Another idea for a signing is Márquez, the former Rockie hurler. He could probably be had on a cheap minor league deal. Give him NRI. I’ve always wondered about pitchers leaving Colorado. I always wanted Gray, another former Rockie. Either would be an easy, low cost addition
January 3, 2026 at 7:24 am #298627Good ideas C27, I always liked both of them. As has been mentioned before, the biggest advantage the Cards can offer is guranteed starting innings to rebuild their careers.
Márquez was just shy of a run per inning better on the road.
Gray’s, when just glancing at a few years, wasn’t as extreme. What would a fair contract look like for Márquez? IP bonuses might be nice incentive for a guy like him. Then if traded the acquiring team could be in the hook for those.
January 4, 2026 at 12:16 am #298675Rockies need starters, Cards have several to help them rebuild…
Rockies get: Pallante, Hansen and Rajcic. They could possibly, and sadly, be their 3 best SPers
Cards get: Comp round overall pick #37 as of todayNot enough from the Cards for that pick?
January 6, 2026 at 11:02 am #298767Player A -31, RH, can play COF or 3B
Projected contract – 1/5m or 2/10m
2025 – 341 PA, 10 HR, .352 OBP , 1.1 WAR
FG Projections-406,11,.324, 1.2
BR projections -402,11,.331Player B-31 Switch hitter, never played OF
PC – 1yr between 5-15m is all I could find
2025 – 392,11, .315, 1.1
FGP – 289,12, .336,1.1
BRP -349, 12, .324Thoughts? Player A is a no doubter or even both would help the 2026 team. These contracts could be huge for not rushing guys up, they aren’t trying to win the World Series, but they can surely come up with 10-15 million bucks to spend after Donovan, Jojo and Arenado are gone.

ParticipantBTV only values a Round A comp pick at 5, and a Round B at 2.5.
Pallante alone is valued at 12.9. Hansen at 3.3 or O’Brien at 4.5 would be the ballpark. I don’t know what Rajcic is worth.
January 6, 2026 at 11:20 am #298769PadsFS
ParticipantThey also dropped Pages from 12.4 on 12/31 to 7.4 on 1/5 or a whole comp A pick without any real reason why he would drop so take that with a grain of salt.
January 6, 2026 at 12:04 pm #298770Thanks Pads, I’d do Pallante for that pick all day long though.

jj-cf-stlParticipantEach season BTV has to reset the values because the control years change. They show Pedro with 4 seasons control now.

jj-cf-stlParticipantPedro should show 5 seasons control.
January 6, 2026 at 2:27 pm #298776Cards aquire lefty reliever Bruihl from Guardians. Kent DFAd.
January 6, 2026 at 3:22 pm #298778Bruihl has pretty decent minors numbers, and his splits vs lefties are definitely impressive.
No options left so it appears they found their #2 LHRP.
I’d still love for them to sign a little bit better guy to possibly be a good trade chip at the deadline.
It would be uncalled for and foolish for them to hold onto JoJo until July 31. The injury or decline chance is too great with a reliever to take a chance of holding him until the deadline.January 11, 2026 at 10:09 am #298994I saw a Bregman article suggesting that since Boston could use both a second baseman and third baseman, a package deal for Arenado and Donovan could be possible. Given Bloom’s affinity for dealing with Boston, and probable marching orders to move NA’s contract, I expect he is hitting it hard. Some would be disappointed, using Donovan’s perceived value to buy down the cost of moving Arenado. But I think that if anybody was going to offer a compelling return for Donovan in a stand-alone deal, it would have happened already.

I don’t see any contending team trading for Arenado. I think it’s more likely Boston pursues Paredes for 3B and Donovan for 2B.

Donovan’s trade market has been held up by the Bregman decision. Now that Bregman has signed with Chicago, I would expect Donovan to be relatively quickly, unless Boston is seriously bidding on Bichette.
January 11, 2026 at 11:07 am #298997I don’t see any contending team trading for Arenado.
A contending team wouldn’t want to go the distance with NA starting at third every day, I agree. But he has an NTC, wants to go to a contender and Bloom probably has to move him. So he is probably going to a contending team. That doesn’t mean he will be their starting third baseman all season, or at all. It does mean it will cost a lot to move him, and that cost can be covered with cash and talent, in some proportion. I absolutely see that deal happening, especially since it is Boston. It may be Bloom’s only remaining chance.
January 11, 2026 at 11:54 am #298999Boston has former top 100 prospect Marcelo Mayer on the roster, and has Mikey Romero at AAA (Boston’s #6). Simply no need for a declining Arenado, unless the Cardinals are including Donovan for a bucket of balls. Supposedly, the Cardinals trades for Contreras and Gray were about saving money, and the Cardinals trade of Donovan is about maximizing the prospect haul.
January 11, 2026 at 12:29 pm #299000I could see Arenado going to Boston but if the Cardinals were smart they would not include Donovan. That would defeat the whole purpose of the rebuild assuming it was really about rebuilding the system with young high end talent.

Why do you see the Red Sox preferring Arenado over Marcelo Mayer, Kristian Campbell & Mikey Romero?

He is more of a proven quantity. The Sox are in win now mode and relying on rookies or near rookies is risky. We all know that Arenado is diminished offensively but he is still a very good defender and can be had cheap.
The Sox have totally bungled 3B. They had poor communication with Devers, moved him to 1B/DH to make room for Bregman, and now have neither. Instead of Arenado or the youngsters a more likely scenario is they get involved with Bichette.
January 11, 2026 at 2:58 pm #299004He is more of a proven quantity.
Is everybody aware of how age affects a player’s ability on the field?
What does the Age 35 diagram tell us in this model? 2 WAR Seasons by Age Bracket
or
So, everybody around here believes:
1) Arenado is bad, and his contract is underwater, but other teams should want to trade for him because he is good
2) The Cardinals have better options led by failed former Top 100 prospect Nolan Gorman entering his fifth season in the majors
3) Even though Arenado has already experienced age-related decline, and is already one of the worst major-league third basemen in the league, he will not further decline in his age-35 season
4) Arenado, despite being worse than Gorman, is better than the former Top 100’s in Boston and Seattle respectively, even though they have only had one season in the majors
5) Arenado is also better than the top prospects in AAA for each of those teamsI am just not seeing any logic in these arguments.
January 11, 2026 at 3:05 pm #299005For all the people saying Boston & Seattle should trade for Arenado, if you were the GM of those clubs, and you were making $1 million per year to be the GM, would you risk your job and trade for Arenado or would you run with your rookies and prospects?
January 11, 2026 at 3:19 pm #299006The idea would be take Arenado to get Donovan as the every day second baseman. Pay some of Arenado’s salary while Donovan is cheap. By the time you have to pay Donovan big money, you are done paying Arenado. It is not going to cost a GM his job to obtain a quality second baseman at an affordable cost. Arenado can help a new guy learn the position.

I have no interest in Seattle but if I were the GM in Boston my plan for 3B would be:
1. Sign Bichette
2. Trade for Hoerner
3. Sign Suarez
4. Trade for Paredes
5. Trade for Donovan
6. Trade for Arenado
7. Play the rookiesDonovan is not the best fit for Boston 3B anyway because I would imagine they would prefer a RH 3B to replace Bregman.
And I will reiterate that the Cardinals should not give Donovan away for nothing but Arenado salary relief. That would be Mo level dumbness.
January 11, 2026 at 3:32 pm #299008The Cardinals need a RH bat who can play the OF. Three that make sense to me are:
1. Miguel Andujar
2. Austin Hays
3. Harrison BaderJanuary 11, 2026 at 3:44 pm #299009I like andujar or hays from your list and I would add Rhys Hoskins, he can play left field as well as backup 1st.
January 11, 2026 at 4:02 pm #299010You are correct. Hoskins would work as well.
