We know the Cardinals are shopping Nolan Arenado. Here are the questions:
1. How much money do you think the Cardinals should eat to trade Arenado? Cots shows him making:
– $32 million in 2025, with $5 million paid by Colorado
– $27 million in 2026, with $5 million paid by Colorado
– $15 million in 20272. How much do you think the Cardinals will actually pay down to trade Arenado?
3. Where do you see him landing?
4. What kind of prospect return are you expecting?
5. What should the Cardinals do with the savings (keep it, invest in players for 2025, invest in minor leagues, invest in stadium, etc)?
November 10, 2024 at 3:01 pm #271546LA, my suggestion is to start a new Arenado trade thread with your last post or resurrect the prior thread on the subject.
November 10, 2024 at 3:31 pm #271550I will post my responses here then move them to the appropriate thread when necessary.
2. I think they will pay down $10M in 2025, $5M in 2026, and $0 in 2027.
3. I could see him landing with the Yankees, Dodgers, Mets, or Astros. Just a guess.
4. Probably not a huge return. Maybe one top 15 pick and one top 30 pick from the other team’s system.
5. Well if they invest it in 2025 players it should be on cheap one year deals. This is not the time to be signing expensive free agents to long term deals. It wouldn’t bother me if they invested the majority of the money in minor league player development. That is going to be a good long term investment for us.

jj-cf-stlParticipantMatt Vierling (Tigers) is a target Mo should consider. 3B/OF, and is CF friendly. FA 2028.
I doubt Arenado allows a DET trade, but the Tigers hope to sign a “right hand bat” for balance, and a SP, as their stated priorities.
Fedde was good vs DET last season.
November 12, 2024 at 8:11 pm #271637DO NOT trade Arenado.
November 14, 2024 at 9:15 pm #271760So, there is one solution to trading Arenado that might work…
The Cardinals don’t historically eat a lot of money to move players, but the contract they signed with Arenado and the trade they orchestrated with Colorado seems to suggest they might be willing to pay $5 million per year to trade Arenado…
But that still means they likely won’t get much of a prospect return, and very few clubs will take on his salary in 2025.
But what if the Cardinals attach Alec Burleson as well?
It declutters the Cardinals roster of people with no defensive value, lowers the amount the Cardinals have to kick in to facilitate a trade and increases the quality of prospects coming back…
November 14, 2024 at 11:15 pm #271768No solution for Arenado…he should be the Cardinals 3B next year.
November 21, 2024 at 8:35 pm #272155I am 65, been a Cardinals fan for 60 years. Once a player is a Cardinal, I am a fan for life.
It seems there is a lot of we can’t trade player X, especially Lars and Ivan. I want them to do great, but they have more trade value than any other players on the roster other than possibly Winn i believe (53 / 32).
I did a comparison between Noot and Tyler O. on Baseball Reference and Noot is a slightly less injured, less power hitting player with a better OBP version of TO. I see him as a good but not great fielding 15/60/.260 player. I would trade him in a heartbeat.
Ivan can hit, no doubt. He can’t throw anybody out to save his life and has no other position to play Was his arm injured this year? Not that I ever heard. I would trade him in a heartbeat also. Sign someone like Jansen or yes, Carson Kelly for a year or 2 Better fielding, decent hitter and wait for Bernal or Crooks.
Is there anybody you flat out wouldn’t trade? My list right now, Matthews, Davis, Weatherholt, and a few other minor league pitchers and Winn. (Okay, if the Mariner’s offered my their entire starting rotation…). Other than that anybody is fair game as long as Mo isn’t the person deciding.
November 22, 2024 at 10:09 am #272171They can’t keep Arenado and go into the seaason doing nothing and with the $$ they will have tied into the current roster they won’t do crap in offseason and they will be a bad team just like they were last year…
November 23, 2024 at 8:40 am #272207After the non-tender deadline there are some new free agents available.

November 23, 2024 at 8:43 am #272208And I would add Patrick Wisdom to the list who could be of interest.
November 27, 2024 at 10:29 am #272457A good comeback candidate in my opinion is Luis Robert. I would be looking to work on a deal to acquire him from the White Sox. His value is low right now, and I believe he only has one guaranteed year left, with a couple of clubs option seasons.
November 27, 2024 at 12:27 pm #272470
cardsfan64ParticipantThe White Sox are asking for the moon to get Robert. Have to consider the risk/reward and who all you would have to give up.
November 27, 2024 at 5:39 pm #272484Mo isn’t going to land any hot prospect future impact players by trade. We aren’t going to be any good until a productive pipeline is spewing out roster pieces and trade goods.
November 30, 2024 at 2:01 pm #272582“The White Sox are asking for the moon to get Robert. Have to consider the risk/reward and who all you would have to give up.”
Yeah, don’t go overboard for Robert. But his value should not be at the “moon” level. If that is the case the White Sox will have him next year. But if he can be had for a couple of middling prospects, then go for it. Something like we got for Ty O’Neill. But other clubs are usually not that dumb.
December 1, 2024 at 11:53 am #272609I could see Donovan moved if they can, a package of Donovan and Helsley could be pretty darn good….
December 1, 2024 at 11:54 am #272610I hate to admit this, but, I have completely out of hope for anything this off-season that will make a real impact going forward.
That being said the one thing that I hope for is a long-term extension for Winn. Through arb and 2-3 options?
Maybe even Burly. He was not as awful as everyone proclaimed him to be in the outfield this year, I’m not a professional scout, but he wasn’t that awful and he’s got a absolute canon for an arm.
December 1, 2024 at 4:55 pm #272623Maybe a knee jerk sign would work out better than it did with DeJong.
Who would we keep to platoon with Burly, and who would be the late inning defensive replacement?

jj-cf-stlParticipantThis org has a strong recent history of trading away arb players like Edman, O’Neil, Bader, etc.
If that trend continues with Donny, Noot, Pallante, etc. in the short term, it’s a rebuild centered on long term drafting.December 23, 2024 at 8:36 am #273756

Who needs to add?December 23, 2024 at 8:37 am #273757Interesting, but why add another second baseman? The Cardinals are loaded with them already. Would a reliever be a better fit for the Cardinals?
December 23, 2024 at 8:42 am #273759
jj-cf-stlParticipantI chose players I thought LA may want us to take.

Who needs to add?Dodgers say no. Lux produces nearly the same output for one-tenth the cost.
December 23, 2024 at 9:40 am #273769
stlcard25ParticipantI think the Dodgers probably would want a little more, either in cash or a prospect. But it wouldn’t be a bad bet on a return for St Louis. Possible future rotation guy, and Lux could be used to free up Donovan to move around the IF/OF.

jj-cf-stlParticipantHelsley as the sweetener for a club who eats costs and grins. Take what they offer. We are a feeder club now.
