I needed a lefty. The most talented LH since Steve Carlton. Oh, what should have been.

January 14, 2022 at 1:35 pm #179084Nooooooo…My dreams are crushed. The most electric baseball moments of recent memory were when Jimi Hendrix’s version of “All Along the Watchtower” would blast over the speakers at Hammond ‘s field at AA as Rick walked up to bat. This was about the time everyone began to realize he was a legit power hitting phenom.

January 14, 2022 at 1:48 pm #179086When we first started, I considered choosing all position players until the end and then having a pitching staff of: Joe Magrane, Andy Rincon. John Fulgham, Allen Benes, and Alex Reyes. I eventually found it neither funny nor wise.

You might have had enough offense to support that staff, Nigel. All of those guys looked to be real good, but other than Magrane injuries derailed them. Course the jury is still out on Reyes.
If one was taken, maybe you could have added Scipio Spinks to your team.
January 14, 2022 at 3:51 pm #179094Nice pick 25, I had him as one of my two bench players.
January 14, 2022 at 4:27 pm #179095Talking about Lance Lynn, I was in favor of the club keeping him as well. But they never were serious in trying to sign him.
Still I thought Lynn should have taken the qualifying offer, which was something like $17M at the time. I felt he would never get that much in free agency, so he should take it and then go free agent again the following season.
So bottom line, I felt like both the Cards and Lynn made mistakes when Lance’s agreement ended here. But since then he has done well for himself, while the ball club has missed out. Hard to say if he would have given us just enough extra to get a pennant though. But we know we have not gotten one since before he left.
January 14, 2022 at 5:33 pm #179098Lance was a 1st round supplemental pick #39 for the loss of FA Troy Percival.
Troy had been signed for a 1yr near-minimum re-establish his health contract.
January 14, 2022 at 5:46 pm #179099Ironically I think we lost the comp pick for losing Lynn by the late signing of Greg Holland. We ended up with Holland’s performance and gave up pick 59.
January 14, 2022 at 6:05 pm #179100Compensation for FA Lance Lynn rejecting his Q-offer was 3rd round pick #95.
Mateo Gil was selected 95th, and eventually traded with multiple players for Nolan Arenado.
January 14, 2022 at 6:15 pm #179101Thanks. You just wiped an angry narrative right out of my mind. I can be a little less bitter about Holland now.
January 14, 2022 at 8:28 pm #179105That same offseason MIN signed Lynn for 1/12mil and we signed Holland for 1/14mil.
If we sign Lynn, instead of Holland, we avoid the comp picks altogether, but that’s hindsight.
January 14, 2022 at 8:45 pm #179106The history of late signings makes this lockout situation risky. Even Kyle Lohse got injured to offset his early success.

January 14, 2022 at 9:26 pm #179108118.mudville- Ryan Ludwick, OF
Don’t know why…. but Ryan Ludwick’s production as a hitter during his time in St. Louis was by far the best of his career.
January 15, 2022 at 6:19 am #179109Going to round out my pitching staff with a guy who could vault himself way up a draft like this in the next 5-10 years. He just has to stay healthy.
