Look at the playoffs and tell us how many “aces” there are – – whom are performing like “aces”. We have excellent pitching right now with Mikolas, Montgomery, Flaherty, and Matz.
Quintana did a great job and maybe they’ll re-sign him. Hope so.

Bccran, as to Walker and Winn we don’t know much until they put in a season at AAA. Knizner is a good back up catcher. Herrera, Gomez. Gorman and Burleson haven’t shown they can hold down an MLB job. The others are complimentary pieces.

The Braves have two lineup regulars who skipped AAA entirely. The Cards themselves have had success with the fast risers…look no further than our recently retired future Hall of Famer. I would like the Cardinals to be a little proactive for once, but I suspect Walker (Winn pretty assuredly needs Memphis, but he’d absolutely be an upgrade over Dejong already) takes his time in Memphis no matter what. Because reasons…

I think here’s a dream middle of the lineup the Cardinals are hoping for –

    Goldy
    Arenado
    O’Neill (CF)
    Walker (LF or RF)
    Gorman (2B and DH)

People seem to forget that Gorman is a kid who just turned 22 in May. In 2020, when he was 20, he lost a whole year of development. In 2021, as a 21 year old, he was pushed all the way up to AA and AAA. This season he split his time between Memphis and the Cardinals. So how did he do between the 2 levels? he played in 132 games and hit 30 home runs. At the major league level he hit 14 home runs in 313 plate appearances. Did the major league pitchers find ways to strike him out? You bet. But if he makes the proper adjustments successfully, he’ll probably be a 25-30 HR, 80-90 RBI impact bat for years to come.

bccran yes it doesn’t take long for MLB to figure out how to pitch to a rookie. Happens to most all of them. Seems like there’s always some guy coming up that’s gonna bust things wide open. Talk of sending Goldy or Nado packing are ridiculous. Cut off your nose to spite your face. Most of the stuff about past players now excelling is silly to me too. Those guys especially pitchers have to be developed. Given playing time. You might have brought em up but they were not completed yet. Knizner doesn’t really hit, DeJong should already be gone and the outfield should have hitters in it. Yepez seems destined for 1 half of DH. What about another bat? Waino is definitely on the way out which is gonna take another SP. Look how big bucks Scherzer got beat in the playoffs. So just buying stars isn’t a guarantee. Still need a real SS that hits for average. We’re pretty good for a young team not made of high dollar free agents but still have alot of holes.

Edman is the SS. He came in 13th in WAR in all of MLB. Tied with Mike Trout.

The Cardinals had 3 of the top 13 players in WAR in all of baseball on the team – Goldy, Arenado, and Edman. All play on the infield. What oh what are we going to do about that outfield. Are O’Neill, Carlson, and Nootbaar sufficient?

I’m not saying Gorman is a lost cause, just that right now he is a platoon player who can’t hold on to an MLB roster spot. Which is true. He’s young so he might work out. Or maybe not.

and yet Gorman was included in the post season roster and actually contributed. Both him and Yepez came in as pinch hitters and did the job

The outfield is again the question mark.

    O’Neill (health and productivity?)
    Carlson (can he develop?)
Nootbaar (is he good enough to hold down a corner full time?)
    Deluzio (defensive replacement only)
Yepez (how much of a defensive liability?)
    Burleson (same issue as Yepez?)
Walker (how soon can he be ready?)
    Gomez (too raw?)
    FA or Trade?

People throwing WAR around like it’s mean something. I don’t remember all that WAR doing anything in the playoffs, not a lot down the stretch either

Edman was a good player for the Redbirds this year and he’s one of my favorites, but if the formula for the WAR thing deduced that he was Mike Trout’s equal, my impression of the entire concept of any sort of WAR rating loses a lot of credibility.

    WAR?
    BAGIT?
    fWID?
    zRLT?
    pDSL?

Who cares about all those stupid analytical terms? As Herzog was quoted as saying a few years back, “Just give me batting average and then the eye test. That’s all I need to know”…..

Yep, it’s a pretty simple game. At the end of the day there’s really only one mathematical formula that counts for anything. And that’s the one that they use to calculate runs at the end of a ballgame.

So it is skewed upward by a season of fattening up on Central Division weaklings.

The answer to that is every Front office in MLB.

1TD, I would agree if they had played the same number of games. However, since WAR is cumulative, the more games a player plays, the more his WAR can be. A kind of generic way of looking at it would be to give an average over a similar number of games.

This could give a rough idea:
(Total WAR) divided by (Games Played) times (100)
Edman 3.96 WAR per 100 games (only 2.81 oWAR per 100 games)
Trout 5.29 WAR per 100 games (5.29 oWAR per 100 game)

However, I am not completely sold on WAR being the best valuation since any defensive metrics/WAR are the hardest areas to pinpoint value.

The point bccran is making is that Edman will be the starting shortstop.

He is above-average with the bat, improving his OBP and SLG this past year. Also, he is elite with the glove, even at SS.

Edman ranked 7th in Fangraphs DEF value in baseball among SS, despite having just 622 innings at the position. He had the 2nd highest UZR/150 and the 11th best DRS.

    Edman (622 innings, 8.1 UZR/150, 7 DRS)

Among NL gold glove competitors at SS:
    Swanson (1433 innings, 1.7 UZR/150, 9 DRS)
    Adames (1199 innings, 5.4 UZR/150, 9 DRS)
    Kim (1092 innings, 5.1 UZR/150, 10 DRS)
    Rojas (1113 innings, 6.3 UZR/150, 15 DRS)

To improve the offense, we should look to catcher and outfield.

Bccran here are some aces that are pitching well
    McClanahan
    Glasnow
    Beiber
    McKenzie
    Gausman
    Castillo
    Wheeler
    Nola
    DeGrom
    Dervish
    Cole
    Urias
    Wright

That is quite a few and by the way any of these is better than anyone we have! We can not and will not go far into a playoff run without a solid 1 or 2 of which we have neither at this moment!

The Cardinal starters are plenty good enough to win the Central again in 2023, and take us deep into October. It’s the up and down sporadic offense that needs to be addressed. And that entails a detailed look at both catcher and the outfield.

I liked the way Oli timeshared CF between Carlson and O’Neill. There is room for another rental in the outfield while Walker runs the gauntlet at AAA, as Gorman did. The competition for starts may be a positive for Dylan and Tyler.

Not sure the Burleson fans would want another rental, but he’s only an injury away from active.

jj…I’m curious what your feelings are on Walker’s potential for an early call to the majors next year are? We’ve seen teams like Atlanta pull the trigger and get rewarded, and Walker seems like the type who has taken really well to every assignment (as opposed to Gorman, who has struggled at the start of every level above rookie ball). Part of me wonders if the Cards aren’t planning on him being one of the OF starters as soon as opening day 2023.
