Ultimately, whether Harper makes sense or not depends on how much he signs for.

3 Years, $120 million, DeWitt should do it (if he wants a super team to compete with the Red Sox, Astros, etc).

10 years, $300 million. DeWitt won’t do it, as he doesn’t believe in those contracts.

    Dodgers shopping list

I liked this article because it talked about the disadvantages of platooning versus getting best overall hitter.

Also, if Dodgers are able to trade away Kemp & Puig, they would probably be the front runners for Harper

Fowler is set to make $49.5 million over 3 years and Cecil $15.5 million over 2 years. So, incremental cost is $7 million.

I would think Seager would be an expensive bench option in case Carpenter got hurt or needed a rest. May also be a defensive replacement in some games.

The value is getting your two worst players off the roster AND clearing a roster space.

Oh Brian, my pitch to Stanton was all over the Stanton thread. You can go back and read it if you like.

Funny how DeWitt had gone on record at the time the Stanton rumors first started and said deals like that almost never work out.

Something would have to give rather than compromise the defense that way.

Baseball players can (generally) impact the game more with their bat than their glove (JMart might be the exception).

Bob Reed noted in one of his posts last week that WAR seems to be weighted by batting.

    Here’s why:
    – In the article you linked to about Bryce Harper’s abysmal defense, it noted that he made 97% of the plays he should have, versus league average 98%. That is NOT STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT.
    – He also had -26 DRS, which I’ve pointed out is flawed for many reasons
    – But look at his offense – 34 HR, 100 RBI, 103 runs scored, .889 OPS

EVEN IF the -26 DRS was really a true measure, which it is not, his offensive contributions OVERWHELM his defensive deficiencies.

You can argue that RBI’s and runs scored are dependent upon your teammates, but so are defensive metrics.

And if you create a lineup with a crazy OPS sequencing, you can sacrifice elite defense for elite offense.

I don’t believe the Cardinals were really trying to win Stanton.

Their arguments for him joining here were tradition, low cost of living and less traffic than other cities. Come on.

If we can resign Goldschmidt next year AND sign Arenado, I’d prefer to keep Carpenter and trade Wong.

I just want to see what a lineup featuring Arenado, Carpenter and Goldschmidt can produce

The reason Tampa wants right-handed hitters is because they got killed by LH pitchers last year because they have too many LH hitters. The Cardinals problem in reverse.

According to Marc Topkin, they’re willing to take on salary this year, but only on a S-T basis. They’d be getting Gyorko for $9 million, plus Martinez, both of whom destroy lefties.

No Gyorko to TB as a right-handed 2B/3B that can hit lefties

He makes sense in MN as an upgrade at 3B over Sano

Luis Avilan as a LH reliever makes sense.

I’m hoping our left-handed bats come from Tampa, but I’d really like to see:
JMart + Gyorko for (1B/OF) Joe McCarthy + (2B/OF) Brandon Lowe

I am basing it on the belief they are still after a left-handed hitter and at least one reliever, and we pretty much know JMart is going to be traded.

The only way I see them moving Carpenter back to 2nd is if next offseason, they resign Goldschmidt AND sign Arenado.

Which would give us an OPS monstrous infield (and we’d have one of the best defensive LEFT side of the infield).

    – Arenado’s career OPS = .886
    – Carpenter’s career OPS = .847
    – Goldschmidt’s career OPS = .930
    – DeJong’s career OPS = .800

Last year, Arenado, Goldschmidt and Carpenter were all in the Top 12 in terms of OPS

    Milwaukee Brewers Outlook this year

“Until you feel like you have the best player in baseball at every position, you have an opportunity to improve. We have a number of high-end players but we know we can get better.”

That has been my complaint about the Cardinals front office the past few years, they seemed to be trying to “make do” and weather the storm rather than trying to upgrade the team.

This year is the first year in awhile it looks like the Cardinals are trying to upgrade the team.

Now THAT would be a trade I would do in a heartbeat. Get rid of our two worst players and clear a roster space in one trade? Done.

I’d even “throw in” JMart to get the deal done.

Waino’s achilles injury was coincidental to running the bases. Not caused by it.

I will always prefer the strategy of the NL as it exists today to the DH.

    1. They have a good team this year, we don’t know what they will have next year, except a bunch of holes once the clock strikes midnight
    2. Harper has always seemed a me-first player, Arenado just goes about his business (extremely well)
    3. Arenado’s defense is fantastic

Of course we don’t want to block Gorman so you have to consider that even though he hasn’t even made it to High A yet.

You know the production of Arenado. You don’t know the future production of Gorman. Depending on the cost, it might be advisable to sign Arenado.

Gorman could always move to 1B. Nunez could become our SS of the future. They could be used to trade for premier players at other positions.
