Agree, but we can’t get a 2yr return at the trade date, due to Grays opt out. I don’t care where or how long he stays elsewhere.
If it is all about maximizing the return then they should try to trade him over the winter but if we want to at least pretend that we are trying to win games next year then we need to keep him on the roster until at least the trade deadline. Either way we are eating money.
When an owner decreases his player budget by 43mil in one season, he’s not trying to win. Now if you can win on the cheap, Bill is all for it, right?

It’s hard to say. Is this year’s budget a reflection of the expected dip in attendance hurting the bottom line, or is it from last year’s drop in attendance hurting last year’s bottom line? If it’s the latter, then we are in for another austere winter. If the former, then we may see a little bump.

I think most every owner would prefer to spend less money while winning more. Only a few can pull it off. We will see if St Louis becomes a Cleveland-Milwaukee spender or if they will trend more toward historical norms (upper middle third to lower upper third in payroll, meaning 7th-13th most years) in the years ahead.
2028 has a lot of players becoming free agents. Cards, really need SP badly. Liberatore, McCreevy, Gray are locks. I think Pallante could be tried in the pen, if he refuses, Cards will have to accept him as a number 5. Cards should go after Ranger Suarez.
If they can’t get Suarez, Zac Gallen would be okay, There aren’t a lot of younger options at SP that are good. It sucks the Cards don’t have anyone to bring up due to Tommy John. Hate to be Bloom, he’s got his work cut out for him. But SP is the number 1 priority!

Evidently a small sample size of Herrera during ST will make that decision, so unknown at catcher?
Ivan has been a catcher in this org for how long? Is this staging for a deathball II scenario, where Ivan can magically throw better? TBD.
Ivan is the best hitter on this squad but probably the 4th or 5th best defensive catcher. Leave him at DH and let him rake. He has the potential to put up a .900 OPS. We don’t need to mess that up with with trying to make him a catcher.

I know I’m in the minority, but I’ve always felt dh is a position. It takes the right guy to stay engaged in the game physically without playing in the field. Herrera is good at it. Leave him there.
I agree KCB. Not only that but I think when a guy is playing a position he isn’t comfortable with it can impact his offense in a negative way. Trying to make him play LF or C is just asking for trouble. I know that us old school NL guys shouldn’t think that way but it is what it is. Times change.
But according to the reporting, Herrera has “long spoken out” about wanting to catch. So he clearly is not uncomfortable with catching and no one is making him do it. He met with Marmol and Bloom to find out what they want him to do so he can catch again.

Let’s do a fact check. Here are Herrera’s batting results by defensive position for his MLB career to date:
While at catcher (337 PA) .309/.381/.453/.834
While the DH (409 PA) .275/.372/.443/.815Maybe he feels more a part of the game while playing in the field, too.
When 1st rounders underwhelm at a different positions, it raises questions.
Walker and Jordan are corner infielders out of position. Middle infielders roam better, like Edman and Donovan, but then a DeJong comes along and slides in at SS from 3B. It’s the individual for me. Is he capable to roam.
CB must be smart enough not to create a block out of thin air, so they must not think a catcher is coming up any time soon.

That’s great, but he can’t throw anyone out at the present time. If their catcher symposium turns him into at least an average catcher, than fine. There’s lots of reasons that’s good. But right now he is not playable at that position. He is at DH.

I would strongly recommend not getting any news off of Facebook unless it’s from an account you follow like Brian or Goold. They purposely put misleading info out to get engagement.
3 games left against the Cubs but we all know the off-season for StL actually started when they shut down Winn and then Contreras – which is fine by the way.
I feel like the position players for next year are pretty well set less the excess ones they trade away and then they hopefully add a rh power bat to the outfield. An actual MOTO bat to build a line up around.
I think they have plenty to choose from to assemble a decent bullpen too.
The starting rotation is the biggest mystery for me. Based on recent comments it looks like Gray is adios so that would leave only Liberatore and McGreevy from 2025 as locks for 2026.
