Arenado is the top FA player available after 2019 and he will go into the 2020 season at age 29 and he plays a premium position and is a tremendous offensive player along with his to notch defense….and people dont think he will cost 30 million a year?People are already throwing out 5years 150 million dollars numbers for Goldschimdt extension and some people here dont think a younger Arenado will cost that much?

Another reminder that talking in absolutes about the off-season is not a good idea. Per Goold:

“The Cardinals interest in Harper, according to a source, could hinge on if the length of contract he seeks shrinks from the reported 10 years in the coming days or weeks.”

Joel Sherman of the NY Post looked at 41 MLB contracts over $60 million and concluded that only five of them were great successes for the signing team.

    Dodgers shopping list

I liked this article because it talked about the disadvantages of platooning versus getting best overall hitter.

Also, if Dodgers are able to trade away Kemp & Puig, they would probably be the front runners for Harper

BDW is not going to approve a ridiculous contract for an up and down player with an injury history who may or may not be a good teammate.

So he missed some time. How many games did he play in 2018? We get it Cran you simply dont like Harper or paying big dollars for anybody.I got news for you....get with the times and the days of indentured servitude and cheap contracts are long gone.Thats the way the business of baseball is heading. This isnt the 50-60s anymore.I remember baseball in the 60s and how the game has changed. You either adapt or stagnate .BTW Harper averages 131 games a year even with some injuries. And nearly 4.0 WAR yearly.

I refer you to an article on this forum about how many of the largest long term contracts have worked out. Facts, not opinion.
    Very few have paid off.

And you’re right. I neither care for BH or his agent.

By the way, personal insults about being behind the times aren’t attractive. Suggest you refrain from them.

BCcran-i suggest you take your blinders off and realize that baseball has changed.I think If you take that as a insult then you are pretty thin skinned and overly sensitive.

Cards just need to stop being cheap and go sign Harper end of story he is just what this franchise needs!

I do not think Harper is end of story. Most writers I read believe that Boras is going to let the Harper signing drag on for many weeks if needed. The Cards need to focus right now on fixing the bullpen and make the other moves to have a more balanced and competitive roster. Keep an eye on Harper, but don’t count on it. That is reality.

Yep. If he was willing to take a shorter deal, I’m sure the Cards would make a competitive offer. But they’re generally too smart to commit themselves to true albatross deals.

That is because this FO is to dang scared to go anything HUGE like this….that much is a proven FACT!

I don’t care for Harper mainly because of the monstrous contract his agent is going to try to manipulate. And I don’t like the ethics of that agent.

I also know the Cardinals business model fairly well and that after getting Ozuna and Goldy the chances are slim to none they would put a huge amount of eggs in one basket with Harper. Therefore, as BW says, there are probably more realistic conversations to have regarding the bull pen, backup catcher, and LH hitting reserve
outfielder. Those who continue to obsess over Harper are probably the ones who have blinders on to the way the Cards do business.

Yep, it was a proven FACT they would not take on $250 million for Stanton or offer $200 million for Price.

Did they do what it took to sign Price? nope they got cold feet and didn’t go any higher…that is a fact…

the FO is scared to go make the huge splash…sure fixing the pen will help a little but right now still a 3rd place team in division…and that is without Mil and Cubs doing ANYTHING yet.

BW – Stanton was pre Ozuna and Goldy.

It seems like the Cards could spend up to close to the luxury tax and still make money. BDW isn’t getting any younger so maybe he’ll pull an Ilitch and go for broke eventually. But I’m not sure that is imminent.
