I’m sure the CBA doesn’t allow that. They have designated punishments, and there is no punishment for character assassination.

jager: Which players? And why? Pitchers too? Even if on another team? What punishment? Things get a bit complicated when you make general statements. I know because I thought of making the same statement as you and then I thought about it.

Well they tried it 70 years ago Brian. Polaroid camera in CF. Handed pix to 10 year old who ran around outfield fence and made his way to dugout. Gave it to trainer who got his magnifying glass out to see the catchers fingers which took a bit of time. Decided it was a changeup and decided to have the utility man bang on the dugout roof with a bat. Then he realized the inning was over and his team was out on the field. So they scrapped that plan and went back to the runner on 2B stealing sign and relaying what he thought it was to the batter. Not very successful either.
Peter Gammons lost me with his HOF vote when he left off Larry Walker because he was “always injured” even though he’d previously voted for him.
I’d say a major distinction would be that the rule that the Astros violated wasn’t around back then, so those guys weren’t cheating.
I am sympathetic to the idea that many, many teams have been caught stealing signs from CF and not much more than a “knock it off” has been handed down. But the league had been warned this time, the Astros have other shenanigans on their resume, and I also think that MLB found a lot more than they are telling us about (a la Pete Rose).

Many people — perhaps most even — would have liked to have seen some Astros players punished. Fwiw (and not sure this will make everyone feel better) but it’s not much fun in that clubhouse right now. One Astros player aptly summed things up: “It’s a (bleeping) mess.”

Hey LeBron you need to stick to a sport you know more about. Nobody was cheated out of winning a title or at least nobody can prove it but the crying Dodgers want to sue while the Yanks just sit tight and know they didn’t earn it. Maybe the Astros should or should not have the title but there isn’t going to be any other team that ‘inherits’ it. Take it to the bank.

If a player does something wrong and is found out after they are on another team they still punish them wherever they are when it’s found out

MLB is trying to head off potential Players Association grievances if players are penalized for sign stealing. My general take is any time those two can see eye-to-eye on something, it is probably a good thing for the game…

Well Houston is well known but how about the Red Sox. Is Cora the only one to be punished because he was with the Astros? Or have they uncovered anything more on the Red Sox. I know they said that investigation was still going on but it needs to be finished before the season starts I would think.

If MLBPA will not police their own members actions, in-house, they stand for nothing but money grabbing.
I don’t often seem to agree with MLB these days, but I get why they are putting pressure on the Players’ Association to clarify their position on player punishment.
It will be up to MLB and/or the teams to discipline players, not the MLBPA, but if the Players Association fights them instead of being in support, nothing but more bad results would follow.
Manfred may be trying to use the MLBPA as cover for why he didn’t punish the players. At least if he was smart that is what he would be doing. Not many have accused him of being smart though.
