If you want to go after guys who are older, look at the deals made for Beltran and Berkman. Then you’d be cookin’ – maybe 2 or 3 years. They were forced to stretch it t 4 with Matz to get the deal done.
Matz shouldn’t be mentioned alongside Beltran and Berkman. You have two borderline HOFer’s then the third guy let’s just politely say will never enter that discussion.
August 17, 2022 at 2:57 pm #196023I am thinkjng if Quintana finishes the year Strong and goes for the Money he might get 3/24 or 2/20
August 17, 2022 at 4:29 pm #196039bccran
ParticipantI only mentioned them, gscottar, to point out the length of their contracts. The Cards went outside their business model with Leake and Fowler. They would like to have signed Matz for no more than 3 years, but had to go to 4 to get him in a competitive marketplace.
If guys want to talk about trades for guys who only have a year or two left on their contracts (or signing veteran FAs to short term deals), there’s a lot of credence with that. Signing a big name pitcher to a 7-8 year FA contract? Nope.
August 17, 2022 at 4:41 pm #196041I agree that Beltran and Berkman were excellent signings. I think someone like Verlander would be similar.
August 17, 2022 at 5:30 pm #196048bccran
ParticipantVerlander would be an excellent addition. He’ll turn 40 in February. He has a player option for $25 million for 2023 with the Astros. What do you think it would take to get him?
Dollar amount and number of years.August 17, 2022 at 5:50 pm #1960541982 willie
ParticipantWell here we go bccran I get home from work n I have to read your big mouth. I don’t have to ignore anything especially bullies like you, Bullies. Funny you are pretty much the only one like that on here but you can’t recognize that fact. You keep starting stuff I’m going to finish it.
August 17, 2022 at 6:00 pm #1960551982 willie
ParticipantThis is for everyone but the one that didn’t even like this thread. I think Verlander would be a solid pick. It would take more since he does have that option but I think he would be willing to do a three year deal. Yea it’s risky but boy is he pitching great this year. Far better than anybody on our team. You could try to lure waino back but I think waino is slipping a bit so not sure that’s a good move. Degrom would be great but huge risk. We could still do some trades if we don’t do free agents which of course we don’t take much risk there usually. It’s a nice conversation even if I think the Cardinals always fool themselves in to thinking they have more talent than they actually have and don’t do really anything.

ParticipantBrian – I’m asking you publicly to please do something about “willie”. For the sake of the integrity of the forum. Saying a poster has a “big mouth” and calling him a ‘bully” goes directly against your posting rules. UConn and any other posters who have time can also be helpful in this matter.
I’ve done nothing to be disgraced personally by “willie”. Thank you in advance for your help.August 17, 2022 at 7:00 pm #196066
jj-cf-stlParticipantBc, you’ve been picking fights on this board for a week and now you want to play the poor little victim. You are a discrace to this forum.
Now, ask your buddy UConn to scold me too, like I would give a crap.

ParticipantAnother couple of pitchers that might not be too bad would be Nola who has been mentioned or Kershaw if dodgers basically let him walk.nola has a pretty good era though record isn’t that great but I like the numbers. Ive always been a big fan of Kershaw but he is injury prone at times. Personally I would like him to finish his career with dodgers but if not, the Cardinals would be perfect for him.

ParticipantFlesh pile, jj? Isn’t that cute and courageous.
I’d be all for signing Verlander for 2 years at $25-30 million per year. He’s a very special case.
August 17, 2022 at 8:37 pm #196086
jj-cf-stlParticipantYou’ve already cost Brian the loss of my subscription. Care to try for my posting rights?
You are a pathetic troll and a disgrace to this forum.
August 17, 2022 at 8:53 pm #196091bccran
ParticipantName calling and accusations like that are plebeian, jj. I haven’t insulted or picked a fight on this forum. I have disagreed with opinions of others at times, like most of us do. But I’ll tell you something, jj. As a combat veteran if someone shots at me and starts a fight, you bet I’m going return fire. And the bullets have flown from you, willie, and LA.
Again, Verlander would be a great pickup. He and Waino are wonderful dinosaurs.
August 17, 2022 at 8:58 pm #196094big mouth” and calling him a ‘bully” goes directly against your posting rules
You seem very much like a bully. If I had to take a stand, then yes you are a bully. You need help.
Several members have tried to help you.
You called Willie out with a personal ad hominem, saying to him “ But it’s not a “win it all or I won’t enjoy it” attitude. That’s too much of an immature stance.” You told him his stance was immature, simply because you disagree with him.
That’s what bullies do.
Then two hours later you admonished him with “ Willie – a mark or maturity is to treat people with respect. Attack a post but not a poster. Learn from that”.
When LACardFan pointed out your hypocrisy to you, that would have been a great time for introspection and apology. But no, you doubled down an appealed to Brian. We already know where he stands on your antics.
Willie doesn’t need my help to defend himself. But your behavior and words affect many other forum members.

ParticipantVery brave, so cal. Join the flesh pile. I said that I enjoy every Cardinal game for recreation. That if only winning the WS gives me pleasure, then I would be disappointed 90+% of the time. That’s not confrontational. It’s a personal choice. And if you look carefully, you will notice I only fire back. I never fire the first salvo. But one thing is sure, stooping to the level of combatants isn’t smart. And that’s my fault. I own it. My bad.
August 17, 2022 at 11:25 pm #196142Please note, again you express an ad hominem against me (“brave”) while I am trying to help you see your hypocrisy.
And that I’ve joined a flesh pile. But if only one person complains against you, you object and want the leaders to admonish him. But if two others agree with him, it’s a flesh pile. This is a challenge.
But ending on a good note, I respect your regret and hope to move on. Thanks.
August 18, 2022 at 12:25 am #196143Who knew free agency was such a hot topic in the neighborhood of glass houses?
August 18, 2022 at 12:57 am #196145agree that Beltran and Berkman were excellent signings. I think someone like Verlander would be similar.
They sure were. However most on the old board didn’t like the Berkman signing. They thought he was done.
They aren’t signing Verlander.
Any lefthanded or switch hitting SS who can hit well from the left side out there? lol
August 18, 2022 at 8:10 am #196158bccran
ParticipantAre there any FA catchers outside of Contreras that look decent? I’ve gone over the list and can’t find one.
August 18, 2022 at 9:49 am #196165I hadn’t checked this thread lately and almost wish I hadn’t. No one wants to read all these insults. That is not what this forum is about. Please keep the focus on baseball. Thanks.
August 18, 2022 at 10:24 am #196169bccran
ParticipantThank you, Brian.
Earlier in this thread Pads mentioned both Barnhart and Nimmo. Nimmo seems to be having a pretty good offensive season. Wonder how his defense is.
August 18, 2022 at 10:55 am #196170I am looking neither for praise nor arguments – what I hope occurs is some personal self-reflection on why these same kinds of skirmishes occur over and over. I don’t need to read about it here as people try to get in the last word and scramble for the high ground. I don’t want people to leave and I don’t want to put anyone in the penalty box, either. I want to see positive changes in forum behavior.
If anyone wants to talk about this, send me a note through the CONTACT US form at the top center of the page. On the rest of this thread, I only want to see posts about “Free agents for 2023”.
August 18, 2022 at 11:04 am #196172bccran
ParticipantNot talking about fault on any side, Brian. Just generally thanking you as a poster for moderator effectiveness. Again, thank you.
August 18, 2022 at 11:05 am #196174Please stop and get back on topic.
August 18, 2022 at 11:16 am #196176bccran
ParticipantI just did, sir, by bringing up Barnhart and Nimmo two posts ago. Looking for other posters thoughts on that.
