I never said Arenado and Goldschmidt would be bad. There is reason for concern for each of the ones I mentioned just like there is reason for concern for the outfielders you mentioned. I just choose not to dwell over and over on 1 area of concern when there is cause for concern all over the team. You could say Flaherty had a poor 2020 and didn’t do very well for almost 1/2 of 2019. Waino has had injury concerns and will be 40 this year. Kim has had a poor spring. CMart has had a poor spring. There is not much proven starting pitching depth. Edman has had 1 great year hitting. Carp looks washed up. We don’t have any proven infield depth. Etc.

Some of this stuff is just banter with levity. In other words, good natured back and forth. Of course one game doesn’t make a point.

Forsch – you take things way too seriously. Enjoy yourself. Have a little light banter. We’re all huge fans, but still, baseball is just a game.
Common wisdom has to be considered in context. There are only 15 games between now and opening day. During that span the opening day active roster will be finalized, as will the taxi squad. Placement and trac of the next group will be decided. Whether and what to go outside the organization to obtain will be clarified. I cannot agree that each game alone proves nothing or means nothing in this situation even though it is generally true.
It means a lot in the aggregate, blingboy, if you’re trying to correct some things to improve. Or competing for a starting position. I try to balance the ST stats for a player with what happens everyday. Paying close attention to how they’re approaching each at bat, the contact rate and quality of contact, etc. It’s not a good sign if they’re making the same mistakes as they have in the past – poor pitch recognition, biting on the slider in the dirt and the high 4 seamer, etc.
Well bccran, bottom line is all players decline especially as they get to mid thirties. Yea there are some that still put up solid numbers but it happens to all. Now conditioning and eating right can extend careers but I don’t think those things maintain bat speed or quickness.

Just decided to see where we rank as far as some full team offensive stats this Spring Training.

Between Gorman, Mendoza, Robertson, Hurst, Toerner, Capel, Szczur, Nootbaar, Baker, Sosa and Perez, they are a combined 3 for 51. Removing them raises the team batting average 34 points. But we are tied for 18th in total runs scored and even higher for runs per game.
Well bccran I looked up all your names. Way to really go out on a limb with some all time players. Rose yea he was pretty good, willie mays, no really trailed off after 35, barry bonds did hgh so didn’t bother, yaz was ok up and down but ok, same with fisk though he was up and down his whole career and never really great offensively, henderson was solid. Then we have ted williams and ty cobb. Two of the greatest hitters in the history of the game so basically while I enjoy looking at stats, this showed me nothing far as the conversation go.
bling, our regular season record is 0-0. I’ll let the players continue to work on things during spring training and see what we have when the games count.

I typically wait until the end of June before passing judgement on a team.
It doesn’t always work but that number of games usually (not always) gives a pretty good idea of how the team is going to go.
Also gives a good read on how the other teams in the division are going to perform.
I’m hopeful that the Cardinals can win 90+ games this year because 2022 seems to be the target year for really flexing on the league.
Id rather not even have Carpenter on the team as 2021 is the last see what we got year before making decisions for 2022. I’d rather every single one of his ABs go to someone else.

Molina really begin to be phased out as well. Not kicked to the curb but damn give the back ups 250 ABs so we know what we have (or don’t have).Friday pitchers: Wainwright, Miller, Webb, Helsley, Gio.
Note that lineup includes Arenado ahead of Goldy and Bader starting. Despite Mike Shildt hinting strongly yesterday that Wainwright would bat tonight, they are continuing to use the DH instead.

I don’t think pitchers need to bat in spring, other players need at bats. Pitchers can work on hitting in practice, particularly bunting. Every pitcher should be able to bunt with proficiency. No excuses.
I’m really liking that rondon guy. He’s not young and he seems great with the glove. Too soon to judge hitting but looking good so far. Also thomas seems like a lock, hopefully he stays healthy. Reyes being put on a innings limit is bothersome but I understand. I think he could be a solid setup guy.
Webb and helsley not so much. I’m not big on webb anyway though I know the Cardinals are. Helsley I like but he just seems ok. I like what I see but not getting results still early.
