I’m remembering the interview where Bill DeWitt said Gorman needed to “run the gaunlet” before a call up.

Maybe that applies to all, or just Gorman, he didn’t say. Walker I haven’t seen play at all. No idea on his readiness.

I think the swing and miss is well documented with Nolan, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the team really felt that he needed the development time.

With Walker: .317/.388/.548 at A and A+ at 19, then .308/.388/.510 at Springfield this year at 20. The power hasn’t shown up huge yet, but that’s a pretty consistent line for someone so young. Something else to like…he scored 100 runs in 119 games this year and has 163 runs scored in 201 career games. He finds a way to home plate.

Is he ready though? I guess the development team will know but BW seems to think he’s being fast tracked and I trust that he’s too connected and too typically cautious to act that way without a very good reason to believe so.

If they sign a rental outfielder, I’d expect the Gorman timeline, but there are always injuries that need backfilling.

After Mo did such a stand up job with pitching this deadline, I’m willing to just watch his next pitching decisions. He gained some faith there, from me.

It’s how he deals with the position players that has me intrigued.

Does he just roll with Knizner / Herrera?

DH? Donovan, Yepez and Burleson? How does that play out?

Does he acquire an everyday bat?

Who might be traded? I’m looking forward to the offseason.

O’Neill is the key to how the Cardinals adjust their outfield for next year. If they trade him then I would align the outfield to look like this:
    Carlson
    Nootbar
    Burleson
    Walker
    Nolan Gorman

Eventually, the starting outfield would be:
    LF-Gorman
    CF-Carlson
    RF-Walker
Please don’t anyone say that Gorman can’t play LF because if he can adjust to 2B he can certainly LF. Walker is adjusting to the outfield and seems good at doing so.

Unless they’re pushing 40 years of age, almost any IF’er can be positioned in LF without an unacceptable risk. Heck, Berky played a decent RF for the Cardinals in ’11 with gimpy tie rod ends. The difficult switch is almost any OF’er adjusting to an IF position.

Good enough to win the central yes! That is it! We are 1 and 9 in our last 10 playoff games! This starting 5 will keep that number getting worse! We don’t have a 1 or 2 starter of a quality playoff team! Case closed!

Especially Nootbaar, CC. He came out of nowhere.

I agree CC. Noot and Donovan have brought stability to the batting first and second lineup spots that have been in flux with Carlson and Edman.

The Cardinals prefer to keep players at their most valuable position defensively. There is no indication that Gorman cannot handle second base credibly and a starting 2B is more valuable than a starting LF.

There is no motivation to try him in the outfield at this time. I don’t think they would move Gorman just for Donovan. Later, if Winn arrives and is MLB starting material, then there may still be an opening if Edman gets too expensive for the Cardinals tastes (see case of Kolten Wong).

I sure do like to see high OBP for the 1 and 2 spots.

.350 or higher if I can get it…

Agree, ZTR. And Donovan provides that.

I agree. Pedigree doesn’t feed the bulldog. Results do.

    GameCard –

I’m all in on an OF of Gorman-Carlson—Walker. And if there’s a hiccup with Carlson, maybe Antico or Winn will end up in CF.

bcc…yes that would be potentially good backups.

Winn will be playing SS, not CF. If you’re moving Gorman to the OF (which shouldn’t be happening), then Edman is free to go to 2B to accommodate Winn.

We don’t have a #1 or #2 starter because Flaherty has not performed like we hoped he would. He’s always hurt. In my mind 2023 is a very pivotal year for him. Same with O’Neill. If those two can’t keep from being injured and stay on the field, well, who knows. Maybe it’s time to move on from them.

I’m sorry, but if Edman is a proven Gold Glove SS who may even become an All Star, you don’t move him off his position just because of Winn. He was moved off SS to 2B at the major league level only because of DeJong.

Winn is a 99th percentile talent at SS. Edman is great, but you’d really rather see Winn put in CF and go with Donovan (who’s an unknown at best) at 2B? I’m sorry that you’re sorry, but Winn and Edman could become something that Edman and Donovan simply can’t.

Edman is a gold glove 2b but not at SS! The organization would be doing him a favor to move him back to 2nd! Winn is great defensively! Whether he can hit or not I don’t know! Should have been brought up in September and given at bats to try and see! That would have been better than giving Dejong the at bats IMO!

Rats buddy, great article! I haven’t thought about this way in awhile but before the start of the 2022 season I was telling people the Cardinals had the best young outfield in baseball ( Bader, Carlson and O’Neill) now one is gone and the other two were terrible! That is a major part of the problem! We have gone from best young outfield in baseball to can we find 3 competent players to play the outfield! Big difference!

Cards should have brought Winn up to the major league level at the end of the season? LOL. Okay.

Edman is a glove SS also…that is why his 2022 WAR is so high.
