RHP Michael McGreevy (7-9, 3.83) vs. LHP Andrew Alvarez (2-6, 3.35)
Cards.TV // KMOX // WIJRIt’s not looking good for a winning record. I believe I had estimated 78-83 wins for 2026 (which is admittedly a pretty ‘safe’ prediction) but unless Milwaukee has nothing left to play for the last three games and plays their bench against the Cardinals even getting to 78 may be a tall order.
Starting pitchers today with a combined record of an abysmal 9-15, but with a respectable combined ERA of……off the top of my head about 3.59. Something has to give today. Although it’s not a given, I believe one of these hurlers is going to be credited with a “W”. McGreevy has to be thinking about finishing the season with a 9-9 record. And with the Cardinals coming off a game where these Nats totally shellacked them……at HOME…….all signs point to a St. Louis victory today. This is not……and for all of you betting aficionados about there……this is not one of my slam dunk guaranteed bet the ranch on the game contests. But totally feel free with slapping down a cool 4 or 5 bills on our Birds to prevail this evening. I’m calling it 6-3 Cards with McGreevy picking up win #8 and JJ whacking a round tripper with bat in hand.
I was planning on a 4pm din-din up in the Dells today, but it’s been raining like crazy up here, with much more “green stuff”(as Rat would say) hanging around the region through tomorrow morning.
I had breakfast with a couple who were at the game last night. Both Cardinals fans in good standing as opposed to selfie stick wielding nacho munchers. The takeaway was its a team of youngsters searching for clubhouse leadership which has yet to emerge. That sounds right, and expected. That bears watching over the next couple years as it is a necessary element of success which can’t just be created by the system or willed into existence.
If the Cardinals do indeed suffer from a lack of leadership, which in my view they do, my plan of attack would be to begin the search for a manager.
Edit…It’s been a long time since I became entirely convinced that the Cardinals will never win anything with the current manager situated on the top step.

I am not anti=Ollie like I was. That is not to say I am pro-Ollie either. I have no idea about his leadership qualities. I am mostly OKish with his mechanics. Didn’t like seeing the pitchers slot in the lineup due to swapping out the DH, as happened a couple times recently. Don’t really like the constant lineup churn. I don’t get worked up over his pitching moves like some do. He’s got a hard job managing through a rebuild.
I’m aware that the current state of affairs regarding overall talent would pose a formidable task for any manager, but the Cardinals had plenty of talent and weren’t rebuilding in ’22 and ’23 which is when they entered into the proverbial tailspin. I know it sounds silly, but I’m entirely convinced that the current guy simply doesn’t possess the intangibles needed to provide the sort of sound leadership required for the success of a Big League baseball team. And it may sound harsh, but I’ve been watching for a minute or two and, in my estimation, he’s the worst Cardinal manager of my time as a Cardinal fan. I’ll also say that the current GM, or whatever they want to call him, hasn’t been around long enough for me to get a read on his abilities, but if he’s to piece together a successful baseball team that consistently competes for something worthwhile, his first order of business will be to place a leader on the top step of the Redbird dugout.
TD, I agree Ollie stunk a few years ago as to the mechanics in the dugout. I don’t have a feel for the intangibles. He’s only got one year head start on an outsider as far as knowing the new system and a lot of the new faces, which isn’t much advantage. And it seems like Bloom would want his own guy at some point.

LF Victor Scott LAnd in all fairness, the team was a lot better than I would have thought at season’s onset, but I’ve seen enough of him to where I just don’t feel they’ll ever win with him steering the ship. But, I thought Gorman would be good, so what the heck do I know…Haha!
All 6 postseason berths in the NL are pretty much decided with the only remaining questions being the order of the seedings but, over in barely good enough to qualify AL, it looks like the ALC will remain locked in a tie with the White Sox already hanging a 3-1 W up on the board against the Tigers in CHI and the Indians leadind the A’s 10-4. It’s still only the 4th in CLE so there’s still a possibility that some tears could be shed before that action gets placed into the books. And the dead heat in the lackluster ALW has Skippy’s Rangers out to an early 1-0 lead over the Blue Jays in Arlington and the Astros out to an identical early 1-0 lead over the Braves in HOU with both of those games being played in the home half of the 2nd.
Edit…The Brewers boast the best W/L record in either league and look to be the only team with a decent chance to close out the season with 100 W’s.
Folks may have forgotten that just six months ago, Marmol received a two-year contract extension through 2028 with a 2029 option. He’s not going anywhere.
It took McGreevy 88 pitches to get through 4 innings. Incredible. It seems like inefficiency is a recurring theme.
