Ortiz really wants him, but does not speculate on a combination of prospects that would get him here.
Bottom line, you need to make a guess at the future ROI with and without Machado. In acquiring him, you definitely boost the chances of a World Championship, which is a huge return. But then you also take on a lot of risk, since most likely he’s a 75%-of-a-season rental.
Ideally we send a couple of top prospects, and can also dump Carpenter on them rather than Martinez as Ortiz mentions. But that is not going to happen as it will likely take three solid prospects, and maybe a fourth lower level guy.
May 11, 2018 at 2:40 pm #51749That sounds too rich to me, Mike, for 3/4 of a season of Machado and no draft pick comp. The Cards just gave exactly what you said – three solid prospects and a fourth lower level guy – for two years of Ozuna plus a draft pick if he walks.
May 11, 2018 at 3:17 pm #51750The Machado deal is more palatable if the Orioles would take a contract off our hands. Perhaps if they took Fowler, Carpenter, Wong, or Cecil in the deal it might work. Not really saying we should trade Wong, but that would open up a spot for Munoz or Schrock to play with the big club. To me, the Orioles have to either eat a salary or open up a window for the Cards to negociate a deal with Machados agent.
May 11, 2018 at 4:35 pm #51758Why would the Orioles take on a big contract in a Machado trade? There will be plenty of suitors out there that won’t require that.
May 14, 2018 at 10:38 pm #52361May 15, 2018 at 9:49 am #52401I’m sure he will blast many at Wrigley later this Summer.
May 16, 2018 at 3:02 pm #52664After the Robinson Cano surprise yesterday, you’d have to be really skeptical about giving any player a 10-13 year contract.
May 16, 2018 at 3:16 pm #52665That may be an issue this winter but not this July.
May 16, 2018 at 8:01 pm #52685The Robinson Cano scandal just lessens what you would be willing to give up for a Machado rental, IMO. You never know what’s you’re really getting. Who would have thought Cano was using PED’s? Now you have to believe that all of his stats are tainted. A really big question that emerges from all of this is ‘Why did it take MLB this long to catch him?’ PED’s were already supposed to be out of the game for several years.

ParticipantMud… I was thinking the same thing. Does testing work? Was he “caught” because he has been injured? WTF.
May 17, 2018 at 9:13 am #52716The cheaters find ways to try to stay ahead of the testers. Cano was caught using a masking agent during an off-season test. It took this long for the process to play out.

ParticipantI don’t understand why Cano was using at all. He already got his big contract. Now he just cost himself $11.3M. That’s incredibly stupid.
May 17, 2018 at 9:32 am #52720Nothing new. Why did A-Rod keep using after receiving the largest contract in MLB history? Why did Barry Bonds start using after winning two MVP awards? Why did Big Mac start after hitting 49 homers as a slender rookie? etc…
If you are good, you want to be great. And if you are great, you want to be the greatest. Look for the edge where you can find it.
May 17, 2018 at 9:44 am #52724I just don’t think the Cano situation is going to impact Machado. He has never been suspected of that as far as I know plus trading for him for two months isn’t much of a risk. I suppose teams might think about it before giving him a 10 year contract but even if he was ever suspended the player receives zero salary while suspended.
Heck Jerry Dipoto just received an extra $11M of payroll space. As much as he likes to trade I’m sure he is licking his chops.

My guess is Cano was appealing as I believe those appeals are done before any announcement. He probably decided to drop the appeal since he was going on the DL anyway.
May 17, 2018 at 10:39 am #52742If Cano had evidence that could clear his name, he would have fought through every appeal possible, DL or not. He dropped the appeal because he knew he would eventually lose. But yes, he probably chose the timing to make the best of the bad situation. Perhaps that is what you meant, CC.
FWIW, I agree with gscottar that this has nothing to do with Machado.
May 17, 2018 at 11:01 am #52746Yes, that is what I meant. Players appeal the inevitable all the time just to put it off or to control the timing.
May 18, 2018 at 8:27 am #52920One of Cano’s ex-teammates is not surprised.

ParticipantSo Marco knew this years ago and could put two and two together… while MLB did nothing when there were at least a couple of clues to investigate. Maybe that would have violated some Player’s Asso. rule.
Who does the MLBPA side with, the player that cheated or all the other players that WERE cheated? It doesn’t seem apparent.
May 19, 2018 at 11:45 pm #53258Agree with what he says – you get caught, your contract is voided…
Maybe make the ban a full season for first incident, 3 seasons for second.
May 24, 2018 at 11:49 pm #53895May 27, 2018 at 9:23 am #54084Buster Olney reports the Cards backed out of a deal over the winter for Machado in exchange for Gyorko and pitching. It is an ESPN insider article, so here is MLB Trade Rumors’ summary, which includes a link to the real report for those who subscribe.

May 27, 2018 at 9:27 am #54087Depends on what the pitching really was. CMart, Reyes or Flaherty? – props to Mo. Anyone else, maybe not such a good decision
May 27, 2018 at 9:41 am #54090Plenty of other considerations, such as how many players and how much cash was involved. Also, draft pick compensation went with Machado then but is gone now. It would be impossible to evaluate with such sketchy info, but I expect it will not stop many who already have an agenda.
May 27, 2018 at 11:31 am #54097I don’t think anyone would fault Mo for saying no to one of year of Machado if he had to give up Gyoroko plus Flaherty, and/or Hicks, and/or Weaver. Maybe the price has dropped some since then.
Olney goes on to say that the most sought after player this July may be Kelvin Herrera. I agree with this and I hope we are in on him. Hicks, Norris, and Herrera would be outstanding. If we can’t solve the offense then let’s just create a situation where we only have to score 2 or 3 runs per game to win. That formula worked in 2015 during the regular season.
