And I’m reasonably sure George could provide some sound advice. Whitey Herzog once said, “He’s one of those baseball lifers that loves to talk baseball…George Kissell is the only man I know that can talk for 15 minutes about a ground ball”…Haha!

Utility infielder from the 40s. Vinny, I think.

Funny how a hot dog costs almost double on the east side of MO compared to the west.

Man, you’re not kidding. Everything’s high as a cat’s back. I knew we were in trouble a few years ago when I had to pay over $3 for a candy bar at the gas station.

Yeah, it’s way out of hand, KCB. The other day I saw a poor guy in front of me in line at the gas station pay almost $10 for a snack size bag of Doritos and a plastic bottle of Mountain Dew.

Darvish took a turn that was more impressive than that of Wheeler in yesterday’s Mets/Phillies game. Only took him 82 pitched to work thru 7 IP’ed.

    Edit…Whoops, wrong thread.

To me this is why there are less fans in the stands than there have been. Even if these prices are set by the outside company running the concession stand, the space is being leased to them by the Cardinals. If that space is priced high enough they are charging $8 for a hotdog there’s a problem. I live 2.5 hours from Busch Stadium. I used to get over to at lease 2-3 games a year, and haven’t been to a game in 3 years. Even if the team was good it wasn’t going to make me go. It’s just the cost of trying to attend a game isn’t worth it. Especially when everything else in life has gotten stupid expensive. It’s not $3.50 for a Coke at McDonalds in my town, still like $1.20, but we’ve all felt the cost of everything on the rise. When it costs as much as it does to go to the ballpark its just not worth it, and this is coming from someone who thoroughly enjoys going. I went to the summer Cardinals and Cubs series from the time I was 1 until I was 16 as a family vacation and went to 3-4 other games though the year over those years. Friends and I would take 2 summer trips to games though high school and college. But even if the team was winning 100 games and a World Series contender, the cost to attend isn’t worth it anymore. Opening Day and playoff games are still on my bucket list, but I’ll never spend the money they want to attend those either.

As a lifelong Cardinal fan, I’m outraged Marmol is coming back. 2025 will be another wasted season. I’m not alone in these feelings. They better expect LOTS of empty seats next year.

The Cardinals have piddled around for a decade building teams designed to squeak into the playoffs and hope for a miracle. As long as the turnstiles kept turning everyone just kept on with the status quo. The fans finally decided to stop rewarding them for such efforts.

Now the team has three options:

    A. Keep on with the status quo of signing a few mid level free agents, hope that a few aging veteran stars fall into their lap, hope they catch lightning in a bottle with a few prospects, and sign a legacy player or two to a feel good extension.

    B. Open up the wallet and buy some wins like the big boys do.

    C. Implement a rebuild from the ground up.

The fans have rejected Option A, ownership will reject Option B, so that leaves Option C. We will see how they execute it and how far they go with it.

You hit the nail on the head, gscottar. With Bloom supposedly in charge of PD, they can get moving on the important part, or can they?

I say supposedly because we don’t know what “in charge of PD” actually means. Does he have free reign within the budget allocated to him? Does he have total authority over staffing, or are there sacred cows? How many and who? Does he have authority to impose new protocal and methodology? Does he have authority in the area of the MiLB rosters? Who stays, who goes, who starts where? What about minor league player acquisitions? Rule 4 draft? International? Rule 5 draft? Who gets protected? NDFAs? Indy hires? Who runs minor league ST camp? He will supposedly get new tech and make better use of what they have. Do do what? Optimize guys to launch minor leaguer mistakes? We don’t actually know anything.

All of the year-long tinkering, rebuilding, developing, salary cutting and hot dog pricing in 2025 will be for naught as long as the field manager continues to wander across the desert like a man dying of thirst while looking for an oasis, unable to decide which way to turn or which camel to ride.

I agree CiF. At the ML level the roster will be different, but I expect to see the same approach. Constant churn aimed at throwing as many statistical advantages onto the field as possible day in, day out. Young players cannot be expected to do well in that situation. Virtual players consisting of ones and zeros do fine though. I kind of think Marmol understands, but he knows his job is to make use of the output of the analytics department to inform game planning and decisions, and by now he understands how he is expected to do that. We will have to wait until next year to hope for anything different.

I don’t think it matters who the manager is in 2025 because the team will not be trying to win and they have semi-admitted it.

Mo’s direct quote: “This is a reset,” said Mozeliak during Monday’s televised news conference. “Yes, this is going to be where we’re not focusing on necessarily building the best possible roster we can. We’re also excited about the roster. We do have a bunch of young players.” Oct 1, 2024

And one must ask: What player, young or otherwise, wants to play for a team that announces it does not want to win? What’s the incentive for the hard work and effort? How can leadership (if you dare call it that) generate the enthusiasm necessary to be a championship team in 2026, 27 28 or any other year with that kind of attitude? Well, at least Mo says he’s “excited” about that.

Players have pride. They are also often committed to their organization for a number of years into the future. In the meantime, the younger players’ future salaries are directly tied to their results. So will the size of their take in free agency be related to their most recent results.

    That is plenty of incentive.

Marmol would be wise to try to rally the remaining players around the message that they are underdogs and ignored by everyone. It is a different message than “we are consistently underachieving compared to our potential”, which has been the mantra for the last two years.

The slinger dog was $13 this year in certain locations around the stadium. It was a foot long dog with hash browns on the bottom, gourmet bun chili and a fried egg on top. That was the best deal in the stadium. You’d likely complain I just want a plain old BASIC hot dog. Lol you don’t want to pay or come to the games that’s your decision.

You’ve been a lifetime (snicker) cards fan but no way you were that foolish to think he wasn’t coming back in 25.

I love how posters point out they are lifetime, BFIB entitled Cardinals fans.

I find it amusing that there’s such thing as a “slinger dog”…I’d be curious to know if a baseball fan could also indulge in something termed, slinger peanuts? At any rate, I’ll buy you a new Swiss time-piece before I’d ever ingest a serving of those things they call ballpark nachos…

Interesting piece on Bloom right after the Red Sox let him go…
