All jokes aside, the 3 BB’s tell me that Mr. Jack is reluctant to challenge hitters. Not a good sign for a pitcher of his purported ilk.
March 26, 2023 at 3:43 pm #214796Once a guy has shoulder trouble he will always have a bum shoulder. It doesn’t mean he will never be able to pitch effectively, but it does mean you can’t count on him beyond the last pitch he threw. It was the Cardinals decision to write him into the rotation and hold their breath, so OK, that’s what we do. Maybe Nathan is right and his shoulder is acting up. Maybe he is having trouble figuring out how to be effective pitching in a way that his shoulder can tolerate. Maybe he’s working on stuff. We just take it a day at a time like you have to with a bum shoulder guy.
Jack still has plenty of hype shine on him. Just earlier I read some blog article, Fansided maybe, that mentions how the rotation has depth, but not top of rotation stuff other than Jack. Really? You mean the stuff he can’t throw any more because his shoulder can’t tolerate it? These people need to get a grip. Jack does not have the stuff he had. If he can manage to stay healthy he is not going to be the old Flaherty with top of rotation stuff. He has what stuff his bum shoulder can handle. Maybe he can stay healthy and mostly give us a chance to win every 5 days. But, as I have said very often, it takes a lot of reality to grind off that shine.
March 26, 2023 at 4:53 pm #214802Jack looks just like he did all last year! Walks way to many hitters, throws way too many pitches an inning and just looks average at best! Anyone with faith in him, it is blind faith! He has done very little the last 2 years! Hope I’m wrong but I doubt I will be!
March 26, 2023 at 5:08 pm #214804Why am I not surprised?
March 26, 2023 at 5:16 pm #214807Speaking of Memorial Day, I just now became aware that the Cardinals have a stretch of 19 games without an off day that begins on May 12th and extends to the end of May. That’s a ton of games without a breather.
March 26, 2023 at 5:48 pm #214809On top of the walkshe also hit 2 guys
March 26, 2023 at 6:36 pm #214812Haha!…With an outing like that, I don’t blame him…
March 26, 2023 at 8:18 pm #214818Is he trying to hide an injury? If I remember correctly, last year the Cardinals recommended some kind of surgery for Jack Flaherty, and he refused, saying he didn’t need it. I have no ill wishes for this kid. We need him to pitch up to his ability. But if there’s something physiologically wrong with his arm, it must be corrected.
March 27, 2023 at 4:53 am #214835I can hardly wait to see what kind of lineup Matz has behind him today vs the Orioles.
March 27, 2023 at 7:13 am #214836Flaherty had a very good 2019. It’s 2023. 2020 his ERA was up over 4 and the injuries started.
He’s been battling injuries since then.

MatzMarch 27, 2023 at 8:51 am #214845Looks a lot like what should be the regular lineup, doesn’t it?
March 27, 2023 at 9:51 am #214847We have some pretty good bottom of the order hitters.
March 27, 2023 at 12:15 pm #214855Montgomery not Matz
March 27, 2023 at 12:42 pm #214856The bottom of the order hitters – Gorman and Walker – BOTH struck out their first time up today.
March 27, 2023 at 12:51 pm #214857Send them down right NOW!
March 27, 2023 at 1:20 pm #214876I think Rats you are a big fan of batting averages and RBI. Gorman is batting .288 with 4 homers (tied for most in the team this spring) and first in RBI with 13. But every time he strikes out you jump all over him.
March 27, 2023 at 2:00 pm #214878The Redbirds were really good in K rate last season and placed 4th out of all 30 teams. I was surprised to see ATL. ranked near the bottom at 28. The Braves K’d as many times as a bachelor with bad breath and still won 101 games.
March 27, 2023 at 2:35 pm #214879Nice to see minor league corner infielders Jacob Buchberger (2022 Peoria/Springfield) and Chandler Redmond (Springfield) spark the #STLCards offense to an 8-2 win over the Orioles, each with a three-run home run. Good finish to the Grapefruit League-best 17-7-4 mark this spring.

MatzThis will most likely be the opening day lineup on Thursday, minus Matz.
March 27, 2023 at 3:10 pm #214882I wonder if somebody besides Flaherty will be the starter Saturday.
March 27, 2023 at 5:16 pm #214885No one knows, Bling, but I happened to come across a list of all the projected starting line-ups and SP’ers for each of the 30 teams on opening day and I couldn’t help but to notice that nowadays along with each teams’ starting pitcher they list the name of that teams’ closer. I thought that was interesting. Times sure do change. I guess they don’t have much confidence in anyone working a CG…Haha!
March 27, 2023 at 6:06 pm #214886I have tickets to the game two weeks from today, as well as for Wednesday afternoon. Today here in the Mile High City we had snow and mid 30s for the high.
But they say 60s by midweek. It could be 75 in two weeks, or 25. Always risky early in the year but I sprung for tickets anyway. Got the Wednesday tickets last Fall on a discount deal.
March 27, 2023 at 8:14 pm #214894Nice, Bikemike…In my experience baseball seems to always afford the opportunity to see something that I’ve never seen and I’m hoping to one day be able to say that I attended a game that was played during snow flurries…Haha! Enjoy the games and bring home a winner!
March 27, 2023 at 8:17 pm #214896Speaking of CG’s, what are the odds this season of the possibility of more no hitters that CG shutouts?
