In my big imaginations ideal offseason, they trade O’neill and Woodford for Matt Boyd and then sign Keuchel. That would leave the Cards with 6 guys for 5 spots, but not very often does someone not get hurt or fall off a production cliff by the time the season rolls around.
I’m in favor of them trading Mikolas to a team who needs an innings eater. I don’t think with his contract he would bring much, if anything back in trade, but if we could get Boyd and Keuchel, who are both lefties which they desperately need.
Keuchel “the GB artist” would be a great add if the money is right. With the infield defense, excluding Carpenter, I’m on the groundball artist Keuchel’s bandwagon.
Boyd showed the first half of last year that he can be better than his end of the year results. Even at the highest level, when your team loses 114 games, you can’t possibly have the same competitive nature as being in a playoff race.

stlcard25ParticipantOne person calls Rendon to the Cards. No one predicts Betts to be traded at all. Cole is slotted in under $300M.
November 27, 2019 at 10:07 am #115704There was a suggestion in the Derrick Goold chat about trading Fowler and the Cards eat 5M of his salary per year (10M total). I’m guessing the assumption was that he’d waive his NTC to join Maddon.
Of all of the ideas out there, that might actually make a lot of sense to get him to waive the NTC and considering they have Trout, Adell coming up and then apparently not much else, they might bite.
I would argue they would want the Cards to kick in a bit more, say 6M a year, leaving them paying 2/21. I can’t imagine that the production of Arozarena, Thomas, etc wouldn’t put up at least equal numbers if not better.
In return, they have a prospect named William English who is their 29th ranked guy on MLB. He’s a 2 way player who was just drafted and is likely 4 years away, but if his hitting or pitching falls off, he could flip solely to the other one. Meaning, he’s a major lottery ticket.

stlcard25ParticipantBusy day for the Padres…like the Pomeranz signing and they needed some depth in the rotation. The Brewers also got Eric Lauer.
The San Diego Padres have traded second baseman Luis Urias to the Milwaukee Brewers for outfielder Trent Grisham, a source familiar with the deal tells ESPN.

#Padres in agreement with free-agent reliever Drew Pomeranz, pending physical, sources tell The Athletic.

November 27, 2019 at 1:52 pm #115711The Cardinals ownership made roughly $6.4 million by making it to the second round of the playoffs this year (imputing from the $9.7 million the players made on 60% of gate revenue).
They should be willing to invest that $6.4 million to trade away Fowler to give them the best chances of making the playoffs the next two years.
As for Fowler to the Angels, I don’t see it. They released Kole Calhoun because they didn’t want to pay him $13 million, given they expect Adell to take over RF. Calhoun > Fowler. The Cardinals would probably have to eat $8-10 million per year to make him somewhat palatable to the Angels, and I don’t think they will eat that much money.
November 27, 2019 at 2:02 pm #115714I think if I could get the Angels to pay $6 mil. per yr for a total of 12 then I would do the deal. The Cardinals would still owe him around 20 Mil. but that is something they will have to live with.
November 27, 2019 at 2:12 pm #115719MPWR, most notably for the young guys who are making the minimum, that is one heck of a chunk of change!
Your also probably right on the Folwer delima/issue/disaster. If they can just find someone to take him where he agrees and they can free up around 10M, that money along with any money they can pry from DeWitt could go a long way considering there are better options internally at 550k for the OF positions. Or better yet, DeWitt could decide to make a profit that is more of an average number instead of being at the top of MLB owners in profit and put a little better lineup together.
November 27, 2019 at 4:09 pm #115728Not that long ago, this was Brett Cecil.
There were two left-handed relief pitchers who were clearly valued above their peers this offseason: Will Smith and Drew Pomeranz. Smith got $40M from Atlanta, Pomeranz $34M from San Diego. Neither will close. Relief prices at the top end of the market remain incredibly strong.

November 27, 2019 at 4:15 pm #115730I think, if Fowler waived his NTC, which is a big if, it would take including a prospect along with him. But in that regard, we will have to add Julio Rodriguez, Herera, Carlson obviously, Torres, Rondon, Oviedo, Elledge, and Whitley, so we will be forced to make moves, even if all are not protected.
November 27, 2019 at 4:44 pm #115731Some of these posters are comical. If anyone thinks that Junior feels any compulsion to invest that 6.4 million in new talent or if Junior is ever going to reduce his profit margin to put more talent in the field…does not know Junior. They won the division and the NLDS. That means nothing to me but to Junior it validates doing nothing and spending nothing. So, you would do well to abandon your schemes and dreams of Junior being a big time player this off-season. The roster is largely set for next year. You can make out your opening day line-up today.
November 27, 2019 at 4:53 pm #115732MLB has a best at each position voting up, there are roughly 6 options for each position. Not a single Cardinal was nominated for position players and only Flaherty for pitchers. Anyone feel as if a shakeup isn’t highly needed?
I was surprised Wong wasn’t listed, but this appeared to be considering the bat only, and they options were all better.
November 29, 2019 at 9:11 am #115765Give this article a quick read, frightening to say the least about how awful his “rebound” season was and the lack of hope moving forward.
https://www.101espn.com/2019/11/19/bernies-offseason-audit-cardinals-outfielder-dexter-fowler/
Hopefully there are only three outcomes for Fowler in 2020.
3) Accept that he will be coming off the bench and he doesn’t get playing time due to his contract – 16.5M not well spent
2) Accept any possible trade to a place he can play everyday that the Cards can come up with to shed a portion of his salary – There has to be a way to make this work
1) Retire – I vote for thisNovember 29, 2019 at 10:26 am #115768
stlcard25Participant1) Retire – I vote for this
How much money does he forfeit in this case? That seems unrealistic. At this point, he’s what he is… average or so with the bat and average to below with the glove. If he hits like he did in the second half, he has value to the team. It remains to be seen if he’ll be able to do that.
November 29, 2019 at 11:53 am #115775If Fowler plays the Cardinals this year he should be an LH bat off the bench and if he starts it should be against RH pitching.
November 29, 2019 at 12:29 pm #115779Well there is what we WANT to happen and what will ACTUALLY happen. The odds are high that Fowler and Carp are in the opening day lineup. Heck Cecil may be in the bullpen.
November 29, 2019 at 1:12 pm #115781Intra-division trades are not common but Starling Marte could be available and would look good in the Cardinals OF and he has two years of control remaining. Would Knizer, O’Neill, and Adolis be enough for the Pirates?
November 29, 2019 at 2:28 pm #115782
stlcard25ParticipantI thought about Marte too, Gscottar. I would guess that the Pirates want young controllable MLB type talent and two of those guys fit that bill. The Marte from a couple of years ago was an under the radar star but I’m not sure that 2020 Marte will be more than a solid LFer. Still, I’d explore the option for a trade.
November 29, 2019 at 8:15 pm #115786How about Jose Martinez and another lesser MILB prospect to the Indians for Logan Allen LHP?
November 30, 2019 at 11:34 am #115792GameCard, I like that thought and him ending up in CLE is a good fit. Unfortunately I don’t think that gets it done. Maybe a prospect in the Cards 10-15 range would do it?
November 30, 2019 at 12:00 pm #115793I like the Indians idea too but I would get greedy and go after Brad Hand. Would have to sweeten the pot obviously.
November 30, 2019 at 1:03 pm #115798Right now, Jose Martinez to Cleveland seems like a good landing spot for him, since Carlos Santana prefers to play 1B than to DH.
I would be happy if the Cardinals were able to trade him for international cap space and relief from his salary (to open up playing time for the outfielders that can actually play in the outfield).
If they are going to try to package him for Logan Allen, I would think they would have to include at least Oviedo or Woodford going back.
While it would be nice to get Brad Hand as well, I think that would require an overpay in terms of prospects to get him at this point. Cleveland might want to hold onto him until the trade deadline to see where they are in the standings. Right now, they look to be the best team in the AL Central since Minnesota lost so many players.
November 30, 2019 at 1:32 pm #115800If Woodford would be the one going to Cleveland, I don’t have a problem with that. His best use is as a trade chip. I personally feel Oviedo could be better in the long run.
November 30, 2019 at 2:12 pm #115804I am good with Woodford and Martinez for Allen.
November 30, 2019 at 4:26 pm #115805Good idea guys. That is the kind of under the radar type of move the front office needs to be looking for this winter. Wouldn’t add a penny to payroll either.
