Fry saves the Tribe with a 2 run tater to lift the Indians to a 4-3 lead headed to the visitor half of the 8th. And the Royals already trail the Yankees 1-0 at Kauffman in the 2nd. I’m beginning to think KC may not have enough steam to get past the Yankees. We’ll see what happens.

Clase K’s Sweeney to end the Tiger threat in the 8th. Those Indians have a BP that sings, “The Party’s Over”…I can’t remember seeing better collective numbers from a BP than these guys.
Sweeney looked like a rookie for sure, that moment was a bit too big for him. He seemed to be the only person in the stadium who didn’t realize Clase wasn’t going to throw him a strike until he was forced too.
The Tribe steal a run with an old fashioned safety squeeze in the 9th to tack on some insurance. That thing worked to absolute perfection.
Jim “Mudcat” Grant used to do color on the Cleveland Indian broadcasts of the mid-70’s. Mudcat spoke often of his fondness for various catfish and crawdad delicacies back home in Lacoochi(spelling probably wrong), Florida. You would have loved listening to him, Rat. Matter of fact, what a duo in the booth Rat and Mudcat would have made. Many may not know this fact, but it was Mudcat Grant whom coined the baseball term “chin music”.
How good is a BP that features 4 pitchers with over 65 IP’ed and the ERA of the least effective arm says 1.92? It doesn’t seem fair.
Clase allows a rare run in the home half of the 9th, but it’s not enough for the Tigers as the Tribe wins it 5-4 to extend this ALDS to the 5 game limit. The squeeze play proves to be the difference and Whitey’s smiling.
Yeah, Pugs, Grant also went 21-7 for the ’65 AL Pennant winning Twins and was 2-1 in 3 starts against the Dodgers in the ’65 WS. Mudcat also played for our Redbirds in ’69 after coming over in a trade with the Expos in June of that ’69 season. I guess the Expos got him in the expansion draft. Anyhow, Mudcat went 7-5 in 65.1 IP’ed for the Cardinals in 1969.
Nice Pugs, on the Mudcat reference. The 60s and 70s were great times, with pitchers named Mudcat, Whitey, Blue Moon, Catfish, Goose, etc.

It doesn’t roll off the tongue very well as a nickname, but The Left Arm of God is a pretty high and mighty moniker among the mere mortals of the league, haha.
The Royals just didn’t have the horses to get past those dang Yankees. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
The Royals made it really easy for Luke Weaver in the 9th. Lack of batter discipline at the plate — the modern way.
They sure did, Euro. Every time Weaver entered the game during this ALDS, I thought to myself, “Oh good, the Royals now have a decent chance”…Haha! But it looks like Luke’s finally figured it out.
I am hoping for a Yankees and Dodgers world series myself. I’d watch that.
Cleveland/Detroit and San Diego/New York? Nope, wouldn’t watch any of those combos.
Yankees and Mets? Well, maybe……
Wacha the Royals starter and now Weaver has become the Yankees closer. Wish we would have just kept Wacha and not re-upped Mikolas.
Oh, and Lane Thomas a big hit in the Guardians win.
Mudcat Grant – very eloquent speaker and a pretty good singer as well as having a fine career. Another one of those that we gave away during those years, and went on to have very good seasons with other clubs.
