jj-cf-stlParticipantBill got the Goldy decision right by not forcing it. Aren’t we there with Nado too?
January 7, 2025 at 3:22 pm #274500I don’t see how trading Nootbaar solves anything.
He’s only estimated to make $2.8 million, and the downfall of our team last year was the outfield. Nootbaar & Donovan were the only ones that produced.
It depends how desperate BDW is to shave money. Burleson will make $2M less than Noot. Gorman will make $2M less than Noot.

Probably not apples to apples. It was easier to run out the clock on Goldy although I agree it was smart not to prematurely offer an extension. With Nado the clock is ticking. If they can’t move him soon then all of the Plan B guys will need to be shown the door.
January 7, 2025 at 3:25 pm #274502He can save more money, and better position the team to win in 2026 & beyond, by trading Fedde & Helsley, who are not going to help the team win beyond 2025.
Burleson does not belong in the outfield, unless you like watching the other team score runs.
Gorman does not belong in the outfield at all.

jj-cf-stlParticipantThe clock ticking on Arenado has another 10 months. By then is fine. The optimum time to acquire Nado is after 18mil is wore off by the deadline, from a buyers standpoint. It will happen.

Trading Fedde and Helsley does not prevent a Noot trade. BDW might want to do all three.
Burleson’s ability to play the OF doesn’t have anything to do with saving money.
I wasn’t implying Gorman would be in the OF. He would be at 2B and Donovan in LF if Noot was traded.

jj-cf-stlParticipantLast I heard we are standing pat 😀
Seriously GS, do you really want to sell off all the way back to Pallante, when all that is needed is months?
January 7, 2025 at 6:37 pm #274512If BDW needs to save $2 million that badly that he is willing to trade one of two capable outfielders on the team, he should first look to pay down $9.5 million of Matz’ salary and $13 million of Mikolas’ contract. Neither of those moves hurt the 2026 team, and both save more than trading Nootbaar.

jj-cf-stlParticipantWe have 3yrs control of Noot and Donny. If this reset goes well, I have entertained their possible extensions. Of course if Libby, Gorman and Walker bomb, you almost have to trade Donny/Noots value back to a more distant core. But you don’t have to yet, not to reclaim bench money. Quick cash is FA-to-be Feede and keep the pair. Add a AAA SP.

Is that what I want? No, I was trying to interpret what BDW might want. If it were me I would focus the rebuild on the position players. I wouldn’t have a problem with keeping Fedde, Mikolas, and Matz for four months then try to ship them out at the deadline. But it isn’t my budget.

That makes sense to me but again I doubt it is an either/or situation. I think BDW wants to move as many salaries as possible.
The problem with Noot is that he is so fragile. If he sneezes too hard he is likely to crack three ribs. He might survive 2025 but eventually the Cardinals are going to grow tired of paying an escalating arbitration salary to an average player who is routinely injured.

No way would I extend Noot. See above regarding his fragility.
I can see Donnie and Winn getting extensions. They look to be the new core going forward combined with whichever youngsters can produce.

jj-cf-stlParticipantBader, O’Neill, Edman, Carlson, Donovan, Nootbaar. Outfielders, what are you going to do? Always injured.
23′ & 24′ PA totals:
1023 Donovan
942 Burleson
908 Nootbaar
781 Bader
739 O’Neill
681 Edman
520 CarlsonWho has more PA’s the last 2 seasons? Contreras or Nootbaar?
Some positions are tough to stay healthy at, unless an outfielder is a Walker / Burly type. Even a Matt Holliday type outfielder is limited enough it helps prevent injuries.Yep, Noot is often injured.
Is there a plan C? If plan B happens, and then plan A drops in Bills lap before opening day, Bill will need a plan C to prevent a battle for 30th with the A’s.
(btw, plan B wrecks expected stadium revenue, plan A doesn’t)
January 9, 2025 at 3:35 pm #274585Ranking ahead of Bader, O’Neill, Edman, and Carlson in that category is not much of an achievement. As a work colleague of mine says “two times zero is still zero.”
I hope Noot can finally put together an injury free year but I am not counting on it and I wouldn’t extend him until he can prove it.
January 9, 2025 at 6:22 pm #274599
jj-cf-stlParticipantI don’t think your math works, but yes, outfielders are the worst!
O’Neill’s FA status didn’t take much of a hit for his “fragility”. It’s as if mlb expects it.
January 9, 2025 at 9:13 pm #274608I’ve about run out of hot stove banter. When do pitchers and catchers report?
January 10, 2025 at 7:43 am #274615
jj-cf-stlParticipantRumor has it, Bill will be delaying ST for a month, in a cost cutting effort. Poor Bill.
January 10, 2025 at 8:44 am #274619Its a genius idea to reduce ST injuries.
January 11, 2025 at 12:03 am #274660According to Baseball Trade Values, the highest valued Cardinals are Nootbaar and Herrera. I would be more than willing to see both traded because of that value, (ya gotta give to get). Noot because of value/injuries and Herrera because of value/and he’s a catcher that can’t throw and can’t play any other position than DH.
Keep pretty much anybody under 25, (not counting Herrera), anyone else is fair game.
Liberator, Walker, Winn and Gorman were rushed thru the system. So far, Winn appears to be a hit, others have been up and down, but are still young. I would have preferred they work there way up. Especially Liberator, being a pithcer, but Mo had to prove he didn’t get fleeced in the Arozarena trade.
I may be beating a dead horse, but this team needs to get younger and more athletic. A full tear down would have been better. In my opinion, Mo’s ego can’t have his last year be a bottom of the barrel finish. Like always, play to be just good enough to not totally, well, you know…
Any trade where they can pick up Competitive Value A or B picks is a bonus.
January 11, 2025 at 10:59 am #274677Good post C4Ever. I agree with all of that.
January 11, 2025 at 11:01 am #274678O’Neill’s FA status didn’t take much of a hit for his “fragility”. It’s as if mlb expects it.
Just because the Orioles made a bad decision doesn’t mean we should. Let’s copy the smart teams.
January 11, 2025 at 1:24 pm #274693
jj-cf-stlParticipantThe BAL outcome w/O’Neill is irrelevant. His fragility has already landed that contract.
Twice we’ve had clubs trade for an injured player (Bader/Edman) and they didn’t bat an eye. Mlb clubs expect fragility from outfielders.
January 11, 2025 at 3:05 pm #274702In 2024 Noot ranked 74th in PA’s among OF’s, which isn’t good. I guess we could consider that an outlier or small sample but he needs a healthier 2025 if he wants more than just an arb bump.
January 11, 2025 at 3:44 pm #274707
jj-cf-stlParticipantYep, often injured.
January 11, 2025 at 3:48 pm #274708Well, I don’t expect him to suffer rib fractures diving for a ball every year.
