Heard a few of the analysts (Byrnes, Smotlz, etc.) on MLBN today talking about the pros/cons of using technology (e.g., electronic devices, random number generators, etc.) to communicate signs as a way to lower the chance of future cheating. Drew comparisons to the way football communicates plays and discussed ways baseball could move away from its current archaic approach. Emphasized how it could save prep time for pitchers, and especially catchers. Another important point was how it could improve the pace of play, which gets a lot of lip service these days.
January 9, 2020 at 5:19 am #118664ED hit on the same thing I have been thinking – Change the system of giving signs. I am not expert enough to suggest any new exotic system but surely they must be something different than fingers. As for catching the cheaters that should be MLBs responsibility. NASCAR makes the cars go through a tech inspection for every race and more if you win. Surely MLB could afford to have a presence at every game just like they have umpires at every game. An MLB rep with the right to inspect anything a team is doing may be worth the money. People were saying that electronic devices are prohibited in the dugouts but during the WS it seemed like every player had a electronic tablet or something similar in the dugouts.
January 9, 2020 at 8:58 am #118668I agree Bob
It has to hurt so bad that even if you are aware of someone else doing it you have the fear of losing everything come to mind…it can;t be a 3 strikes you are out, it has to be 1 and you are done…so harsh that even if it is something that works for a team, members of that team will be so scared that they will report it on their own team or organization
and as Bob said…all the other losses too, picks, vacated title etc etc
January 9, 2020 at 3:14 pm #118760A's drum-beating bleacher fans will be celebrated on Sun. July 19 with a bleacher tribute giveaway item, coincidentally (or not) with the Astros in town.

January 13, 2020 at 1:03 pm #119352Luhnow and Hinch suspended for the year and they lose the next two years 1st and 2nd round picks and 5M fine……. seems light but that’s likely the most they can do.
January 13, 2020 at 1:05 pm #119353The Hammer was dropped!
January 13, 2020 at 1:14 pm #119355No penalties for anyone below Luhnow and Hinch, including Cora and Beltran – not to mention the trash can thumper! 😉
https://www.mlb.com/news/astros-sign-stealing-penalty
P.S. I guess Cora’s punishment is coming later in relation to Boston.
January 13, 2020 at 1:15 pm #119357So they WIN the WS the year they are cheating and they do not have to vacate the title?
MLB just proved they cheated, and yet they still get all the accolades.
$5m is nothing and meaningless, manager and GM suspended for a year is nothing, Cora wont get anything of consequence either, and ALL of the players involved (they are ALL complicit) seem to be entirely free of any ramifications
the 1 and 2 picks for TWO years is something but pretty much nothing
They got away with cheating and got a WS out of it
That doesnt seem to me to be any kind of message…except…keep on cheating as much as you can we won’t stop you nor take anything away from you for doing it
absolutely pathetic
The Cardinals sanctions were almost as bad (or maybe worse) and had ZERO implication for onfield cheating and play
If i were the Cardinals i would be considering a suit for wrongful punishment in light of the inequality of their punishment in comparison to this punishment
January 13, 2020 at 1:19 pm #119358
stlcard25ParticipantIt seems like a decent punishment, to me. Not overly severe or overly light. Hopefully this will knock those guys down a bit. 4 draft picks is nothing to sneeze at…that’s double what the Cards lost.
January 13, 2020 at 1:34 pm #119359The difference I see is the Cards didn’t technically cheat, it was one person, and definitely not on the field.
Dombrowski being fired less than a year after winning the World Series still seems odd, as it did at the time. Which could make one wonder, had something had been discovered internally in regards to their cheating that played a small or very large part of that?
January 13, 2020 at 1:37 pm #119360they cheated during games to win, the team and coaches and management was complicit
-$5m? nothing…insultingly low
-1yr suspensions to GM and manager? so what? it’s not like they won;t have influence on everything from -their homes
– 2 1+2 draft picks…something but when compared to Cardinals punishment for having a password (picks and international money and a guy going to jail and banning), or ATL GM who bribed foreign player (lifetime ban)…nothinghow is 2 more picks enough when compared to what they Cardinals got?

Participantthe 1 and 2 picks for TWO years is something but pretty much nothing
. Its something alright. That is severe punishment. I still feel that those two picks we lost in ’17 has created some damage in the organization… you wind up with Scotty Hurst as your first selection.
January 13, 2020 at 1:44 pm #119362I would consider these penalties rather harsh and justified. I would also expect to see Cora get hammered soon.
I don’t know if there is an appeals process or not, and this may sound like hyperbole, but I think it is quite possible that the careers of Lunhow and Hinch are over. Talk about damaged goods.
January 13, 2020 at 1:45 pm #119363a 1 and 2 twice is “something”
but why it mattered to the Cardinals was because we were not the greatest farm system, nor had we ever been picking very high in the draft for years like the Stros… the Cardinals built there farm on those late round picks and when you take away the top couple it hurt a farm that was dependent on all parts of the draft..
the Stros have prospects for days with all their tanking and trading…losing a couple late round (because they are good now) 1’s and 2’s is nothing
had they been picking in the top 10 again…sure it might have mattered more… but those picks are pretty garbage compared to what they already have in the system
January 13, 2020 at 1:51 pm #119366Hinch and Cora…and Lunhow…why would this be damaging?
all of them got WS win by blatantly cheating, and all their organizations had to do was lose a couple picks and 5mil
If someone could hand you a WS for that…i think every team would do it in a heartbeat…all it seems this did was embolden people to try all new ways of cheating
and with no player ramifications, the players have no reason to not participate and try it on their own too
Hinch and Cora and Lunhow probably deserve a raise for showing how to exploit the system into levying the least amount of penalty for the harshest and easiest way to get wins…
-steal a password to get a leg up on scouting? coudl help but far too sneaky and hard to turn into actual wins and losses
-bribe some foreign kids and their families so they sign with you….still sneaky and still has a chance to not work out-Cora, Hinch, Lunhow…how about we just cheat during the game and steal signs and tell the hitters what the pitches are ahead of time….that way we can win? blatant…obvious…gets wins…gets a WS…punishment is light, and they dont punish the players for going along with it… …perfect…plus we all get to take a year off…we can recoup the money from our salary being lost by the money we get from raises due to our wins and playoff and WS shares right?

It’s been reported that Luhnow is to have ZERO contact with anyone, and if caught, will be banned for life from baseball. He’s not going to risk it imo.
January 13, 2020 at 1:53 pm #119369🙂
January 13, 2020 at 1:55 pm #119370$5m is nothing and meaningless,
In addition, the Astros were fined $5 million, which is the highest allowable fine under the Major League Constitution.
manager and GM suspended for a year is nothing,
I think that is definitely something. Their careers could very well be over.
Cora wont get anything of consequence either
That is wrong, although I guess it depends on your meaning of consequence.
That doesnt seem to me to be any kind of message…except…keep on cheating as much as you can we won’t stop you nor take anything away from you for doing it
If you are a manager or GM would you be more likely, the same, or less likely to engage in these activities going forward after seeing these penalties, knowing that your career would most likely be on the line? If the answer is the same or more likely then that person likes playing with fire.
January 13, 2020 at 1:57 pm #119372I grade it as a B punishment. There’s no way MLB was going to strip them of their championship. The games were played and the stats are already in the history books. Luhnow’s and Hinch’s punishment isn’t even a whole year because they’ll be be back the day after the World Series is over. MLB should have suspended them for an exact whole year: January 13, 2029 to January 13, 2021. The fact no other coach or front office personnel received no punishment really stinks because there was a department within baseball operations to conduct the cheating. Who oversaw that department? I didn’t expect any players to be punished and they weren’t. The loss of draft picks is pretty huge in my opinion because its not just the players, its also the allotment they lose. The Cardinals are still suffering from their forfeited picks.
January 13, 2020 at 1:57 pm #119373These penalties are extremely harsh. I’m shocked by it. Cora is next and that could be ugly. Funny its Houston after the whole computer thing with the Cardinals and Astros. Wow shocking.
January 13, 2020 at 1:58 pm #119374i didn’t see that about Lunhow it says this:

Doesn’t say no contact, just says he can’t travel or attend games, and conduct business for MLB or his team, lifetime ban only happens if there are future material violations…
doesnt say he cant talk to people or influence “unofficially”
January 13, 2020 at 2:00 pm #119376The fact no other coach or front office personnel received no punishment really stinks
In addition, former Astros assistant GM Brandon Taubman, who was dismissed by the club in October after he made offensive and insensitive comments directed at a group of female reporters at the conclusion of the American League Championship Series on Oct. 19, 2019, “shall be ineligible to perform services on behalf of any Major League club, either as an employee or independent contractor.”
January 13, 2020 at 2:03 pm #119378doesnt say he cant talk to people or influence “unofficially”
Jager, if you are Lunhow would you really try to thread that needle knowing that a lifetime ban could be next?
January 13, 2020 at 2:06 pm #119379Wow. Owner Jim Crane just fired Luhnow and Hinch both.
He said the problem came from “bottom up” but the two knew about it and neither stopped it. He did not identify who started it or if they are being disciplined. He went on to say he is still looking into it, but said it would be hard to hold lower level staff accountable since the “players and people above” were directing it.
No one is talking about Cora, but he may be in some serious trouble, too.
January 13, 2020 at 2:08 pm #119381Houston’s owner just fired the GM and the manager(who didn’t want to be even doing the stuff as he broken the equipment twice)….
