The Cardinals pen has 106 meltdowns, 2nd most in MLB. Also 30 blown saves, 3rd most.
As a long time fan, there are two things that stand out to me, and both are astonishing. The first is having the two 100 RBI guys centering a homegrown middle of the lineup. We often had to buy the big bats in the middle, or some of it. The second is being able to field an all home grown rotation. Yeah, just now its leaking oil and belching smoke, but so what, its year one of the rebuild and we can already do that much. I know some like to look at how many Texas League meatballs we’re putting in the parking lot or how many future insurance salesmen we’re striking out. I like to keep my eye on the business end of the pipe.
I had breakfast with a couple who were at the game last night. Both Cardinals fans in good standing as opposed to selfie stick wielding nacho munchers. The takeaway was its a team of youngsters searching for clubhouse leadership which has yet to emerge. That sounds right, and expected. That bears watching over the next couple years as it is a necessary element of success which can’t just be created by the system or willed into existence.
The transition to a homegrown ML roster of young players was completed this year. Our token veteran mercenary was offed at the beginning of August, along with JoJo. A squad of young players had all season to get better. So how did that go?

Yes, I think trading from areas of excess to strengthen weakness is more likely than meaningful FA signings. I consider that part of the rebuild rather than going outside it. We haven’t seen this yet and don’t know what the level of impact will be. It takes quality to get quality, and we don’t know how far up the scale Bloom might be inclined to go. Say, if the org becomes totally sold on Bernal as the season progresses, would Bloom trade Rainiel for what looks like the next Jim Edmonds? A move that would likely alter the trajectory in one direction or the other depending on how it worked out. Or would it be trading Crooks or Pages for something comparable, which would likely barely nudge the needle if anything at all. There is a huge range of what trading from excess could look like.
Well, it took Hjerpe 74 pitches to get through 4 innings. Gave up 2 R so nudged his ERA down a tic to 6.00.
Walker waved at that pitch he waves at for a K. I think he’s up to about 6 gold chains now. He must clank running the bases. If he trips down the dugout steps it will sound like somebody dropped a drawer of silverware.
9-0 going to bottom of 6th. Hjerpe getting pecked to death each inning. A LHB pulled one down the line for an RBI double. Not a good sign if lefties are gittin him too.
I’m thinking they should shut Leahy down. Nothing left. Not sure what to do instead. Anything, I guess.
Torres had no chance against this pitcher. Waved at 3 of them. On to the 5th. Our best hope is a freak rainstorm that lasts all night. Or a power failure.
Bernal a nice job getting the bat on the ball. I’m liking his bat a lot more than the D but we’ll see.
Torres maybe a bit slow getting it back. Hot shot bounder off the wall in the LF corner scores a guy from 1st.

Another bobble by Walker. Didn’t get an error on the first one, but didn’t field it cleanly and it bounced away. This one the runner moves up.
As was the case last time, MLB.com has Leahy and Rorowire has Hjerpe. I was able to find out it is because Rorowire lists what they think is the primary pitcher if they think the scheduled starter is to be used as an opener. So no confusion, just two different things.
Also, Brian reported Baez to IL and Prieto recalled.

I do think they would move the needle next year just with internal players. The team would get better as the season progresses and assets filter up. Especially so if the roster gets bolstered by a trade at some point.
A top rated system doesn’t have to produce everything. It does have to produce excess in some areas to be traded for what is needed in other areas. And it takes quality to get quality. We will have to find out how well Bloom does at that part of the rebuild.
I wonder if it somehow stacks with the allegation floated earlier that the Dodgers hid revenue from the MLB revenue sharing calculations.
