Yeah, I’m not sure all those Catchers are actually coming stateside for the season. They may just be supporting all the pitchers throwing every day. There are a couple of pitchers I expected to come to Jupiter from the DSL and maybe 1-2 other position players. So maybe they’ll come later. And, I certainly expect to see some cuts like every season. Right now they just have to evaluate where everyone is at after the winter.
March 4, 2023 at 1:23 am #213509Hi Cardsfan,
I did see those other three catchers, but I didn’t count them as they originally came in as STEP camp members. Still good to see 7 guys come over from the DSL. I have to agree with Jnevel and don’t think they will all stay stateside though.
March 4, 2023 at 4:32 am #213510Goldschmidt is a machine, but the scratch reminded me that he will turn 36 near the end of this season. He is under contract this year and next and it would be great to get two more seasons like last year.
Would it be smart for him to back off from 150+ game, 650+ PA seasons, or should he continue full speed ahead, seeing as he just turned in an MVP performance? Does he go flat out and get as much out of his body as he can while the getting is good, or back off a bit to get extended mileage?

ParticipantWhy is Querecuto getting playing time?
March 4, 2023 at 12:04 pm #213521It seems like Noot is the only regular fielder not to get much game play time before heading off to the WBC. Hopefully he doesn’t Wally Pipp himself.
March 4, 2023 at 12:14 pm #213524#STLCards manager Oli Marmol said star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt was scratched from Friday's 8-3 win over the #Marlins because of a family matter. Marmol said he & Goldschmidt had been in contact since 6:45 AM on Friday, and that he suggested the MVP simply take the day off.

March 4, 2023 at 12:14 pm #213525#STLCards manager Oli Marmol said outfielder Dylan Carlson (arm fatigue) is on a “no-throw” plan until at least Monday. Carlson hurt his arm in Thursday’s game. He is OK to hit, but the club wants to rest his throwing arm through the weekend.

March 4, 2023 at 12:29 pm #213527I’m not interested in paying MLB.com for broadcasts of spring training games. Yesterday they let me listen to it as a radio broadcast. But today I have to pay. Not going to happen. Would have liked to hear thoughts and comments about Connor Thomas.
March 4, 2023 at 1:06 pm #213528ESPN Gamecast say Sidney Thomas is pitching for the Cardinals? Their box score says the same.

Relief PitcherMarch 4, 2023 at 1:17 pm #213529Donovan o for 3 with 2 K’s. Hitting .200. So far his optimized mechanics is not working too good.

March 4, 2023 at 1:24 pm #213531But Gorman is tearing it up, puts us up 3-2 with a dong, driving in Walker. Gorman hitting .364 so far.

I guess ESPN didn’t get the memo. I wonder if anybody called Pujols ‘Jose’ when he was a new guy.
March 4, 2023 at 2:00 pm #213534I think with Pujols they were more focused on trying to figure out how old he was.
March 4, 2023 at 2:00 pm #213535Arm fatigue?
DeJong was apparently suffering from arm fatigue earlier in camp also. Kind of a strange injury for a non-pitcher.
March 4, 2023 at 2:00 pm #213536Gorman’s high ceiling starting to take effect?

Yep. I think (and hope) these are not injuries in the sense of structural abnormalities or tissue damage, but just more a “feeling” that needs rest. Remember when we were kids and threw a 1000 balls the first nice Spring day and it felt tired the next day? Maybe it’s more like that. You’d think by now these guys would have it figured out, but maybe it’s just they have taken too steep a climb angle on their Spring takeoffs.

Well, it sounds like some middle aged fatties got off the couch and now they are sore. Jeesh, stay in shape.
March 4, 2023 at 3:09 pm #213541Jordan Walker with two homeruns today.
March 4, 2023 at 4:00 pm #213542I watched today’s game with USA TODAY baseball writer Steve Gardner.
I don't get out to as many spring training games as I once did, but Jordan Walker's 4-for-4 game with a rope double and two mammoth HRs (both on two-strike counts) may have been the most impressive spring performance I've ever witnessed. #Cardinals pic.twitter.com/IPF4CX1HVP

March 4, 2023 at 4:03 pm #213543Walker seems to be forcing himself onto the opening day roster.
March 4, 2023 at 4:17 pm #213544We’ve got another 3 weeks, but Walker is looking like a starting left fielder. That creates a roster pile up.
