    Paid - Annual

    bling said:

In the ‘Memo to Mo’ department, I notice they have Woodford just ahead of both Flaherty and McGreevy.

My version of the memo would conclude, “Here is why you should not use that site for anything important.”

    Ouch.

The site is correct. Jack is too unreliable and Greevy has zero mlb time. Woodford still young with another year before arbitration and he is coming off a very solid year. BW, disappointing.

I posted this on the sticky thread too. The MLB Network last night indicated that St. Louis might be in on Trea Turner. Showed him as our leadoff hitter playing SS with Edman in the #2 slot and playing RF.

The MLB Network hasn’t been a part of our cable package for about four years now, so I don’t get it anymore. Did they ever start watching any of the games during baseball season?

From what I have read most “insiders” seem to be linking Trea Turner to the Phillies or Braves. I can’t imagine the Cardinals would sign anyone to a $300M contract, which is what he will get if not more.

Turner will most likely go to the Phillies

Regarding a site suggesting the values of Flaherty, Woodford and McGreevy are comparable…

I would bet that 90%+ of MLB GMs would trade their Jake Woodford to you for your Jack Flaherty. Other than a few here, I bet most fans would agree too. That isn’t a negative about Jake, but a reflection of Flaherty’s perceived value.

Regarding McGreevy, he is unproven at the MLB level so it becomes a comparison of a known quantity vs. the potential upside of a Double-A prospect. One is ready now, the other is a year or two away. Which is more valuable at this moment depends on where your team is now and its needs.

I haven’t been to that particular site and investigated how they assess player value, but this example seemed way off to me. Others can disagree.

I’ll take four future seasons of Woodford over one FA-to-be season of Flaherty.

Fair point. Could depend on whether the acquiring team is going for it in 2023 and thinks the old Jack is back. It could also matter if they want to sign him and are willing to make a serious offer to try to keep him from free agency. If he was traded before the season, didn’t sign and was made a qualifying offer in the fall, he would fetch a compensatory pick.

Surplus trade value is not the same as field value.

BTV has Jacks 2023 field value at 9.6mil, and if he were a FA right now, he may get that on the open market. I think it’s a little high, but he does have name value from four seasons ago, which is how most fans think of him. BTV estimates Jacks salary at 5.1mil, leaving a surplus trade value of 4.5mil

BTV has Woodfords field value at 10.1mil for the next FOUR SEASONS, roughly 2.5mil per, so the site IS NOT saying Woodford is more valuable than Jack, in fact just the opposite. They are correctly counting Woodfords club control seasons, 4 vs 1 for Jack.
10.1mil field value, minus Woodford estimated 4.7mil in salaries, leaves a surplus trade value of 5.4mi

BTV isn’t perfect, but it helps to understand what they are trying to show. At least they are freely available and the only site of it’s kind that I know of.

    gscottar,

Sorry, gotta disagree. Trea Turner will NOT get $300M. Any team that pays him that much should immediately fire the GM, President, Manager, Coaches, etc, etc.

I just don’t understand why the organization and many people on here continue to HOPE that all of a sudden Flaherty is gonna be what he was 4 years ago and that is our strategy for a number one pitcher! You know I keep waiting for Kate Upton to knock on my door and tell me she is leaving Verlander and wants to marry me! I think it is about as likely to happen as Flaherty all of a sudden being a top of the line number one again!

JJ. certainly agree with you. Jack is just too injury prone and I don’t remember Woody ever being injured.!

Jon Paul Morosi just said on MLB’s Hot Stove that he expects the Cardinals to trade one of 3 outfielders(ONeill,Nootbaar, or Carlson) probably to the Blue Jays for Danny Jensen.

I would trade O’Neill. I’m not sure he will live up to his potential. The strikeouts and injuries have soured me.

Last winter Corey Seager got 10 years/$325M. He is one year younger than Turner but I think Turner’s contract will be similar. I think Turner is better than Seager.

I would definitely be in favor of trading one of those guys for Jansen.

MLB Trade Rumors projects Turner to get 8 years/$268M, whish is $33.5M per year. I would say that is out of the Cardinals price range this winter.

Of the three, I would hope it is O’Neill if this trade happens!
