to pay down Arenado’s contract have to be looking at the last 3-4 years of Bregman’s deal and saying “no way do we want that.”
In this story from MLB.com two days ago, teams potentially interested in Bregman are Yankees, Tigers, Mets and Red Sox. Plus Phillies if they move Bohm, but that might take one of the prior four teams out of the running for Bregman. All five made the playoffs in 2024 except Boston.
They would be a good starting guess as to teams that might be interested in Arenado if they don’t get Bregman. Or they might not. No one knows for sure.

FWIW, on KMOX this morning, Mozeliak said talks for Arenado are quiet. He said they have already made cuts for 2025 and he made no suggestion he would have to make other moves to save more money if Arenado is not traded. He acknowledged that Arenado may be with the team in 2025.
A week ago reports were to continue slashing. This week its we’re fine 😀

He supposedly wants to play for a true contender. So much so that he thought Houston wasn’t good enough, which is laughable. If he gets stuck on a 70 or 75 win Cardinal team then the joke is on him.
Since playing the youth is the objective, then why play Arenado every day if he is here? Why should trying Gorman at third be shelved if NA is here?

Theoretically yes – you would play Gorman at least some of the time to get a look at the future. Historically though the Cardinals play the guys who are on long term contracts.
Even after Edmundo Sosa beat out Paul DeJong for the shortstop position in the second half of 2021, by the next Spring DeJong was the starter because he was the one that was getting paid more.
Sometimes I wonder if our front office is too vocal about team plans to other teams and the public. Mo and co talk a whole lot but without a lot of action and instead they make wish washy statements. Teams like Atlanta play it very close to the and you hear of a move when it actually happens. I realize journalists like this for content, but I would rather not hear of a few months of Arenado rumors and instead either just see he is traded when it happens or not hear anything if he isn’t traded.

I know they have always played the money, and they also don’t want to disrespect guys, but they made their plans known, and Mo did give NA a ticket out, which he declined. It seems like it would be reasonable to proceed with the plan, at least sharing out time at 3B.
I wonder if part of the over sharing is seeing the publics reaction to gauge 25 season tickets sales. I’m guessing they were underwhelmed by the lack of tickets sold and have decided to change course? I also saw they are now in on acquiring a high leverage RP. Seems to flip floppy to me. Make a plan and stick with that plan. Don’t try to do 3 things at once as you will not succeed at any of those goals.
