The only player in that lineup that didn’t see significant plate appearances last season is Wetherholt.
But yes, Arenado, Donovan, and Contreras were huge parts of the team last year and are now adios amigo – gone.
So while those 3 are gone the lineup except for JJ does feel samey-samey.
Hopefully, with the extra year under their belts and those three guys and the plate appearances they would eat gone – the guys left will have their opportunity to step up and be better or likely be shipped out before 2028.
The looming 2027 labor dispute has me concerned as it could really negatively impact a young rebuilding team like StL.
Forsch, playing the Torres types before weeding them out seems necessary to avoid another Adolis Garcia giveaway (15 bwar).

I don’t think anyone is expecting a boom in attendance during a rebuild. That is why they are stripping payroll expense down to Rays level.
I think what you look for is development more than wins as they will be lucky to win 75 this year
Can Herrera stay healthy and can he take another offensive step to say 25-30 HR’s with a high average
Can Burleson adjust to first and improve off of last years offensive #’s
Can Crooks beat out Pages
What type of offense will Weatherholt produce, where does he bat…he was leadoff in AAA
Can anybody in the Outfield develop into an offensive threat and stay healthy
Can Walker and Gorman get on track or are they just bench players or on another team come 2027
Can Winn improve his offense with a healthy knee more to or better than his 2024 #’s
Liberatore and McGreevy can they become mid rotation or better type starters
Does a healthy Dustin May have anything left
Can Leahy and O’Brien repeat last year

They won’t drive to see it from 1-2 hours away. That’s where they really lost their fans after the trade deadline in 2023.
Our fans have checked out. The cubs and brewers have more loyal followers than we do now. Let that sink in for a second. Just shows how entitled and fairweather the bfib really were this whole time.
For me I Might make a couple games this year in late April or early May or Late Septmeber. Really Just hate baseball in hot weather. Wish we had a dome. Peoria is an hour away and I’ll take in 3-4 games this season. Likely in the same time frame if the weather cooperates.
I don’t blame our fans. We drew over 3M in attendance about 20 years in a row except for covid. But the fans finally got tired of all of the bad signings, bad extensions, bad trades, frugality and dry powder. This is a proud franchise that has won ONE playoff series since 2015. Let that sink in. I am not surprised the fans have checked out.
Its not the fans that were the problem. They def arent fair weather fans. They stayed longer than they should have. The fallacy that you have to have a winning team every year to keep fans is a bad joke. Sure numbers will dip n surge a little bit based on standings but the best fans know when an owner and general manager arent doing what they can to run the organization right,not win, run it right. If guys like weatherholy and others can come in and play inspiring ball, again not neccessarly win, the fans will slowly come back assuming economy doesnt tank. The fans want to support the team,but they dont want to support bad ownership or bad management. There was no real incentive for ownership to do anything as long as 3 million fans kept coming through the turnstiles.
It seems like we shouldn’t forget 3.2 million tickets sold for a 71 win season not long ago. It takes something besides losing baseball games to end up where we are.
Hopefully when ST’ing begins, the youngsters on this season’s roster will be exposed to endless intruction concerning things like astute baserunning, laying down a bunt, checking on baserunners in order to prevent the big lead, throwing through the cut-off, etc. You know, all of the things that aren’t obvious in the box score but are key elements to winning baseball games. Baseball fans appreciate that sort of thing and if the team presents the fans with what looks like a concerted effort to play solid baseball, the fans will show up in the hope that these young players will eventually develop into a baseball team that can compete over an entire season.
2023 was a surprise let down year following Puhols farewell tour and the chase for 700.
I’d bet butts in seats were way less than tickets sold after the all star break.
Not to say that Cardinal fans are fairweather fans because they are not.
The Cardinals haven’t fielded a really good team since 2015. That’s a decade.
The 2022 Division Title was as much or more about the rest of the division as it was about the Cardinals.
Many people, including some on here, could see the results of the rot from within at all levels of the organization. We didn’t have gory details but smoke/fire and all that.
BDW has been cooking up a simmering stew of mediocrity (with a couple of farewell tour gimmicks floating on top) for a decade now. He waited at least a full year if not two too late to implement real changes.
This isn’t high school or even college – it’s a professional business and you get graded on (a) the regular season and then (b) the post season results.
When the cost of attending a game has skyrocketed to infinity and beyond many fans’ puke point – especially for a regional drawing team like StL where hotel & food for a weekend get added to the tab – BDW will get the attendance he and his underlings have earned.
Gray and…. a bunch of Matz, Gibson, Lynn type SP 4/5. Bill doesn’t buy top end SPr’s very often. We better develop them.
Blooms’ trades now allow Gorman to start, JJ with a clear path at 2B, and Burly to 1B reworks the infield. Ivan at C/DH.
The outfield looks like a group that won’t stay on the fairway, constantly scrambling to hold a starters spot. Noot being injured, and a short timer, is NEXT out the door if/when ready.
We haven’t added the outfielder Bloom speaks of, and a fall thru thru cracks guy doesn’t change much now. “Changes in 2026” really needs happen for our outfielders, and for the outfield roster long-term.
