If you want to take the roster view, they declined Wong before 2021 and non-tendered Brebbia, but acquired Arenado for the 2021 season in trade.

If they are “cost cutting” for 2021 how can they afford Nolans 35mil salary?

COL paid 15mil of Nolans 2021 and Nolan deferred the other 20mil. Carp was guaranteed in 2021 and needed benched.

Sorry, I’m not off base. Carpenter was rewarded with an extension after an excellent season. The Cardinals are generous with legacy type players. If Edman is performing, they won’t just drop him to save money.

Gorman is not blocking Donovan, Donovan is our DH, and Oli likes his D flexibility to rest other players from the field (while they DH).

JJ, I am assuming that Yepez/Burleson will get most of the DH at bats in 2023.

A main question is whether they will have Gorman penciled into the starting 2B job going into ST. My guess is yes.

Excluding the COVID year, Wong’s last full-season OPS+ for the Cardinals was 108 (in 2019). That is exactly the same as Edman delivered in 2022. Their bWARs were 5.1 and 6.3, respectively.

We have 4 middle infielders and only need 3 plus a depth guy at AAA. It might be decided not to eat $9M and retain DeJong. That would mean they could trade from a surplus in the middle infield. Not that Mo would want to as they are all very useful in various roles. But we need a catcher and starter more than we need 4 middle infielders. So I wouldn’t pencil anyone anywhere just yet.

GS, Yepez and Burleson couldn’t even make the roster when everyone was healthy. I don’t think they’re going to bench Gorman or Donovan for either of those two.

They didn’t make the roster because of Pujols and Dickerson. Both of them are history.

I have Yepez / Burleson as bench bats, at best. Once injuries set in they could see more field time, and I’d prefer they didn’t.

I’m all for a .300+ hitter who only strikes out 15% of the time.

Ignoring the deferrals, the Rockies are paying the Cardinals $51M total for Arenado. It was $14.4M in 2021 (off $26M), $5.6M in 2022 (off $35M) and 16.0M in 2023 (off $35M).

    guaranteed payments: $14,429,500 in 2021, $16M in 2023
conditional payments: $5,570,500 in 2022 and $5M each in 2024-26 if Arenado does not exercise right to opt out

Correct. I rounded, just to show they acquired Arenado in 2021 at little to no cost. If the discussion had been about Nolan, I’d have been more specific, but it was really about the 2021 player budget and how that effected Wong.

Don’t like to go back to the OF, but let’s look at the cold hard facts –

    O’Neill – .228/.308/.392/.700/14 HRs
    Carlson – .236/.316/.380/.695/8 HRs
    Nootbaar – .228/.340/.448/.788/14 HRs
    Yepez – .253/.296/.447/.742/12 HRs
    Burleson – .188/.264/.271/.535/1 HR

Can you go into 2023 without an addition of some kind?

bccran…In my view, you can take Yepez off the list as an OF’er. I think he’s an unacceptable risk anywhere on the field besides the batter’s box. Carlson is the guy that was the biggest disappointment in ’22. I’m becoming accustomed to O’Neill being skint-up and Nootbar gets a pass from Cardinal fans because, well…He’s Nootz. Burleson doesn’t look ready to me, but I saw less than 50 AB’s. I was under the impression he featured some power, but he only tatered up 1 time and that was while facing a position player. They’ll probably make an offer to Dickerson and if that doesn’t pan out shop for something from the same aisle.

I’m very excited about a future OF that could be Walker-Winn-Gorman. But we have to get there.

Let’s all hope that the Cardinal braintrust doesn’t get too awfully ambitious concerning the OF. The last time they did, they got saddled with the illustrious Dexter Fowler.

Do Burleson and Walker need another year at AAA? Not only to develop but to prove their 2022 numbers weren’t a fluke?

Both will probably start at Memphis, although I think there’s a runway for either to make the big league club out of Spring Training. I don’t think Walker has done anything fluky in his career yet…he’s been good at every stop.

The Cards definitely need a third power bat … preferably a left-handed hitter. I would vote for signing or trading for a veteran outfielder who has a track record of consistent production (similar to the Berkman and Beltran signings). I do not believe it would be prudent to go into next season assuming that two of the outfielders referenced in Bccrans post will all become contributors. O’Neil may be able to bounce back and Carslon may break out and become the offensive player many think he is capable of becoming. You may only get one of those two to emerge next season. Hence you need a player that has demonstrated a consistent level of contribution.

Agree, 1964. The main thing is that slot in the lineup right behind Goldy and Arenado. It needs to be a threat to be protective.

I think the “Slot” might be best if it was between Goldschmidt and Arenado. Example:

    Goldschmidt
    Soto
    Arenado

Has to be a realistic opportunity, Rats.

    bcr…this is what I envision.
    LF-Gorman
    CF-Winn
    RF-Walker
    DH-Burleson/Yepez
    2B-Donavan
    SS Edman
    3B-Arenado
    1B-Goldschmidt
Need to sign a catcher to go with Knizner

I thought Winn is the shortstop of the future? Why do some posters want him playing in the outfield?

I do not think that and never have. He is fast and has a big arm=CF.
