People make way too much of this.
Wong gets benched when he doesn’t hit. Fowler gets benched when he doesn’t hit. Not too tough to surmise.

So should players be benched when their defense is not good? Or is hitting the only measure by which players should be benched?

Depends on how the team is doing and what it needs. If the team is in an offensive slump, you play some players whose forte is their bat.

Hmmm…To answer your question, we should just abolish one way players from the team. No more offense-only players, no more defense only players…

If there’s a decent left handed pitcher going against you, it might be a good idea to play a decent right handed hitter at 2B.
Just SOP stuff for a lot of managers.

Matheny, Mabry and Mueler have been fired.

Wow. I am totally surprised. I think it is the right move.

The Reds announcers, Welsh and Brennaman, were talking on the broadcast today that Matheny was really feeling the heat.

Sort of a shame, really. The players don’t perform and its the manager that gets fired. But like Herzog used to say……Managers are hired to be fired.

    Whoa, I am shocked!!!

Panic move? I don’t know, but it appears that management feels the players lack of playing to their ability is largely due to the on field staff.

Or this is the front office’s big attempt to just fix everything with a new manager rather than actually trade players…let’s hope that the firings are not all that the team is doing…

I would not trade low on these guys. Obviously there was a big rift between Matheny and some players, widely suspected to be Fowler and Pham, and maybe others.

Let’s see how things go the rest of the way.

My guess is you are going to see a win tomorrow, bccran. I did not think so a half-hour ago.

That is the bottom line for me – creating hope again.

I am very surprised the change was made now, but not because I did not think it was warranted. I bet most feel that way.

I give DeWitt Jr. credit for stepping up to an obvious problem and do not consider him a lunatic. He made what he believes is the best decision for his team. Too bad you cannot accept that.

Needed to happen. And with the crap coming out this week sounds like MM wasn’t as good of a clubhouse manager and was made out to be.

Management must feel that a lack of leadership in the clubhouse has a lot to do with the dysfunction on the ball club. And that dysfunction is impacting the results on the field.

Management could be wrong of course, but they obviously feel this is the way to go. It’s got to be pretty bad to make a move in-season, and on a club that is still over .500 (although trending downward).

Bill DeWitt is the furthest thing I know from being a lunatic. But it’s a shame to see players like Fowler, Pham, Wong, Holland, Gregerson, etc. cause a good man to lose his job.

While MM might be a good man he isn’t a good manager.

Matheny lost his job because he wasn’t a very good manager.

Mabry had stayed far to long, far to long. Great move from the front office, it was long over due. Now they need to go out and get what this team needs to get over the hump.

I think Matheny is a class act, but obviously it wasn’t working this year. Sometimes you gotta make a change, and good people end up taking the fall. Happens in the business world all the time.

Mike I think he is a class act too, but NOT a good major league manager.
