Nobody is going to bail Bill out on that contract unless something juicy comes along with it. Juicy as in not just a dried up singles slapper who used to be a gold glove.
December 23, 2024 at 6:24 pm #273808Arenado & Nootbaar
for
????If I were the Dodgers, and I was actually willing to take Arenado after this public fiasco (I would not be willing to do so), the trade would be Arenado + Donovan (Dodgers value versatility, and Donovan won a gold glove as a utility player) for three prospects outside of 10 designated by the Dodgers as untouchable.
Cardinals clear $31 million and get three prospects.
Arenado gets to join the Dodgers as a backup 1B/2B/3B.
Dodgers get an outfielder and a malcontent who is on thin ice.
He who has the gold makes the rules!!!
December 23, 2024 at 9:01 pm #273812I have said it before and I’ll say it again. I hope we do NOT trade Arenado. And Helsley for that matter.
Hey Rat, ‘ole buddy, ‘ole pal. If you get down to ‘da Lou some time, look me up ’cause I’d like buy you a couple of brews. I even know a place where you can light up one of your stogies and no one will complain.

jj-cf-stlParticipantThanks LACF, looks reasonable to me. Donovan is an arb guy now, like Bader, O’Neill, Edman, etc., and a short timer w/StL now, if our arb trade history continues.
Feinstein has Bergman going to DET or BOS eventually, two teams I’d bet Arenado wont agree to.
My dark horse is Anaheim. As a last option, it would get Nado to SoCal.December 24, 2024 at 7:20 am #273820FWIW, Boston IS one of the six teams on Arenado’s original list.
December 24, 2024 at 7:45 am #273821
jj-cf-stlParticipantYep. He’s already chose to stay once 😉
December 24, 2024 at 10:05 am #273831Does keeping Arenado really help us win the NLC? If he stays then you can be 99% sure that other payroll will be purged which probably includes Fedde, Helsley, and others. In reality it doesn’t matter. We aren’t winning hte NLC with or without Arenado and in case the memo got lost, THE CARDINALS ARE NOT TRYING TO WIN IN 2025. THEY ARE ONLY CONCERNED ABOUT CUTTING PAYROLL.
The Cubs, Brewers, and Reds will duke it out for the2025 NLC title while the Cards and Pirates dream about brighter days.
Besides, after reading this board the last three seasons, I have been told that Ollie Marmol is the worst manager in the history of MLB so how could the Cardinals win the division with him at the helm while gutting payroll at the same time? That would be quite the feat.
December 24, 2024 at 10:15 am #273832Matthew Trueblood, Baseball Prospectus: “Arenado having a no-trade clause worked for the Cardinals back when he was lobbying to escape Colorado. He wanted to win, and only trusted a certain set of franchises to do that even with him on board, and the Cardinals were by far the most interested of those franchises. It’s part of how they got such a gallingly good price on him, not only giving up little talent but compelling the Rockies to pay down some of a deal that was not really out of line for the market at that time. They got a double dose of the good medicine a few years later, too, when Arenado opted into the final five years of his deal, despite having been well-positioned to (if nothing else) extract more from the Cardinals. Alas: none of the winning Arenado and the Cardinals really envisioned doing together ever materialized, and now his control of the process is officially becoming a problem for St. Louis. He wants out if they’re not going to push hard to win in 2025, and since they unequivocally aren’t, president of baseball operations John Mozeliak is doing his utmost to move his erstwhile third baseman. They’re running into walls everywhere, though, and while Arenado turning down the Astros is the latest setback, there’s a more overarching one to face, too: His trade value has absolutely cratered.”

Does Arenado help them win? We’ve seen the last two years the answer is no.
Fedde & Helsley are (most likely) going to be gone anyway. It is foolish to keep guys on expiring deals in a year in which you have no intention of competing.
The only real question is will the Cardinals be successful in offloading Matz’ contract.
December 24, 2024 at 11:08 am #273838Agreed LA. 2025 is a rebuilding year. We aren’t winning squat.
December 27, 2024 at 2:06 pm #273949When does everybody anticipate a move being made with regards to Arenado?
Assume we are currently in the holiday down time and shouldn’t expect much in the way of news for another ten days or so.
December 27, 2024 at 2:27 pm #273950
jj-cf-stlParticipantBergman wants too much for too long, and Arenado is a luke warm plan B. Not a hot corner of the market currently.
December 27, 2024 at 3:07 pm #273951Arenado plus his contract is not a hot commodity whatever the unrealistic dreamers try to tell us. He will likely have to be moved along with something somebody wants. Hopefully that will not be a young piece, which leaves Helsley’s arm or Contreras’s bat. I think there are still arms and bats out there that do not require taking on Arenado’s contract, so I don’t look for anything to heat up any time real soon. Bill is smart enough not to let Mo trade away anything good without unloading that bad contract, so I don’t see too much happening for a while.
December 27, 2024 at 3:19 pm #273952Bill’s a year older and a year smarter than the sitting President…
December 27, 2024 at 3:38 pm #273953When does everybody anticipate a move being made with regards to Arenado?
Probably a week or two after Bregman signs somewhere whenever that is.
Just for fun what would things look like if Arenado stayed in STL? First of all it wouldn’t be that the Cardinals changed their mind and wanted him to stay although that is how they would try to spin it. It would actually be becuse they couldn’t find a suitable deal or a team he would agree to.
But what about the STL roster if he stayed? Mo would still be under orders to trim more payroll. Fedde and Helsley should be easy enough to move. Matz could only be moved if the Cards chipped in with cash or bundled him with another player. They could bundle Matz and Gorman or they could bundle Matz and Noot while moving Donovan to LF and Gorman to 2B. Lots of different scenarios.
The best move would just be to trade Nado.
December 27, 2024 at 3:48 pm #273954
jj-cf-stlParticipantFedde is at bat. Matz is on deck. Arenado is in the hole.
December 27, 2024 at 4:51 pm #273958From a strictly baseball point of view, Arenado sticking around for another year would not be the worst thing that could happen. It would certainly give ownership a severe case of the hips but at least the team would have a competent third baseman.
December 27, 2024 at 7:09 pm #273960If Nado is moving he’s going to move shortly after Bregman is signed.
Again people think that we have gash payroll if he’s still around. We already got rid of Goldschmidt via FA and declined options on Gibson and Lynn. That’s over 40 million right there they freed up.
December 27, 2024 at 7:24 pm #273961Bill is smart
Bill is rich. Ruining the fanbase indicates Bill isn’t really smart.
December 27, 2024 at 7:57 pm #273962This does not help Arenado’s hopes of going to the Dodgers.
Translation: Source: Teóscar Hernández and the Los Angeles Dodgers are finalizing a three-year, $66 million guaranteed deal. Congratulations to the Dominican.

Felicidades para el dominicano.— Yancen Pujols (@YancenPujols) December 27, 2024
December 27, 2024 at 8:28 pm #273963It tanks whatever slim chances Arenado had of going to the Dodgers.
Hernandez is getting $66 million, with $23 million of that deferred for luxury tax purposes. Dodgers have already reached the highest tax threshold, which means everything is taxed at 110%.
If you think it’s hard to find a taker for Arenado’s $27 million, imagine paying $57 million for him.
December 28, 2024 at 8:02 am #273969
jj-cf-stlParticipant110% tax? and the LAD keep on signing players like it doesn’t even matter.
December 28, 2024 at 8:16 am #273970Teoscar’s $66 MM is only the ninth-largest contract on the current Dodgers. Of the top nine, only one of them was homegrown (Will Smith). Four were free agents (all in the top five $$), with the other four trade and extend acquisitions (including Edman).
Any similarities with the Cardinals are completely dwarfed by the huge amounts of money being spent on outside developed talent. If you spend enough, you can win the World Series.
December 28, 2024 at 8:44 am #273972
jj-cf-stlParticipantAt one point the last three teams still active in the 2024 postseason ranked one, two and three in highest player budget.
The low end budgets overachieving, are fun in a novelty kind of way.December 28, 2024 at 8:53 am #273973Any similarities with the Cardinals are completely dwarfed by the huge amounts of money being spent on outside developed talent.
Yes, the Dodgers are trying to win a World Series, and the Cardinals are trying to collect a $70 million welfare check from MLB.
