What we need is a Fans Union.
Fans are the customers. Their interest (eyeballs) drives advertising dollars.
Their ticket and merch purchases impact the revenue stream.
Baseball, like any other sport, is simply one flavor of entertainment. Other forms include movies and music.
It’ll never happen because (a) it would be too hard to organize and (b) most fans would not follow a directive to ‘go on strike’ against their entertainment. They simply cannot live without their fix.
However, if fans across all of baseball were actually to organize themselves and hire good representation; then they could have a seat (and a strong one) at the negotiating table.
We are the idiots that keep throwing our money at these guys.

March 2, 2022 at 8:18 am #180358The unspoken real answer, “Because this was our plan all along. It is worth losing a few games in April to break the union…”
Reporter asks why real bargaining didn’t begin until three months after the lockout started

As MLB commissioner Rob Manfred took the podium to officially announce that the first week of games would not happen, he occasionally flashed a smile and even laughed https://t.co/BTeadURXMM

stlcard25Participantstlcard25 – I’m guessing that you’re just as pissed about what’s happening as I am.
Mud, I am upset as well. I wouldn’t say I’m apoplectic, however. My priorities began to shift around the start of this ongoing COVID drama in early 2020 and probably have changed permanently, I’d guess. I still like Cardinal baseball as it’s like an old friend to return to every evening to see how things are going. I will admit that I probably watched no more than a handful of games from mid May until the September stretch last year. I just had other interests. Really, if it wasn’t for two things: 1) my family connection to the Cards (cousins, uncles, etc all are fans) and 2) the great community of people here and the super work that Brian and the staff do in bringing us coverage of all our Cards and prospects, I probably wouldn’t miss it much if the whole season was canned.
So I guess I’d say I’m mad that greed has driven this unnecessary delay that has caused my friends and family to miss out on the game we all love. There’s plenty of blame to go around but the target certainly goes most squarely on the ones who deliberately locked the season out to begin with.
March 2, 2022 at 10:35 am #180363I think what you say speaks for a lot of fans.
March 2, 2022 at 11:04 am #180364There is definite blame to go around. I have said repeatedly that I am not impressed with the leadership of each group and that still stands. Tony Clark seems overly combative and eager to overcompensate for the blunders he made during the last CBA and Manfred just seems aloof and clueless. He seems determined to go down as one of the worst commissioners ever.
As for salaries, until the owners are ready to publish what their salaries are and what the official revenues of each team are then they should stop complaining about player salaries. Right now it is a one way street. The players salaries are splashed on the front pages everywhere but team revenues and ownership salaries are secretly guarded in some vault. Why is that?
Seriously, I am wondering why that is. To my knowledge every player in MLB, except for those who play for the Braves, play for a privately held company. Why are their salaries public information? I work for a private company and my salary is not public. Maybe the players should start demanding that their salaries become private until the owners are ready to open up their books. It should be a two way street and it might give the fans a little more to consider when looking at both sides of the ledger.
March 2, 2022 at 11:12 am #180365Good summary..
MLB Season Delayed, Games Canceled
My thoughts on what the heck just happened, the owners and players, and for some reason, pickleball! With plenty of Tweets, info, some humor, and what to do now. https://t.co/F7wL5z7gGj pic.twitter.com/DEUFMsPIs6

March 2, 2022 at 11:43 am #180367Im not suprised by Manfred’s behavior. He is the same guy who called the world series trophy a piece of metal.
Meanwhile a venn diagram of the people complaing about players wanting more to “play a kids game” and the people complaining when players have tok much fun is a circle.
March 2, 2022 at 12:57 pm #180368America needs baseball. I am just wondering if and when the Biden Administration will get involved here. Doesn’t this all fall under the auspices of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act?
March 2, 2022 at 1:43 pm #180370Odds from Betonline.ag:
Total MLB Games Played in 2022 Regular Season
Over/Under 120½When Will 2022 MLB Regular Season Start?
May 7/4
June 2/1
July or later 5/2
No 2022 Regular Season 5/1
April 11/2In other words, the lines are such that it is better odds that there will be no season at all than to start during April.
March 2, 2022 at 7:12 pm #180372When do minor leaguers report for ST ?
March 2, 2022 at 7:23 pm #180373The more opinion pieces I read about Manfred “not the” Mann and his Earth Band, the worse he looks in terms of leadership and character. Seems low on honesty, and throws out cliches rather than accepting responsibility.
But as I mentioned before after reading the Ty Cobb bio “A Terrible Beauty”, where the author says that baseball must be a great game to have thrived despite its leaders.
March 2, 2022 at 7:32 pm #180374This is the first tweet of a series of tweets and Jon alludes to the Braves of funneling baseball revenue into their real estate holdings. Which would beg the question: how many other teams are doing something similar?
Out of curiosity, I checked the Braves' financials for the last five years. As the only team owned by a publicly traded company, we can get a look inside how a team operates. https://t.co/HJHa3Zl7Fh
— Jon (@GroundRuleDoble) March 2, 2022
The Braves Group had a total of $1.8 billion in revenue from baseball from 2017 to 2021. It rose 42% from $371M in 2017 to $526M in 2021.
Their statements note that the Braves' primary use of cash is capital expenditures on their mixed-use real estate development.

March 2, 2022 at 7:39 pm #180375Seems very truthful
Back in December, I was told by a team official that a prominent, influential owner had been openly saying his goal during negotiations was to "break the union", not find a fair deal.
Not all 30 principal owners feel this way, but the fact that mindset exists is problematic.

Now that I think about it, seems as if the ruling was that MLB does not fall under the jurisdiction of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act. My bad.
Either way, somebody needs to do something because America needs baseball.

March 3, 2022 at 8:46 am #180388Cardinals minor leaguers report this Sat March 5.
March 3, 2022 at 9:16 am #180389Much to be perturbed with, but what really ruffles my feathers is that both parties honestly believes that we fans would go into convulsions if we were to go without what they have to offer. That we fans can once again be royally kicked in the butt………yet still come back with smiles on our faces when they finally decide to grant us the privilege of allowing us to spend our hard earned monies on their product. The gall of them. Well I’m totally leaving baseball for 2022 if they aren’t playing regular season games by May 1st. And if not on the field by June 1st, I’ll bid farewell to baseball for the remainder of my life. I would terribly miss my good friends here at The Cardinal Nation, but these chumps have really put the screws to us this time. They must pay the price.
March 3, 2022 at 1:31 pm #180393There were no formal proposals exchanged today during the negotiations. Unknown when MLB and the MLBPA will meet again.

March 3, 2022 at 3:56 pm #180394This is about activism and redistributing wealth. It is not about fairness for players. How can anybody say that a person making a minimum of around $100K/month needs more money in order to feel like they’re not being cheated? Identify and name the real problem that the players (and many Millennials) have with our society as it is, and start talking about it. With that there’s the possibility of both sides coming out of this feeling successful. As it stands right now, this is about each side trying to dominate the other side….that is, show the other side who’s boss. Maybe everyone involved needs to let major league baseball crash and burn. Then, see what rises from the ashes.
I also want to mention that sportswriters and other media personnel need to realize that about half of the people in our country do not support the kind of activism that is going on with baseball. People who are paying part of their salary are being turned off by these media personnel. When you look at the posts from media personnel here, and on other social media platforms, you get mostly the impression that there is only one side to this story that matters.

Please share the source of your data.
This current survey of 17,000 people on the lockout has a different view:
Support players 33%
Support owners 13%
Support neither 54%In other words, of those who have an opinion one way or the other, support for the players is close to 3-to-1 over the owners.
(There are a half dozen questions in this survey about other lockout-related issues. You can see the responses after you answer the survey)
March 3, 2022 at 4:55 pm #180401Trying to get the owners to agree among themselves seems a challenge.
Andy’s article gets into details in the room but confirms what I had heard: that a hawkish group of low-to-mid low owners had grabbed the wheel rendering Manfred powerless to get an offer to the players that would keep things moving. CBT is the big issue, but there’s others. https://t.co/PryGs3eAYS
