I got to see the game vs. Mets on FNY. O’Brien (!3 pitches 11 strikes) and Pallante (14 p 10 s) looked very good in their 1 inning each and one K each. I did notice that Crooks and Redmond looked a bit over matched in their ABs. Herrera did fine and LBaker looked ready to go at the plate. Nootbaar had two hits… the 1st he slapped to left and the second I missed. Fun game to watch on a cold March 24th. day.

I thought Graceffo looked really good. Lots of sharp breaking pitches that setup his fastball.

Hence has very lively stuff. He is still working on the control though. He misses a little too high when he misses high and same thing when he misses outside. Plenty of walks and strikeouts both today. I don’t trust him to be able to throw a strike when he needs to yet. But there’s still plenty of time for him.

Overall, a very good job of pitching today aside from the 1st inning by Rom. Even Leahy looked pretty good in the 9th with his lively fastball. A good win today against all the Astros regulars vs only Masyn Winn from our projected starting lineup.

Checking the box score, Scott took 2 walks.

    Winn 3 for 3 with a double.

    They both stole a base.

Looks like a short bullpen today. If Robberse goes 2 and Hjerpe goes 2 and each reliever goes 1, that only gives us 8 innings. Surely there are more pitchers that are “also eligible”! Either that or our manager has a math problem.

I thought the same thing. I assume step players fill the open innings. Perhaps a Rajic sighting is on tap.

It was supposed to be Roby followed by Robberse, so we are short a guy.

Carp could always pitch the 9th. We need leadership on the mound in addition to the clubhouse.

Gallegos still has a good slider but he can’t seem to get his fastball by anyone. And a lot of guys are laying off the slider. I’m wondering if he might be tipping pitches. Either that or the fastball velocity is just down. I’m getting nervous that last year was not an aberration.

a little early to make any big judgement on any players, but it definitely bears watching going later in Spring on Gallegos, guy has thrown a ton of innings the last 3 years.

Kittredge looked pretty good, think he will be important if he can stay healthy.

Hjerpe also looked good, needs to cut down on the walks, I kind of wonder if he isn’t more suited to be a relief pitcher in the long run.

Hjerpe only has 8 pro starts under his belt heading into his 3rd year. Its hard to envision what kind of develpment or progress he could have made. Hopefully he can get AA batters out this year.

No clues yet as to who is going to be DFAed for Crawford. All the guys I see as candidates to be dropped are listed as available today. It will probably take a day or two for Crawford to report, pass his physical, and be formally announced. This will be his first-ever Florida camp.

    No TV again until Wednesday…

I don’t see the required number of MLB starters here…

I kind of like today’s lineup as posted above.

    Donovan 4
    Goldschmidt 3
    Nootbaar 7
    Arenado DH
    Contreras 2
    Walker 9
    Winn 6
    Saggese 5
    Scott 8

If you put Gorman at 5, you could put Saggese at 4. That frees up Donovan for the bench/DH role.

In your scenario, where is Arenado playing? Looks like they decided Gorman would rest today.

I understand the switching around would be interesting for a spring game, but not for the regular season. When games count, I would rather have Donovan playing every day (along with Gorman and Arenado) and Saggese on the bench rather than vice-versa. In the meantime, they are just tinkering around…

Reminder that today’s game is on SNY/MLB.TV… In CF, Carlson didn’t get to a ball that looked catchable, but the Mets runner didn’t come around to score in the first…

Mikolas went two scoreless then Helsley tossed a 1-2-3 third. Still 0-0.
