A Major League Baseball spokesperson said tonight that if a deal is not in place by Feb. 28, regular season games will be canceled. “A deadline is a deadline,” the spokesperson said. Player pay would not be recouped, nor would those games be rescheduled, the spokesperson said.

I think at this point, the handwriting is on the wall. The season’s start will be delayed. We’ve seen this game before…owners were willing to go as low as 60 (maybe fewer) games in 2020 so who knows what the bean counters will spit out as the number that the owners will make enough money and cause maximum pain for players will end up being? 130 game season? 140?

The MLBPA has stated that if regular season games are missed they will not agree to playoff expansion. We will see if that is a bluff or not, but if it isn’t, that is a pretty big stick instead of a carrot.
As each day passes I think opening day could be May 1 or later.

Just this morning I went on to MLB.tv to cancel my auto renewal. Unfortunately, they don’t let you manually tell them your reason for cancellation because I had a nice writeup for them all lined up.
Hopefully they get a large number of “others” as tens of thousands cancel out their yearly auto renewals in the days leading up to Feb 28th.
The guys on the MLB Network said last night if a deal is not reached by February 28 (my birthday, by the way) that who knows when a deal would be reached because there is no longer any urgency. So, if no deal is reached by the 28th we might be looking at a June or July start.
This has the potential to drag out for a long, long time. As for me personally, I am on the side of the owners in this one.

Major League Baseball has cancelled three more days of spring training games: March 5, 6, 7, spokesman says. The earliest spring training games can start, by MLB’s scheduling, is March 8. Of course, that’s contingent on getting a deal done by then, so more games could be canceled

Draft lottery is one area in which the two sides are said to be making progress. Avoiding the obvious answer of a salary floor, the owners are giving the sleeves out of their vest.
A lot of club staffers and agents strongly believe a draft lottery will have only a slight impact on MLB's tanking problem. What is really needed, they believe, is a more direct mechanism to compel teams to spend on payroll, rather than pocketing the money and accept the losing.

MLBPA dropped its request for arbitration eligibility expansion from 75 percent of players with 2-3 years of service time to 35 percent. MLB doesn’t want to expand it at all from current 22. No change to minimum salary or prearbitration bonus pool proposals for either side.

Contradictory to all the negativity/ upset surrounding the MLB/players talks, one person involved said he believes the sides are now “within striking distance” and a deal could be done be tomorrow night. Luxury tax remains the sticky issue but a 225/230M threshold should work.

MLB Network, Plesac, just said that both sides are still meeting. That was around 6:00 pm on Sunday. MLB seemed to think that was a positive sign.
