I didn’t write it. Would you prefer we don’t copy and paste links?
December 23, 2024 at 8:16 am #273753Not at all. It just seemed to be a rehash of other news reports. Was there something notably new in there? If so, maybe point out what that is…

I hadn’t read any quotes from Max Muncy indicating his willingness to move off third. I find that pretty important. I hadn’t read anything but random made up trade ideas from random internet guys. This was coming from John Denton and the Dodgers fanpage guy. I find that to be somewhat more credible. Frankly everything else out there had been either negative or completely dismissive of the trade. This wasn’t that. Glad I could help.
December 23, 2024 at 8:45 am #273760OK, I get it. Thanks for clarifying. Not surprisingly, Muncy hopes to stay in LA and not be traded away. He probably read the rumors that he might be the one to go if Arenado comes in.
There is another angle not mentioned. The Dodgers want Teoscar Hernandez back, but the negotiations reportedly haven’t been proceeding. I wonder if they would move Muncy to the OF instead of resigning Hernandez and bring in Arenado.
Clearly, Arenado is holding out for a better deal for him than Houston.

jj-cf-stlParticipantLux out, Muncy to 2B, acquire a corner OF, is a better fit.
December 23, 2024 at 8:58 am #273763At this point I think Arenado will (eventually) get traded before spring training.
If that somehow doesn’t happen then certainly before the trade deadline.
If he ends up hanging around StL I’d bet the locker room dynamic will be a bit funky but I also bet he’d be laser focused on producing so that outside interest will be as high as possible.
December 23, 2024 at 9:00 am #273764Lux out, Muncy to 2B, acquire a corner OF, is a better fit.
Not really. Lux can play SS, Arenado cannot.
Lux also makes one-tenth the salary of Arenado.

jj-cf-stlParticipantMuncy to the outfield to avoid costs? Nah, it’s the Dodgers.
Betts and Edman can play a little short too.December 23, 2024 at 10:30 am #273773The main point is Arenado makes 10X more money, was marginally better than Lux in 2024 and is in his decline phase.
Lux offers similar production and is entering his prime (he is 27).
People act like the Dodgers foolishly waste money. They don’t. They maximize their on-field production given their budgets. Their budgets are just 2X what the Cardinals used to run.

jj-cf-stlParticipantI could add Burly to sweeten the deal for you 😉

I didn’t mean to suggest that the Dodgers would be avoiding costs by paying Arenado instead of Teoscar, who is estimated to be in line for $22-24 MM per year for three years. I just wondered if Arenado might be a Plan B for them if they can’t get Hernandez done. I saw another article today suggesting LA might go after Seiya Suzuki from the Cubs instead…
December 23, 2024 at 11:08 am #273778
jj-cf-stlParticipantI got that, to replace the production loss in LF. The cost reasoning of LACardFan is not wrong, but I’m working on that. TBD.

jj-cf-stlParticipantArenado & Helsley
for
Miguel Rojas & MillerLA keeps their 3rd SS in Lux, saves almost another 2mil by sending Rojas instead.
December 23, 2024 at 11:27 am #273781The Dodgers move a lot of players around but the best I can tell right now they are looking at:
DH- Ohtani
1B- Freeman
2B- Lux
SS- Betts
3B- Muncy
LF- Pages/Taylor
CF- Edman
RF- ConfortoThey could sign Harnandez or trade for Suzuki to shore up the OF or they could trade Lux or Muncy to make room for Nado. It has been suggested that the Cardinals would have to take Taylor back in a deal but what about Muncy?
December 23, 2024 at 11:43 am #273783
jj-cf-stlParticipantTaylor and Muncy (and Stroman) have salaries well over the 5mil Bill prefers to eat this season. Reports on Stroman stressed the lack of salary relief for 2025.
December 23, 2024 at 11:59 am #273785The Cardinals were willing to send $15M to Houston but spread out over three years. That same $15M would cover most of Taylor or Muncy but it would be all in one year. Pay me now or pay me later. Rip the band aid off now.
December 23, 2024 at 12:08 pm #273787
jj-cf-stlParticipantHe may pivot to that, if he doesn’t find a HOU deal again.
December 23, 2024 at 2:53 pm #273794If I were the Dodgers, no way I am touching Arenado’s salary for a 0.4 WAR upgrade on a player who is declining rapidly unless the Cardinals are sending back Nootbaar or Donovan (you know, actually addressing the Dodgers needs).
December 23, 2024 at 3:12 pm #273795Areando is the one desperate to play for the Dodgers.
Maybe the Dodgers should ask him if he is willing to play in the outfield.
Last time Muncy played in the outfield was 2018.

????Its your thread, run with it.
December 23, 2024 at 3:18 pm #273797Not really. Lux can play SS, Arenado cannot.
Arenado might play SS as well as Lux. If Lux could play SS they wouldn’t be moving Betts there next season. They still have Rojas. Edman is a better SS than Lux. Lux is, at best, 4th in line to play SS. Their #3 prospect is a SS who was at AAA last season and good enough he’ll stick at SS. Lux doesn’t grade out well in the metrics and his double play turning ability is sub par. I could see them trying to move Lux to LF or pushed out of LA quickly. They could easily use Muncy at 2B and late game situations Rojas comes in or Edman shifts from CF to 2B and Outman or whoever plays CF. I’m not saying this is the route they go, Muncy hasn’t played 2B since 2022, but his metrics at 2B are similar to Lux, so it’s not out of the question at all.
With all that though, while I would like to see something like Arenado and Romero to LA and the Cardinals getting Taylor, Brasier, 2 pitching prospects. I think he’s much more likely SD or NYY bound if they can ever get it done. The problem is going to be the money and the Cardinals are going to have to eat part of it and why I liked the LAD scenario more of taking on the $17 million of the 2 players to not eat any of Arenado.
All of this is just a shame though, because they had a goal in mind of resetting and 2026 Bloom taking over with a much cleaner slate and seemed to be in a pretty good postion to make it happen. But now its apprearing more and more like nothing is going to happen and they hope Helsley and Fedde can stay healthy enough to trade for something at the deadline as all the fan’s still can’t realize why the team plays .500 ball with a so-so minor league system and stuck behind all these teams for more years to come. People say they want to see them win, but want to hold on to bloated contracts holding them back. If you want to see them win the “resetting” for 2 years and see where they are in 2027 seems like a much better option to me than the route they appear headed in yet again.
December 23, 2024 at 4:56 pm #273802Let’s recap:
Arenado is 33, makes $27 million, was worth 2.5 WAR last year, is declining rapidly, and has said the Dodgers need to tell him to his face they don’t want him, after they publicly stated they are not interested.Max Muncy is 34, makes $14.5 million, was worth 3.0 WAR last year, and has helped the Dodgers win two World Series.
Gavin Lux is 27, makes less than $3 million, was worth 2.1 WAR last year, and has helped the Dodgers win two world series.
But everybody thinks the Dodgers need to make room for Arenado, who is upsetting the team chemistry of the World Series champions?
December 23, 2024 at 5:05 pm #273803I have said it before and I’ll say it again. I hope we do NOT trade Arenado. And Helsley for that matter.
The NL Central is a weak division. 87 wins might be enough. If some of these players we have been counting on come around in 2025, Arenado happens to rebound, and some of these young pitchers come around we might be able to steal the division. When I say young players and pitchers I am referring to:
Walker
Gorman
McGreevey
Hence
Matthews
Graceffo
NootbaarThrow in possible solid years from Arenado, Winn, Burleson, Contreras and wala – NL Central champs!
And yes, I now I am hoping for a lot.

December 23, 2024 at 5:11 pm #273805Well, as Red said back in his Shawshank days, hope is a dangerous thing.
But it can be fun and perhaps keep you warm at night.
December 23, 2024 at 5:49 pm #273806
jj-cf-stlParticipantLol, who cares what the Dodgers think or win? Or NY, or Diego? We’ve used this ATM before, recently.
