Juan Soto has the it factor. I knew that AB he was hitting a HR. The confidence he shows and just fouling off those pitches looking for the one he wants.
Well worth the $400 million someone will pay him this winter.

Yankees win their 41st AL Pennant and will compete for their 28th WS championship. That’s quite a few. And oh, Luke Weaver’s the winning pitcher of decision in the AL Pennant clincher…”Youneverknow!”
Yep, it was mentioned in the “Former Cardinals” thread that former Cardinal Luke Weaver got former Cardinal Lane Thomas to fly out, sending the latest version of the Bronx Bombers to the World Series.
Not to mention former Cardinal-to-be, that never happened Giancarlo Stanton won the series MVP.
This edition of the Bombers, Judge, Soto and Stanton stacks up pretty well against past juggernauts that include Ruth, Gehrig and Meusel, then Gehrig, DiMaggio, Dickey, and later Mantle, Maris, Berra. In the ‘70s they had Jackson, Munson and Nettles.
I think Munson’s exclusion from the Hall is mostly due to his relatively short career. He tragically died in a plane crash 10 years after making his MLB debut. Thus his numbers look less-than-Hall worthy – 46 bWAR, 113 homers, 116 OPS+.
Recent inductee Ted Simmons is similar in statistics a, but gets a boost due to having some 3000 more ABs. And Teddy more than doubled Munson’s home run total.
But Munson was a beast. He could flat out play. Think had he lived he would be there. And maybe he will eventually get there anyway if he gets a veteran committee groundswell of support.
Yeah Bikemike, I entirely get the part about the short career span, but his career was obviously cut short by tragically extenuating circumstances. I don’t think there’s any question that the circumstances surrounding Munson’s short career should weigh in more than enough to override any objections put forth because of the length of the great Yankee catcher’s career. Instead, why not focus on his accomplishments which include a ROY, three GG’s, an AL MVP award, a .292 lifetime BA, 7 AS selections and he was the unquestioned leader of 3 AL Pennant and 2 WS championship Yankee teams of which he hit .357 in 30 post-season games. Pure clutch in big games. He played his entire career with one team which just so happened to be the NY Yankees which, like it or not, counts for something. I could go on and on about Thurman Munson, but the best I can do is to say what I said in my other comment…Anyone who saw him play knows he belongs in the HOF.
You sold me, 1TD. I agree that his relatively short career should not count against what he did while playing.
I believe it was after the 1976 World Series, where the Big Red Machine stream rolled the Yankees – Sparky Anderson made a comment about how impressed he was with Munson. And Sparky had Johnny Bench as his catcher! For Munson to make such an impression is noteworthy.
I just read about that that incident and actually Sparky was quoted as saying, “Munson is an outstanding ballplayer that would hit .300 in the NL, but you don’t ever compare anybody to Johnny Bench”…”Don’t ever embarrass nobody by comparing them to Johnny Bench”…Haha! Munson was reportedly more than a little hot under the collar after hearing what was said by the obviously biased “Captain Hook.” At any rate, Munson is also the only catcher in history besides Bench and Posey to have won a ROY, MVP, GG and WS championship. I saw him play in all 3 of those ALCS and WS during the 70’s and Thurman Munson is in my mind undoubtedly an all time great HOF catcher. He really made an impact on a baseball field.
I’d have to guess that the Dodgers and their fans are nowhere near to liking the idea of this NLCS extending any further than tonight’s game 6. And if NY were to win tonight, I’d also say that whatever it is that they term momentum would swing over to the Mets for the Game 7 finale.
Well, the Dodgers look like they want to end it tonight as they answer back with 2 runs to take the lead.
Eddie and Mookie are neck and neck for the NLCS MVP award with Eddie holding the edge at the moment.
I still can’t get over Edman slotted at cleanup…I’m surprised our very own whiz-kid didn’t come up with that bit of shrewd brilliance.
Yeah, well we got a guy who couldn’t get a job in MLB two years ago, so there.
