Two DH PAs doesn’t constitute playing baseball. Somebody slap the paddles on him and see if we can get a pulse.
Top of 1. Devin Smeltzer, the crafty 6’3 195 lb. right handed veteran out of Voorhees, New Jersey, dealing for Miami today, being summoned into emergency service due to injury to Miami’s slated starter, Cabrera, whom tweeked something while warming up for this game.
Scott – Victor, first pitch swinging,whacks a solid single into right to get things rolling for St. Louis.
Goldy – Strikes out swinging on a breaking ball right on down Broadway.
Gorman – Walks.
Scott swipes 3rd. but Gorman is gunned down at 2nd by Betancourt on the attempted double steal.
Arenado- Walks.
Scott comes prancing home with the game’s first run on a wild pitch.
Matt Carpenter- Flies out to Mesa in deep right field to retire the side.

Very true Brian. A lot of fans feel ike the Cardinals front office is severely overrated within the industry but the farm system is severely underrated.
Oh my…….Walker boots an easy fly ball to right and Miami ties matters up at a run apiece……shades of Chris Duncan out there…….ah better not use Chris as an example here……momentarily having difficulty thinking of another right field defensive liability for our Birds.

Walker – Lines a base hit to right on the first pitch he encounters on the afternoon.
Burleson- Drills it right back up the middle and out into center field for a hit…..and Walker is motoring towards 3rd and the throw……is just a titch late and the Cards have runners on the corners with no outs here in the top of the 2nd inning.
Herrera – Bounces it out to Anderson at short who will fling it over to Arraez at 2nd for one and the throw to Bell at 1st base will be tardy and Walker will score from 3rd on the play.
Winn – Strikes out swinging on a breaking ball.
Scott pops out to Anderson at short to retire the side.

Goldschmidt now with 17 AB’s this spring and 10 strikeouts. It’s spring training. It’s a small sample. But it’s still concerning.
Top of 3rd. Matt Andriese now dealing for Miami.
Goldy – Strikes out swinging….get it out of your system now Goldy!
Gorman – Strokes a soft liner into center field for a base hit.
Arenado – Smokes a shot down the line and past Burger at 3rd base…..Gorman rounds 3rd and he’ll head homeward as Davis has trouble digging the ball out of the left field corner…..and the throw is airmailed over the catcher’s head and Gorman scores with Arenado taking up residence at 3rd.
Carpenter- Drills it down the 1st base line and past Bell and into right field for a hit…..a 2 base hit at that with Arenado scoring and just like that it’s 4-1 Good Guys. Arenado and Carpenter’s hits were carbon copies of each other, with Arenado’s going past 3,rd base and Carpenter’s 1st base.
Walker- Grounds out to Anderson at short and Carpenter has to stay put at 2nd
Burleson – Walks.
Herrera- Strikes out looking on a borderline call by the home plate ump.

Marlins 1Bell whacks a 2 run blow to center and it’s now 4-3 Birds.
Brian seems to be presently not in the house…..so maybe just maybe I can sneak in another PBP inning.
The fish plate 4 3rd inning tallies as they surge to the forefront in a 5-4 ballgame. Hopefully it’s only a temporary surge.
Top of 4. Andriese still toeing the Marlin rubber.
Winn – Rifles a shot down the line in left and that ball will carom off the sidewall as Davis tracks it down, and the Redbird rookie will cruise into 2nd base with a leadoff double…..and boy Cardinal batters are really peppering the 1st and 3rd baselines today…..thus adding a bit of salt to the wounds of Marlin pitchers.
Scott – Strikes out gazing.
Goldy – Flies out to Mesa in deep right and Winn will easily scamper on over to 3rd base.
Gorman – Walks.
Winn scores with Gorman moving to 2nd on a wild pitch…..5-5.
Saggese- This kid is going to be a dandy….Texas is going to rue the day that they parted ways with this fellow……mark my words. Grounds it out to Bell…..and through Bell’s glove at 1st base and out into right field….in comes Gorman with the go-ahead run on the Josh Bell error.
Pitching change: Eli Villalabos on for Miami.

Walker – Hits it with authority to center field, but Myers has a beed on it and will catch it for out #3.

Marlins 5Just received an agitated text from Brian instructing me to Cease(not of the Dylan variety) and desist with the PBP, as I have definitely exceeded his strict 400 word PBP pitch count on the day. On one hand I think he’s babying me a bit, but on the other hand it’s kind of refreshing that he doesn’t want me to overdo it, thus jeopardizing regular season PBP.
This tiny lettering on these new threads not only makes it difficult to read the player’s name, but is also a bit of a callous discourtesy directed towards us older fans who may be a bit optically challenged. Oh well, it wouldn’t bother me too much if they did away with the names and simply displayed the player’s number like the Yankees and Red Sox. In fact, I think it’d be a good idea.
It’s too bad Walker didn’t hit behind the runner on second base there in the third and so failed to advance him. Little things. Situational things. It’s not just about homers. He has to avoid hitting a grounder to the left side. If he doesn’t have the skill, then bunt, but don’t ground it to the shortstop.
Great observation, TD! It wasn’t all that long ago where I could read small print with very little light and no reading glasses. Not any longer. And it all happened totally out of the blue. One morning I could read just fine and then the next morning I opened up the sports page and it was all blurry. We’re getting old, gang……but not old of heart.
Whenever Luckenbach takes an AB I’m reminded that today’s game tolerates an all or nothing approach. Nice to see him put it in play and get the RBI sac fly. It also makes me think that if he were playing today, Adam Dunn would be at or near the top of the highest paid position players in baseball.
I think Scott making the team out of ST would be a good idea with the injuries. Carlson should be on the bench. Worse case scenario you can send Scott down when everyone is healthy. Rehab will be in the Cards, so Noot and Edman probably won’t be ready until late April/first of May.
We’ve got 15 hits and 11 walks through 8. If we could play whoever they’ve been sending out there all the time we could go 162-0.
