The Cards are off Wednesday. On Thursday, Adam Wainwright will make his last start prior to the WBC against the Astros and Framber Valdez at Roger Dean.
It would definitely be a big plus if Liberatore delivers on some of the promise this year. I haven’t counted on it and think if he doesn’t emerge this year, it might not (probably won’t?) be in the cards. Maybe he can be the main reason PECOTA undersells the Cards for 2023.
It has become clear that Walker in LF is a thing, and not just where he could fit in the lineup on a given day. So, what thing is it? Is there some particular reason why guys like Gomez and Carlson would be placed in RF rather than LF? Is Walker not a RFer after all? Is the thinking that when Walker breaks in it will be in LF? Why?
On another note, signing Matt Adams might be a good move for the Nats. If anybody would be helped by the shift ban its him.
Maybe the braintrust is rehearsing a dry run for the possibilty of O’Neill in CF if Carlson falters and they feel like Walker’s ready. If they’d be comfortable with Walker in RF, they’d certainly feel that way if he were placed in LF. And it may just be a simple case of, hey, it’s only ST’ing, so lets move everyone around and see what’s possible just in case. At any rate, the Nootz is the only sure thing in the OF…Rats’ll be happy about that…
It is a conundrum wrapped in an enigma, TD. I bet I’m the only one who has noticed that Walker has made his debut on the official depth chart on the Cardinals official site, cardinals.mlb. Yes, he appears on the MLB depth chart even though he is not even on the 40 man roster. But he is listed as depth in RF not LF. The cleaning lady didn’t get the memo.
Yeah Bling, I was also led to understand that Walker was being groomed and championed to eventually be placed in RF. In any event, I’ve been tuning in to the ST’ing games that are available to me and the only time I really look up at the TV and pay close attention is when Walker steps into the box or the baseball heads in his direction in the OF. These past few days are the first opportunity I’ve had to lay eyes on him and I’ll say that he certainly is an athletic looking, big and lean young man and I’m pleasantly impressed. If he performs well in ST’ing, I say to let him rip anywhere on the playing field that they can wedge him in.
They rewarded O’Neil for his off season work by showcasing him in CF to begin spring. TO is now leaving and the truth will be revealed while Noot and TO are gone. I suspect we see Gomez some in CF. If Walker starts seeing time in right, then O’Neil in CF was just a kindness.
The biggest story is that Walker could go north. If Walker and Carlson solidify roles, the WBC could end up Bonilla-ing TO or Noot.Here is a question: If the thinking was that both O’Neill and Carlson would remain part of the outfield, what reason would there be for switching places, TO to center an DC to corner? That scenario doesn’t seem to make any sense.
DC is by no means an exceptional outfielder. He’s pretty much average. TON has a gold glove and very good speed. He could very easily be a better CF. In fact, I was somewhat surprised when he didn’t move there following the Bader trade. Probably just because DC had more recent experience there and we were in the homestretch of the season. But TON could already be a better CF choice defensively. Ultimately,I think this is more about having interchangeable parts than anything. If DC can’t hit right handers again this year, then he can be taken out and TON can be moved to CF (or start the game there to begin with). But there is no universe where Gomez pushes DC out of CF. That’s just silly.
I would point out that the Cards org had no idea that Adolis Garcia could play CF at the MLB level before giving him away. I wouldn’t blame them for having a look at Gomez before taking the wonks’ word for it.
I thought Carslon looked better in CF than RF last year. Jnevel might be right in that it is about building flexibility. It’s easier to mix and match pieces in the outfield when two or three of the pieces can handle CF adequately or better.
Well, if that’s your thought process, then we should go ahead and give Luken Baker a chance at CF as well just to see if he’s actually good at it. Maybe he’ll surprise us.
Gomez actually has played some CF in the past. But he’s not good as an outfielder. Bad routes. Probably bad reads. And he’s just not all that fast.
I want a shortstop playing shortstop.
I want a 2ndbaseman playing 2ndbase.
