Wow, that is a bold move by the Yanks. Can we try that with Cecil? lol
November 22, 2019 at 2:33 pm #115349At this point, are the only options to go below the 40 man roster a non tender, trade or release?
November 22, 2019 at 2:55 pm #115351Yeah not sure how smart of a move it is by the Yanks, but time will tell, they could look bad for trying to do it and still have to pay his salary…
November 22, 2019 at 4:12 pm #115352FWIT. The ‘guaranteed contract’ was originally born out of negotiations between Scott Boras and George Steinbrenner. I don’t remember the year or the player’s name. But as I remember, Boras was representing a pitcher and had just negotiated what was at that time a mega-contract. I want to say it was something like $1.4M paid over 3 years. The rationale for needing the guaranty was that the player could be the target of a hit man if his boss got into some kind of financial trouble. Steinbrenner scoffed at such a crazy idea, and apparently without further consideration, agreed to the first guaranteed contract.

What do you mean by saying “at this point”? Nothing is different now than any other time, except that during the season, a 60-day IL move also applies.
There is one other choice you forgot to mention, an outright to the minor leagues.
November 22, 2019 at 5:53 pm #115358Sorry Brian,I should have been more clear. I was curious about what can happen between the Rule 5 roster deadline, and the Ruoe 5 draft. So everything is still in play other than the 60 day DL moves? So it is the deadline to protect eligible players?
November 22, 2019 at 6:02 pm #115359Right. The Nov. 20 deadline is for putting draft eligible players on, not taking them off. Your question was about taking them off.
Anyone removed from the 40-man (or a free agent signed to a minor league contract) between Nov. 20 and Dec. 12 (Rule 5 draft day) becomes eligible for the draft.
November 23, 2019 at 8:43 am #115556There are always teams looking for cheap and decent back up middle infielders. At last check I don’t believe anyone was 100% certain in regards to Sosa having an option year left, but regardless:
First off, I take any and all “projections” with a huge grain of salt. Based on BR, here are the projections for the Cards options
Munoz in 323 PA: .273/.334/.423 for an OPS of .757
Sosa in 205 PA: .258/.337/.451 for an OPS of .788
As a comparison, Edman in 375 PA: .289/.345/.484 for a .829 OPSWith the flexibility of Edman, and Sosa being able to cover the MI and likely put up similar numbers, it might be time to trade Munoz. He wouldn’t bring much back, but a decent lottery ticket prospect that doesn’t need to be on the 40 man would work? And it would open up a 40 man spot that can be used in a lot of different ways.
November 23, 2019 at 11:09 am #115571I am totally with you Chitown. I am a big fan of Sosa and would like to see him on the 26 man roster. We all know DeJong needs more rest and I like Sosa’s combination of glove work and decent bat. Munoz can hit but his glove makes me shudder. I don’t know if he would fetch much but we should find out.

To piggyback on that thought I noticed the Marlins have DFA’d Wei-Yin Chen despite owing him $22M. They probably have a stronger argument to make about protecting someone from the Rule 5 draft than the Cardinals have or maybe they are going to take a play out of the Yankees playbook and just not pay him. Jeter is an ex-Yankee after all.
November 23, 2019 at 12:02 pm #115577I don’t like Munoz glove, either. His bat wasn’t as exciting as it was his first year with the club. I’d be fine with trading him and giving Sosa a chance, especially with Edman available as a super-utility player. But if they don’t trade Munoz this offseason, and if he outperforms his competition at spring training, then he’s on the 26-man roster for another season.
I think more teams should find a way to not pay a player who has a guaranteed contract, but is no help to his team, and maybe even detrimental to his team. I know ‘guaranteed’ means ‘guaranteed’. But justice should come into play somewhere, also.
November 23, 2019 at 12:13 pm #115578I would take Sosa over Munoz.
November 23, 2019 at 1:35 pm #115584Looking at the projections on BR, they are VERY concerning to say the least…. take a look at the projected OPS’s.
Yadi – .728
Goldy – .871
Wong – .768
DeJong – .789
Carp – .803 (That’s shocking, highly doubtful in my opinion, but encouraging)
Edman – .829The infield isn’t all that bad, if they had a couple of high producing OF’s, but the OF’s, which, is the sad part of this post.
Fowler – .738 That does not come close to cutting it for a corner OF….
JMart – .799
O’neill – .786
Bader – .740
Arozarena – .785
Thomas – .849 He has been my pick to be the starting CF in 2020 since Aug/Sept, and the projections agree with meI was a non-supporter of putting Edman in the OF, but without any moves, I could see that happening more and more.
As far as FA’s go, a 1 year deal for Corey Dickerson as a gap filler until Carlson is up, with some experience is really the only decent option out there, the last thing they need is someone like Calhoun who’s average would likely end up around .230. The 35 HR last year is exciting, but the rest of his skill set is not.
Are there any LHH OF’s that anyone has come up with as a target? There don’t seem to be many realistic options.

David Peralta would be a good trade target.
November 24, 2019 at 11:37 am #115608Here’s a Korean LHP that probably wouldn’t break the bank
November 24, 2019 at 1:46 pm #115614Has a Dexter Fowler for Ian Kennedy trade been discussed?
They both make an identical $16.5 million this coming year.
Since this is Kennedy’s final year in KC, the Cardinals could give them back Jose Martinez to function as their cost-controlled DH. Maybe also pay $500k of Fowler’s salary this year and $8 million next year.
Or send them back prospects like Adolis Garcia + Ramon Urias.
November 24, 2019 at 11:26 pm #115630MPWR, good match on paper, but the Fowler NTC likely squashes that. At this point in his career, zero chance he wants to go to a tanking team in Kansas City which is possibly less appealing overall as a city than STL.
November 25, 2019 at 8:48 am #115641The money is the obvious issues with any trades of Fowler, Cecil, Carpenter, etc., but the no trade clauses really squash any movement. I wish our front office didn’t give out extensions, NTC’s and big money like they were candy. I would think a no trade clause has a value, and should be in exchange for less money per year.
November 25, 2019 at 9:31 am #115643I like the bad contract for bad contract idea. I don’t know if the Royals or Fowler would have any interest though.
Some ideas I have been kicking around:
CMart and JMart to Cleveland for Brad Hand. (Savings of $7M to the Cards)
Gant, Adolis, and Munoz to Arizona for Robbie Ray. (Additon of $7M to the Cards)Those two trades would be a net wash to the Cardinal payroll, would solidify the bullpen and solidify the rotation. I’m not sure that package would get Ray. We might have to sweeten it.
As for OF we just go to ST and let our plethora of internal candidates battle it out and see who emerges. We would also hopefully have some payroll left for a July bat addition if necessary.
November 25, 2019 at 9:41 am #115645As much as I want to see CMart in a different uniform, preferably a shiny Padres one, I don’t think the Hand trade is enough for him.
November 25, 2019 at 9:51 am #115646Yeah you are probably right. We should probably ask for a prospect also.
I just don’t feel great about our bullpen with Hick’s outlook fuzzy for 2020. I have wanted Hand for years. If that doesn’t work out we should explore a trade with the Mets for Diaz.November 25, 2019 at 10:32 am #115649Don’t get me wrong gscottar, I’m 1000% on board with getting Hand. I also think trading CMart for a short term closer and a prospect is the best way to go. Hand also has a team option for 2021 which I didn’t realize.
My thought it with Hicks out until mid year, Gallegos has the stuff be he potentially needs another year of MLB experience before he could step in (my guess is that he ends up the closer on opening day because Mo doesn’t think outside the box to make trades).
In order of preference:
1) Kirby Yates and Luis Patino for CMart and Ponce
2) Brad Hand and Triston McKenzie for CMart and JMart
3) Edwin Diaz for Harrison Bader and Oviedo
4) Ken Giles for JMart and OviedoNovember 25, 2019 at 10:37 am #115650Bigger than Fowler going to a tanking team would be Fowler playing for Matheny again. I don’t see him waving his ntc to do that.
November 25, 2019 at 10:59 am #115651
stlcard25ParticipantI don’t get the order of preference there…Yates is the 3rd best closer of the 4 listed (Diaz #1, Hand #2, Yates #3, Giles #4) and we give up by far the least replaceable piece to get him. To me, even the “lazy drunk” Carlos is better than any starter we are likely to pick up on the market (or Ray, ftm). Or are you thinking we should bank on Gomber, Reyes, Gant and Ponce to fill that 5th starter role?
November 25, 2019 at 11:18 am #115652Stl25, in my scenario Ray would join the rotation to take CMart’s place. I know your hackles get up anytime a CMart trade is proposed. He is obviously your favorite player. I am not thinking the Cards should actively try to move him but I am just trying to think of ways to move salary in order to find other improvements. His $11.7M salary should be much easier to move than Carp or Fowler. I would much rather have Hand/Ray vs. CMart/JMart/Gant/prospects with the salary being the same.
If DeWitt would green light the FO to add salary then we wouldn’t have to contemplate moving CMart.
