Another good game with SD and LA. Both sides have phenomenal pitchers, and hitters to match. Good to see Edman out there, but hope Shildt takes this one. Padres look loose, Dodgers look a little tense to me. Smoltz is a very good, objective analyst too. He seems to call the right pitches before each pitch which shows vey good insight.
Padres edge the Dodgers to within one loss of oblivian in what was essentially a 1-0 game for the final 6 innings. Tomorrow should provide plenty of action for baseball fans with all eight remaining teams slated for battle.
These have been some good games.Cool that 3 of the 4 AL teams are Central Division clubs.
I am rooting for San Diego in the NL. Shildt is getting a nice reward for his lifelong service to the game, mostly in the lower echelons. Had our management group been as wise as Abraham Lincoln, a tall order (so to speak), but they would have responded the same way Lincoln did when it came to whether or not Mike should be retained. When Lincoln was told that despite U.S. Grant being his only general winning battles, he drank too much, Lincoln said “Find out what kind of whiskey he drinks and send a barrel to each of my other generals.”

If the Tigers can hang on to this 3-0 lead they’ll join the Mets as a team that was not only long age declared KIA, but also a team that is one win away from advancing to a LCS. I guess the moral is, “Youneverknow.”
Luis Tiant…….Dead At Age 83. I had a few run-ins with Luis as a relatively small kid out near the outfield bullpen area at Milwaukee County Stadium back in the day. His ZaNy pitching style induced me to heckle the daylights out of him whenever he was out in the pen warming up. I have a few stories about Luis, but one time he really ticked me off by faking throwing me a souvenir ball just as he was summoned into the game. I forgive you Luis!!
I’m also becoming entirely convinced that having to scratch and claw until the last day of the regular season and not being awarded any sort of bye is in reality an advantage for a baseball team. The fellas remain battle hardened and amped up, and moral and camaraderie seem to be amplified.
That’s sad about Luis. It’s always a solemn tone when another boyhood hero says goodbye. I guess when I was a kid, I thought these players would be around forever. So long, Mr. Tiant.
Quintana looking dialed in and sharp so far today. Jose’s now allowed 0 ER’s on only 6 hits in his last 14.1 IP’ed in post-season action. I expect the Redbird manager to walk out and get him before too long…
Nice job by Quintana to escape only down by a run. He fooled Bohm and didn’t get anything to show for it, but avoided the big inning.

Suarez exits after 4.1 IP’ed and allows 5 hits along with issuing 4 BB’s. On the surface it looks like a lousy pitching line, but the crux of the biscuit is 0 ER’s.
Phillies in a world of it in the home half of the 6th. The bases jammed GB force out at HP helps, but they’re not close to being out of the woods yet. Need another GB, K or a pop up.

Edit…Anyone who watched those mid to late 70’s KC/NY ALCS battles will never forget them. They were veritable 5 game wars.
Those Royals-Yankees series in the late ‘70s were indeed great.
Man, the Mets are looking more and more like the 2006 or 2011 Cardinals. Maybe their huge payroll will finally pay some dividends.
