As bling is fond of saying, avoiding accountability is “not a good look”, though it says postponed, not cancelled.
"A press conference was scheduled for next week to discuss the offseason. Instead, the Cardinals’ chance to outline for fans their offseason goals and strategy was postponed because the front office felt the season has been rehashed enough."
Ummm…. what??? https://t.co/iHDPUhDvlc

ParticipantPatrick McAvoy – Fan Nation
“Trade Proposal: St. Louis Cardinals get (right-handed pitcher) Logan Gilbert; Seattle Mariners get (second baseman) Nolan Gorman, (infielder/outfielder) Brendan Donovan, and (left fielder) Tyler O’Neill. The Cardinals would presumably only do this deal if they’re comfortable moving with Masyn Winn and Tommy Edman as their double-play combination.”
Ouch.
October 6, 2023 at 12:05 pm #235300I would absolutely trade Edman before I trade Donovan.
October 6, 2023 at 1:36 pm #235301Seems like a lot to give up, although Gilbert has been real good and is young. Make it Donovan, O’Neill and Carlson and I pull the trigger. Don’t want to deal both Donovan and Gorman.
October 6, 2023 at 1:37 pm #235302They won’t host a forward looking discussion because there has been enough rearward looking discussion.
Did the FO say that before or after they all piled out of the tiny car?
October 6, 2023 at 1:43 pm #235303Someone will offer a quality controllable daily lineup regular for Gilbert.
October 6, 2023 at 3:10 pm #235304Postponed today, canceled tomorrow. Bill probably told Mo something like “don’t box me in any further. My goodness, you said we’re going to acquire 3 starters. They’ll be expecting them to be good.”
October 6, 2023 at 3:11 pm #235307Someone will offer a quality controllable daily lineup regular for Gilbert.
Like Gorman? Donovan may even qualify.

jj-cf-stlParticipantFive seasons of Gorman covers four more of Gilbert.
October 6, 2023 at 4:12 pm #235311Goold mentioned that the Cardinals may look into Tyler Glasnow of the Rays. He is a talented pitcher but with a history of injuries. His 120 IP this year is the highest of his career. He has one remaining year left on his contract and it is a whopping $25M. The Rays would have to eat some of that before I would be interested.
October 6, 2023 at 4:38 pm #235312Not sure the Rays would deal Glasgow. With all of the long term injuries they have in their rotation.
October 6, 2023 at 4:42 pm #235313Gilbert would be a great get, but Seattle hasn’t even said he’s available. And the Cardinals havn’t said they would trade Gorman. But even if they did, Gorman and Donovan isn’t enough. High price. One for one, Walker or Noot. Real high price. The title of the thread is “What’s it going to take to fix the Cardinals”. It should be “What are the Cardinals willing to do to fix the mess.” Because imo what it takes is not trading our cost controlled core players and more than one year.

jj-cf-stlParticipantIP depth has to be the front burners, but if there’s a Glasgow / O’Neill framework to be had between IL stints…
October 6, 2023 at 4:53 pm #235315Not sure the Rays would deal Glasgow. With all of the long term injuries they have in their rotation.
$25M is a lot for their tiny budget though. That would represent almost 1/3 of their 2023 payroll. Maybe they plan a big payroll increase next year.
October 6, 2023 at 5:12 pm #235317Yes Gorman could headline a deal for Gilbert or similar. The price in money and talent of buying a competitive rotation is going to be over the moon.
October 6, 2023 at 5:51 pm #235318Is he worth Gorman and Donovan? Remember how we had trouble scoring runs especially after those two guys were injured? These aren’t easy decisions, even if Gilbert were available.
October 6, 2023 at 6:29 pm #235319I don’t know how we would expect to win more games by trading away 2 guys who play every day and are 2 of our most impactful offensive players for a guy who would pitch once every 5 days. That defies logic, right? Not to mention the colossal injury risk that all pitchers carry. This deal almost certainly would make the Cardinals worse. Just so we could say we had a very good pitcher on the staff. No way I’m taking that deal. But I don’t think that’s what it would take to get Gilbert either. He’s going to be expensive, but probably not that expensive.

jj-cf-stlParticipantGorman gets devalued here, some, but he’s done this before. He’s a 30-HR LH #3 batter going forward, who needs to tag on +100 AB’s next season. His power has traveled well and his rbi% is a plus.
Gormans BA and BB/K may improve, but not to a Rizzo type OBP. But, i do expect him to match Rizzo’s 5yr HR string of 32, 32, 31, 32 & 27.
Ok, back to pitchin’.
October 6, 2023 at 7:12 pm #2353211) BDW can spend money to buy pitching or
2) Mo can destroy the offense by acquiring pitching for talent, or
3) we can remain noncompetitive.
October 6, 2023 at 8:59 pm #235323Bling, I hope it’s 1, but realize it will probably be 3! My guess is they will get a couple of middle of the road starters and try and convince us they are way better, but the results on the field will be about the same! Hope I’m wrong though!
October 6, 2023 at 10:06 pm #235324Mo’s already backtracking on how many starting pitchers the Cards need. My dislike for that man increases by the day.
October 6, 2023 at 10:08 pm #235325If the Cardinals hemorrhage their offense for starting pitching, they’re gonna need supplant their offense with some free agent hitters. The Cardinals didn’t have a Top 15 offense and they’re gonna trade two of their better hitters? I’m getting a ulcer just thinking about crappy this team will be next year.
October 7, 2023 at 6:52 am #235329They are either going to have to trade good prospects or quality major leaguers to get decent pitching. Either will hurt.
October 7, 2023 at 7:16 am #235332
stlcard25ParticipantIt’s sort of amazing what barely above average starting pitching seems to be worth these days. Two starting position players for that? I’d hard pass on Gorman plus Donovan for Gilbert. Gilbert is solid but a 105 ERA+ is not worth giving up two position slots for.
Open the wallet for a starter on the market, make Imanaga your mid range guy and then sign a #4/5 type and see what you’ve got.
October 7, 2023 at 7:39 am #235335Young stuff, with years of control, proven but low mileage, are only to be had via trade. Money can’t buy everything.
